  • Rachel Nichols catches up with former New York Knicks and Georgetown Hoyas star Patrick Ewing to talk about Michael Jordan's impact on his career, MJ's trash talk, his time on the 1992 Dream Team with Larry Bird, MJ's retirement from basketball to go play baseball, Scottie Pippen refusing to be on the floor for the Chicago Bulls in that key game in 1994, that time when Jeff Van Gundy grabbed Alonzo Mourning's leg, Charles Oakley's recent comments about Ewing, and returning to Georgetown as head men's basketball coach.

    • @elijahruderman
      @elijahruderman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@BratatoChip He ain't top 40 all time. Definitely top 50 ever. He was never a top 5 player in the NBA. He was a good, but not great offensive player because of his lack of efficiency. His career playoff field goal percentage is 47%, which is terrible for a center, and it's worse than Jordan's career playoff FG% of 49%. It is also slightly worse than Chris Paul and Reggie Miller, who are guards. However, he is one of the best defensive players ever, and easily could've won a few DPOY's. He led the league in defensive win shares in '93, '94, and '97, and from '87 to '97, he averaged 6.3 defensive win shares per year, which is better than any NBA player has had in a season since Dwight Howard in 2011. He only made the all defense team 3 times, because only two centers can be chosen, which is unfair because Ewing was a top 5 defender every year from ' 89 to '97. Also, he (only) had 10 all star level seasons, from '87 - '97, which is a lot, but not that much when you compare it to other all time greats. Also, he was terrible in the '94 finals, and Hakeem was 3 times as good as him in those finals. He was never an MVP candidate, unlike a lot of guys you would put below on an all time list. His peak was basically what Joel Embiid is now, except if he was healthy, and a little bit more efficient, because Joel Embiid shoots around 40% when he's guarded by Marc Gasol level defenders.

      he does have great touch with his jumper and turn around fade away jumpshot, but another big man with just a a little bit better jumpshot, hakeem the dream, i love the 94-95 season when hakeem vs ewing , that was a battle of the big men. can't see them now a day, now every big man want to shoot 3 and want no part of playing in the post.

    My Favorite All time player, so great, humble, yet one of the biggest stars, and one of the very few greats, that literally had to carry a team for +15 years, get to the finals twice and unfortunately lose, he never had a certified star alongside him, only some stars in bursts, and a little too late, yet he was always fighting.
    Maybe some do not know, but he was head of NBPA in the 90s and he fought for the players, he is the main reason why NBA players get paid this high today, most players who signed at the end of the 80's had shitty, Long-term contracts, and Patrick is the reason why, when they re-signed those contracts, they started making 10s of Millions a year instead of 10's of millions per 7/8 years, and I think he was the highest paid player for a couple of years till MJ came back.

    I was a knicks fan in the 1990s. Patrick Ewing had very lottle talent around him. He didn't get get real good talent around him until 1999 when he really could not play anymore. He had Mark Jackson for a few years, but Pat Riley inexpelicably traded him. It was a terrible trade. It killed the knicks offense for the decade. Patrick is not Michael, but he did great work with lousy talent around him. John Starks did his best, but he is not really good enough to be a #2 on championship team. They should have show Stark's dunk on the entire Bull baseline (including MJ) for the 93 series and interviewed John. I'm guessing MJ would have edited that part out. But yeah .. .hard but compared to today's Knicks those hard losses in the 90's look magically.

But the mismanagement of upstairs management has been so sick to watch I just wonder if it a trickle down effect on all sports teams thru the last 20 yrs in the NY area that's despite the Giants winning the Superbowl s with that Tom Coughlin team cause they never ever after that have shown consistency to hold serve and win. Remember as great as Michael Jordan was he didn't win a championship until scottie pippin came . Scottie is the only player in all six of the bulls championships with jordan. Patrick is on my short list of my all time greatest basketball players of all time. He always gave 1000 percent sweat and blood he gave his all. Well, they didn't have home court. The Knicks were up 3 games to 2, but the series went back to Houston and the Rockets won two hard fought games in Houston. Houston had a better regular season record by 1 game. Pat Riley was the head coach 4 seasons there - 91-92, 92-93, 93-94, and 94-95.
