What I use to protect my camera? An OM-1
I put it under a faucet just to test it before my trip to Iceland. There I went through a waterfall with the camera in hand with no issues. After it got sprayed with saltwater at the beach, I cleaned it with the shower head as soon as I got home. I have absolutely no worries with that camera, I'm pretty sure I would never in a million years stay out (for my own sake) in the conditions that would damage it.

Salt water mist near the ocean with waves crashing on the rocks can also coat your entire camera including the front element even with a large hood in place. That is the one place were a UV lens is actually helpful.

Thanks guys - another entertaining and informative show. So far my L series lenses have held up amazingly well in challenging conditions - in Western Australia it's sand, dust and heat far more often than rain - it almost seems a bit ridiculous that I'll take the expensive gear out in bad conditions where I wouldn't have risked cheaper gear. Really good to see Glenn getting away with minimal gear in Antarctica. I've got a trip planned to Africa (hooray!) later this year and will only have space for the r5 and 100-500mm lens (but I will take my TC) - it should stand up to both the punishment and the range of conditions.

I made a rain cover for my R5 and lens from the leg of a pair of Gortex pants that I tore with a crampon while ice climbing in Antarctica in 2007! I have a rubber band on the cover in my bag and then place it around the cover on the lens hood to hold it in place when I want to use it. The lower leg of the pants has a zipper and velcro cover stitched into it, so that works perfectly to go around the foot on the lens which enables me to use the lens on a monopod or tripod as well.

I was in the rainiest place on earth, Kauai up in the mountains and I brought along a really nice rain cover and it saved the day. It’s important to remember that with the rain comes wonderful greens and colors popping that can make shooting amazing. Especially if you were traveling and could only bring a 300mm II and the 2x III without a flash and tripod. The lens combo worked great for my trip. For forest birds I think the larger apertures are better wheras the 7.1 aperture of the 100-500l is a good combo for more open spaces or can get cleaner shots. Just my opinion! ❤

Wow Glenn, those penguin shots are absolutely awesome! Major Mitchell Cockatoo image is a beautiful shot, my 2 cents worth, possibly adding some breathing space on the left hand side may have taken away that initial comp error we have ingrained in us now, and the Black Swan I agree with both your comments re the lighter area top left hand side - when you showed it with that darkened, the image become spot on, stunning shot darkened. Wonderful photos everyone who were featured with terrific suggestions from Jan & Glenn. Another great video gents, thank you!

OK - the black swan. I like your comments about the brighter upper left. However, think about this: the left side of this bird is also a bit brighter. Both that, and the brighter upper left background provide a perception of the direction of lighting, which gives a more natural feel to this view of an amazing bird. HOWEVER - I also like the goal of aiming for a more abstract interpretation of the image, which means - adjust to emphasize symmetry, and making the patterns of colour establish an abstract art result. Both work well - but the viewer's impression is different. Great comments. Always thought-provoking. Thanks!

    Morning Folks
I have a simple sleeve cover from Wildlife watching supplies UK. Have used over 10 years in all conditions from snow in Yellowstone to sand on the beach and this simple barrier works well. The other consideration is transferring equipment from cold to warm environments. Condensation definately is not recommended with modern cameras

As for me, I don't shoot in inclement weather so no worries for my gear. It is a bit dusty at the wildlife refuge so I do clean off my camera and lens when I get home. My RF 100-500mm has already been sent in to Canon for an internal cleaning. Weather sealing just doesn't keep out the dust.

About making your camera water proof I would also add that we need to consider how we hold the camera there is a lot of test how awesome is 7d and 7dm2 but when I mounted my 7d on peak design capture to the backpack arm the rain was hitting it not from the top but on the back and camera was not happy about it, it died on me for 2 days and I needed to use 1200d backup body after 7d was sitting without lens and body cap to make the moisture evaporate its still going strong but its nice to know that cameras are weather sealed the best when we hold the normally and not tilting them to much on the sides..

Constantly amazes me how few togs I meet in the wild use a raincoat, partickly on big lenses.
My primary photographic passion is surfing & my secondary is birds on estuary & river, so I normally have the 150-600 on the x-t5; so wind-blown sand, salt spray & driving rain are the norm. (In the uk).
My buddy now carries a rain cover, having actually tipped water out of his 5d iv body when the seal on his 100-400 failed at the beach.
    My philosophy... £2,000 lens; £1,700 body; £20 lens/camera raincoat - No-Brainer.

I've been shooting with two R5s for a few years and I live in Maine so they see their fair share of snow rain saltwater spray and I've had no issues related to that. However, while out in the Rocky mountains shooting elk in September on a windy day with dust blowing around my record button jammed down with a grain of sand in it and I could not get it out. Fortunately I had a second R5. Would have been really bummed to spend all that money to fly there. Lug all that gear there in the middle of a giant herd of elk with no camera. So that second body on important trips like that seems key to me.

To me the most important aspect is to know what your gear can handle.
My Z7II is weather sealed. So is my Tamron 70-200/2.8 G2.
But my Nikkor 200-500/5.6E? Not so much! 😁So that one goes back into the bag if the conditions get a bit wet.

Great entertainment again, from both of you!! But Glen, how dare you make us so jealous of your trips... ;-)
The last time I put my gear in danger was on a winter trip in northern Norway. We were on a RIB, a rubber boat, with about 500 hp and the captain showed us how fast he could take us out to groups of fish hunting orcas. So the most endangered species on this trip were the cameras and lenses, from the big waves that were washing over us. I remember on this occasion other people's Canon 6D IIs and Sony Alphas gave up the ghost. As long as the boat was running, I covered my R5/EF 70-200 2.8 II with the rain cover of my backpack and it coped with no problems. But back at the apartment I wiped off the salt with a microfiber cloth moistened with fresh water thoroughly from lens and body and contacts.

As for using your gear in adverse weather, I think it boils down to if you can afford to replace it if it gets damaged.

I've had my hands on the 200-800 for a few hours recently, it's definitely an amazing lens. It might possibly not reach quite the quality of the 100-500 when pixel-peeping, but it is extremely close. (On the camera display even when zoomed in, you cant tell any difference). On bodies with "low" MPs like my R6m2, i bet the difference won't be visible at all. I'm definitely excited for owning the lens next year.

    • @CarlosHernandez-kg8py
      @CarlosHernandez-kg8py 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

After a year of owning the R6 II, I discovered the Digital Tele Conv. (2X and 4X) Jpeg only built in the camera. I use it with the RF 100-500. Got decent pictures so far at 2X, giving me a 1000mm, and the beauty is that you don't loose a stop. Second: The dynamic range remains at 6K X 4K, in case you want to crop more. I haven't pixel-peep those pictures yet, waiting for the pros to write a report or make a video. The 4X T C is too much.

    • @andreas_rr
      @andreas_rr 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

minor edit: i assumed the digital TC to be x1.4 and x2 like the physical ones, i didn't think of them being x2 and x4 instead. just keep that in mind reading, because else the numbers might be a bit off. it doesn't change anything anyways, really.
@@CarlosHernandez-kg8py yes and no. the digital TC simply crops the picture, there is no magic involved. the only reason to use it would be if either that spares you from cropping afterwards, or you intend to crop even further and just wanna reduce data volumes by not saving the "rim" of the picture.
you're not loosing a stop, but you still kind of are. By cropping (in general, not just with the TC), the amount of Photons collected by the camera pixels in order to display one single display is reduced, thus noise increases. basically, if you look at a 3840x2160 picture on a FHD screen, each screen-pixel contains the photons collected by 4 pixels. if you now crop this picture to 1920x1080, you have exactly one sensor pixel per screen pixel, so you have 1/4th of the light ("signal") for the same noise, thus worsening your signal-to-noise ratio, just as if you had an uncropped picture made with a physical x2 TC.
The TCs basically redistributes the light gathered by one pixel onto either 2 (or 4) pixels, thus cropping less by a factor of 2 (or 4) just "undoes" the redistribution of the TC.
In the end, just think of it like: the TC "increases" secretly the ISO by either x2 or x4 without brightening the picture, so you're still kinda loosing light. The difference between lets say F/4 and F/8 is both the amount of light gathered by the lens and the depth of field (or bokeh) created. a cropped 100mm F/4 only has ¼th the light gathered compared to a 200mm F/4 (the aperture diameter is 100/4=25mm vs 200/4=50mm), and it doesn't have the same dof/bokeh either. If you want similar noise and dof/bokeh on a cropped 100mm compared to a uncropped 200mm F/4, you will need a 100mm F/2 lens.
Having said all that, keep also in mind, a 1000mm lens on a R6m2 gives you 24MP, while a x2 cropped 500mm picture gives you 6MP, so asides from noise and bokeh, you're also reducing the amount of further cropping you can do afterwards. So you're not gaining anything really, well, asides from what i said at the beginning, if you save cropped pictures you can reduce your data volumes by getting rid of the outer image as early as possible.

Weight is an issue for me. Shooting with the R5 100-500. Do we think the R5 ii will have better built in crop? The current 1.6 crop drops you to 12 MP. I keep thinking I can extend the reach through the camera instead of the lens. So, interested in the R5 ii or R7 ii. Thoughts on getting reach in the camera vs the lens? Thanks

I shoot a Sony a1, with several GM and G lenses (upper end and not), and i've done so in light rain for an hour or so, and moderate rain for shorter periods of time, with no rain cover, and no problems. that said, i used to shoot Canon, and i believe that Canon and Nikon have more experience in high end weather protected camera gear. I've got a trip to the Falklands (Malvinas) coming up in about 2 weeks (Yikes!) and my plan is to use shower caps. I found some completely clear thin plastic shower caps at the local CVS drug store that i should be able to see through and operate without much visual or tactile impact, and they cost $2.69 for a bag of 15 of them. The elastic edge is larger than any of my lenses bases, but i think a rubber band fixes that, so i can completely cover the body end. Note, I do have Lenscoat raincoats, but they're a lot heavier, bulkier, harder to work with and with holes for your hands, sand will more easily get to the gear. sometimes the simplest solution is best. then again, this is all untested. we will see how this works out.
I think i can use a 2nd (or 3rd) shower cap(s) to with a hole punched at the opposite end to cover the barrel of the lens, with rubber bands, so that should work with any lens.
another concern is fast blowing sand impacting the front element, sandblasting it. not good at all. so my plan there is to use another shower cap for that. it fits. and if necessary, i can secure it with either another rubber band (or 2), or a velcro strap. it even fits the 600mm f/4 lens hood. and unlike any lens caps for the big lens, a shower cap fits in any pocket unobtrusively.
finally, an optical element you did NOT discuss, was the primary optical reconnaissance system guiding all our work (our eyeballs). I normally wear glasses, so I'm somewhat protected, but I was out shooting sand dunes last winter in windy conditions, and got a particle in my eye, which did not stop my from shooting, but it sure did ruin the rest of my day. it was quite painful, and not much i could do out in the middle of nowhere to fix it. I have to work on that next. i am open to suggestions, anyone?

I chill at home and play around with macro instead when weather is bad. But sometimes I do go out when its cold. I am extra careful to not get condensation. Important when I get home that I leave the camera in the bag for atleast a few hours. That way I guarantee that it stays dry. I also never put lenses with the front on the ground when changing. This prevents dust to collect on the exposed glass.

I hike the Pacific shoreline several days per week and out in all weather. I have Canon R5 + 100-500 L (+ other lens ) and have been pretty wet, windy, salty many times. I have shower caps (easy to travel with) but I'm not good at protecting in the field. I wipe off ASAP at home or in the car. Sometimes out in weather, I'll put a cloth over the top of the camera and lens. To me... it's not worth having good gear if it sits on the shelf. My trip of a lifetime is scheduled for this February in Antartica so I was really excited to hear about your adventure! I can't wait to hear more... I have questions on how to carry gear on Zodiacs (and take photos on Zodiacs) and how to carry on land.

I wish I could protect better my Sigma 60-600mm. External zooms are always in danger. I even nearly broke my Olympus E-M1 II when I used 12-100mm PRO in heavy rain.

Hey Glenn & Jan, awesome guys 🥰 What a stunning episode !!! What a marvelous trip to Antarctica (&Patagonia)! Guess we all wished we'd be there, but the cost was probably prohibitive .. which in a way is a good thing because when all 70k plus followers would go there next season, it wouldn't be good to preserve the nature! And then I assuming your followers are well behaved ..
Also I'm happy for Glenn he persevered Covid, and he managed to avoid a fogged out 100-500 which plagued me for 2 days in Bali 💪
Even when I missed new shots from Jan, this was the most amazing Bird Photography Show since this series started 😍👍
And like John Drummond commented: I have some "15 Euro original Nikon gear" .. which is a plastic clip protecting the hotshoe of the R5 ;-)

I take my Sony A1 with 200-600mm kayaking at Everglades National Park almost every week. Out in the Florida Bay, I've almost been capsized by manatees twice, and it inundated my cockpit drowning my gear. I dried it off and kept going. In the end, the gear is only a tool for me to get the photos I want, albeit an expensive tool. I have a dry bag, but it is cumbersome and i will lose a lot more shots fumbling with it to get the camera out. Same with the rain bags, too cumbersome with the paddling, etc. When the wildlife doesn't come to you, you have to go to the wildlife. Only way to see native American flamingos and roseate spoonbills in their natural habitat is to paddle out into the bush. Only thing I would say is the salt water corrodes everything. I am sure eventually my camera will die eventually. I cover the flash shoe with electrical tape, but there are signs of corrosion on the edge.

So pleased that this new 200/800 will have some sort of weather resistance am sick of Canon non L lenses having none at all. I have a neoprene weather cover when using normal size lenses and a Canon cover for telephoto lenses and roll up a 10L drysack to throw camera in if a downpour. Overkill maybe but l won't get caught out.

@@jan_wegener i hope so too. In my eyes, the 24-240 and 100-400 were a first pair of lenses between the L-series and the "STM lenses" since both have USM at a pretty affordable price, then the two F/11's were a proof of concept that highly specialised but affordable lenses are very interesting to a lot of users, and the 200-800mm would then be a 3rd generation of higher-end but still rather affordable lenses. The price is quite close to the 100-500, but considering the increased range and having handled the lens myself for a few hours, it is definitely a bridge between the "L" and "non-L" lenses. It has some weather sealing, it has a white paint treatment (technically still inferior to the L's but still better than nothing at all), it has a nano-USM motor and the image quality is also really amazing.
There is no doubt the lens will sell extremely well, and i'm sure Canon should follow this up with a few other middle-class lenses. Not having 3rd party lenses allowed sucks, but to be honest, if Canon continues like this, there won't really be too much of a need for any. At least in my case as the 200-800 will round up neatly my lens lineup and the only thing i'd even consider "needing" as a complement to it would be an extender.

Thanks for a great show. I decided to get an EF 100-400 II + 1.4x for my R7. I cannot help thinking that this combo is better than the RF 100-500. It may be bigger and heavier, and has the converter, but I can use the 1.4x through the whole 100-400 range, giving me a far end of 560 instead of 500. What are your thoughts?

Makes sense to me, this is what I’m looking to do. If you get a speed booster too you can use it nearer its original focal length with an added extra stop of light (I treated myself to the Canon 0.71x but others are around).

    • @jan_wegener

Hi Jan, interesting topics. I would like to ask a question about the new Canon RF 200-800 superzoom. On the Canon Europa website, they say the following: The RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM is designed to withstand changeable weather, with dust and moisture resistance equivalent to Canon's pro L-series lenses. What do you think? A thousand thanks
