  • Travelers on a flight to Fort Lauderdale received quite a scare when they were told to put on their life vests after a suspected mechanical issue forced their plane to return to Jamaica.
The incident happened Sunday on Spirit Airlines flight 270 from Montego Bay to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
A Spirit spokesperson said the plane suffered a suspected mechanical issue and returned to Montego Bay out of an abundance of caution.

Emergencies happen. Evacuations happen. We are trying to help you so that you survive. Don't be dismissive. Listen. Watch. Let us do our jobs. If flight attendants were on board the aircraft for service reasons, airlines would have replaced us with vending machines decades ago. We are there for your safety.

speaking as a very frequent non-rev passenger and a cargo pilot, I thank you for doing your job the way you are trained and keeping the passengers safe. Passengers do need to pay attention regardless if its important or not. Today marks the 25th anniversary of American flight 1420 into little Rock AR Jun 1st 1999. 9 passengers died and over 80 where injured. I was on that flight in my early 20s at the time and i walked out of there with just bruises and cuts after the plane ran off the runway and crashed. It was one experience i hope to never see ever again, and a friendly reminder to heed safety announcements at the beginning of the flight.

They’re too busy screaming, praying, and doing everything in fear and might not be opening the equipment the proper way. Yeah, you're gonna be scared if something goes wrong. But you're gonna be so happy if you make it out alive, even if you're hurt. These people did not have a scratch on them. Landed safely. They might have been scared, but this does not rise to the level of 'traumatized'. If they had crashed and lived, that's traumatized. But nothing happened! Nothing! Nobody is a victim here. People need to choose whether they are going to live their entire lives feeling like a traumatized victim of somebody or something or are they going to accept that everything they do comes with risks, having a scary encounter is normal and they really will get over it, and being afraid of dying is not the same thing as actually almost dying.

But here's people taking video for no other reason but to take it. They're not jumping for joy in the video, but they're not screaming nor looking like they're about to hit the water. They are simply waiting. So, pretty sure that's loads of proof that fearing for your life in reality is quite different than feeling safe enough to hold on to a phone rather than bracing for impact or praying or anything that one would do if they truly did feel like they were about to die. They'll be no payouts. They already got a free flight. And they're alive too! What a bonus!
