- Before the StarCraft filled summer begins, I wanted to take a look at Last Train Home, a game I really enjoyed playing earlier this year.
I like trains.

So when is "Can you beat Last Train Home Without Scouts?"
Using only scout-cooks*
Nah nah nah: have it be a 'no build' mission 😁
Day 10 of asking ggg to play /speedrun the starcraft 2 beginner tutorial hidden in the Main Menu near settings
Grant
Trains
Wait this isn't The Great Train Robbery
It is, but YOU'RE the trains!
Is it Conviction then?
Grant requesting a firebat was not the ending I expected
Jayborino taught him well.
Grant was so into firebat that he forgot theyre like the last thing you want in reosource starved Siberian train.
I am proud to see that Giant grant games is a firebomb academy scholar…
Also, they went with Live-Action Cutscenes, real people and A FUCKING STEAM LOCOMOTIVE! Something that is very, very rare these days but since they got actors that look like the painted portraits - or the other way around - it gives them even more depth because it creates the feeling that those people at some point really existed and those live action cutscenes might have happened in real life, even tho all those characters are just invented for the adaptation of the real story.
I'm glad people still appreciate live action cutscenes. When you're a big moviehead, you tend to learn about the complex processes involved in filming even a simple short clip. To film using a real train is impressive, not to mention the costume detail which must have been incredibly time consuming. I wish there were more crossover between film and gaming beyond vague "the game is cinematic" type statements
I'm not very familiar with military uniforms but i do admire many I see in movies. I've also learned to spot poorly implemented or anachronistic elements in a uniform costume. The ones being used here look quite realistic although I'm not sure if the insignia and other decorations are accurate. Still very detailed
Oh trust me 😅As a Czech i can confirm we have lots of muzeums with stuff like these locomotives. 🙂And many of that stuff could be used again if given a chance, or so my dad says...
@@Tridetuschad tier lack of elaboration!!
@@ThommyofThenn Im not here to write in detail about charcoal stoves, baths, gas lamps and old tanks and planes.
At Grant - as someone who considers himself pretty good at this specific game - improving living quarters is the go to strategy. Early on there is no need to rush, unless you choose so/want to go for speed run/Steam achievement. It's better to be methodical, get bigger living quarters to get as many troops as you can, soldiers are your greatest asset. And having good living quarters gives you the options to use your best soldiers (Zámecká, Dráp for example) more without completely draining their energy. And it also solves the morale issue.
"So making sure your snipers can make some really good soup is a good build"
Related to the VA is how attentive devs were making sure there is balanced cast of both Czechs and Slovaks voice acting in this game. We are brothers and we stand together.

...you know it's dire times when "hope" is getting to _Siberia_
This brings up a question I've had since the beginning of the video: Why would anyone _want_ to go to Satan's Icebox? Maybe this is something I'm just too far south to understand (Sunny California, baby!) but I simply can't comprehend why people willingly live in, well, Russia in general. Of course, I also ask why anyone would willingly live in the Middle East or, say, Palm Springs without amazing climate control.
@@bluesbest1 I'm sure there are plenty of people that are confused why anyone would want to live in cali. As for the story here, As noted in the video, the game is based on real events just over a hundred years ago. The Czechoslovak Legion was charged with protecting the Trans-Siberian railway, a major asset for moving goods and people across the whole of Russia. Getting to Siberia was hope, because it was where the rest of their forces were, where steady supplies of food were, and where a path of escape back home was.
@@bluesbest1 I mean I think in context it was hope also because it's the furthest away from "front lines" they could
related also I was born and raised just a bit south of the equator line so my blood can't tolerate temperature below say 16 degC. living anywhere with cold winter - or god forbid _snow_ would be absolutely impossible to me
@@rigen97It's all in how you dress mate. I could have you feeling warm and cozy in a snow storm
@@bluesbest1 They're not trying to get to Siberia for Siberia, they're trying to get to Vladivostok to get a ship home.
Factorio, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Last Train Home, Machinarium, Mafia, Arma, Space Engineers, DayZ... Czech games are really well done.
When someone boasts about his/her winrate always ask from how many encounters it was.
Czechoslovakia has 100% naval battle winrate against Russia. The catch is, that there was only one naval battle vs Russia.
Some legionaries (probably trying to get home) stole three ships and blew up a port. Destroing one ship and caputring another in the process.
Why is youtube telling me your comment is a day old on a 7 minute old video?
@@gabrielreinalter2269 he's likely a patreon member
Since then everyone was too afraid to face our mighty navy.
@@TheArklyte Or a time traveler, you never know
im pretty sure its also a 100% naval victory rate in total too
You'll be glad to know that Petsuchos are called Petsobek in AOM retold.
Was that little thing about the RTS controls actually working a dig at Homeworld 3? I feel like it was and honestly, I agree 100%.
Frankly it was a dig at a _lot_ of RTS controls.
Age of empires 4, age of empires 2 DE, war craft 3 refunded, dawn of war, star craft 1 and a million other games I can't think of without my morning coffee 😂
@@JJJBunney001 I love AoE 2 DE deeply. But sometimes units just do... weird shit.
Classic RTS has jank controls, but that's normal, you just gotta live with it. But basically every RTS from the past 10 years still controls like crap even though Starcraft 2 figured out how to do it right. We should be past this by now but we aren't, the bar is still so low that "pretty much mostly works well enough" is better than 99% in the genre.
@@JackFrosthawk I’d say it’s effectively on par with SC2. Never had issues with pathing.
It's not an hour long!
its not SC2!
What a coincidence, I picked this up recently while it was on sale and all of a sudden I see a GGG video about this game uploaded not even 5 minutes ago.
Hope you have fun. Played it 5 times to get all achievements + the DLC missions. That being said, I am Czech so I have positive bias towards the game.
"Coincidence"
Here in Russia many criticize this game because we again shown as bad guys. But I think it's actually correct, civil war was very dark moment in our country history and we must remember it well.
P.s it actually really fun to see on the map places where you've been. Can imagine it even more interesting if you're Czechoslovakian
Ive heard of this a few times but this is the first real analysis i've watched of it. The mix of styles is definitely a very interesting prospect. I like how you frame it as almost a "grown up" version of OT. It also seems like a game that isn't going to coddle you and rewards thoughtful gameplay and mastery over mechanics but also allows a degree of freeform play.
I didn't realise your npc companions had unique likes or dislikes. Nice touch really
Quick correction regarding the scene setting at 0:50, by this point in time the Red Revolutionaries were the closest thing to a government that Russia had. The Whites were a loose and disorganised alliance of factions who did not like the Reds taking power and who were trying to do something about that, but the Reds held most of the key central regions and cities of Russia for the entire duration of the Reds vs Whites war.
Also Russia had not been an empire for a year before the Czechoslovak legion revolted
A:
Bayonette charge is amazing if you're a stealth focused player. Which I am. If you combo a takedown of 2-3 dudes with a rifle charge then you can take out a group of 6 dudes before any of them can open fire. It is, however, a bit clunky, and you'll want to make sure that each targetting circle only has one dude in it.
B: Expand your living quarters, expand your storage, and go all in on anything that saves you resources. Insulation, more efficient engine, cheaper repairs. If you're stealth focused you'll never have to worry about bullets much anyway.
Hearing my native language in Grant's video warms my heart. Gotta try this beautiful game.
As a ukrainian i was pleasently surprised at how close is the chech language to ukrainian!
I teared up a bit.
Me too.🥲
I played through this game a few months ago and really enjoyed it! I'm glad to see a bit of a spotlight out on it :)
You know, if I got a groshen every time I fell in love with Czech game related to Czech history, I'd have two groshen. God be with you, Grant!
The armored train was always a bad idea, but it is one of the coolest military vehicles ever.
The way he says "soup" makes me think of the elder swear video
Mate thank you so much 😊 I have been looking at this game and now I really want to play it! Buying it today 😆 you're awesome
I would love to see a full playthrough of this in the archives! (Or watch the uncut vods a la archipelago)
last week the train was in my home town, just randomly came across it in the station =) (a recreation)
Awesome vid Grant. Love your work man.
I was hoping you'd cover this, I don't know why but I'm glad you did
I played this game when it first came out on Steam and I really enjoyed it. Glad to see you making a video and genuinely enjoying the game. Maximilian Drap in my game was the hero. Maxed out Scout was doing work.
Him and Zámecká are the most likely MVP candidates by definition of their traits.
Been playing Starcraft ever since I was a kid and been through lots of struggles playing Frostpunk 3 years ago, it is interesting for me to see a game that adapt both play style into a unique mechanism. Looking forward to try it out any time soon, thanks Grant.
*Hope rises. Discontent falls.*
Always fun to watch, thanks for the review.
This has been on my wishlist for a while. Missed the last sale but will definitely get it the next time I have a chance, thanks for giving me the push.
Genuinely brought this game after your "10 RTS to look forward to" / w/e you made a few months back; fantastic game and so glad you recommended it back then.
I remember researching this particular episode of the Russian Revolution for a school essay and thinking it was the most metal thing ever, im glad the game does it justice
When this game was released, the Czechoslovakian legionaries trains made a trip across the Czech Republic, don't know if it was thanks to sponsorship or deliberately waiting for the event, either way, I've toured one of the trains, you could basically say they were a mini-towns in their own right, they even had a goddamn post office.
Legiovlak tours around CZ regulairly for several years now, staying few weeks in every bigger city. It is a museum on rails, after all.
Sounds like a wonderful well crafted game that i got anxious about just hearing Grant talk about it.
For anyone interested in finding out more about this game, the youtuber RimmyDownUnder streamed his playthrough and uploaded the highlights as a video on his channel. I highly recommend watching it if you dont plan on picking it up, as the gameplay and story is phenomenal.
I really didn't expect it, but I will definitely try this game, sounds great
This game feels like xcom combat, mixed with valkyria chronicles individual characters. A blend of making the ace go-to squad, with the fear of losing a core member… Definitely gotta to pick this up when i get a chance
I've been looking forward to this video. One sec while I'm getting my blanket.
This is officially going on my wishlist.
This is basically super tough xcom
Yes you will get thoughts of shooting your screen in anger after game ending for the fifth time
But in the end you will be coming back for more because this game really hooks you and then pulls it so hard you lose something important
It always feels good to listen about a good gamę.
...tool me a whole day to realize this was a main channel video
This seems pretty cool! I'll definetily play it!
Thank you for review. I'm gonna go and get it.
This game has been on my steam wishlist for weeks, might have to move it up the priority list
The game really looks like a work of love
Oh heck yeah this is awesome!
Happy to hear you enjoyed the game.
Dude this is sweet, not dissimilar to my great(great?) grandfather's experience, except he was coming from Central Asia and nobody blew up their train lmao
Also Pavel is my namesake and his surname kinda fits too lmao
Really enjoyed the video Grant, glad to see you spotlighting a historical-fiction videogame. Although i cam empathise with your complaints about the squad system, they clearly expect you to form squads that will last for several missions, but for practical purposes forming rigid squads just kneecaps the rest of the systems you can have those soldiers engage with.
Still, I'm looking forward to playing the DLC missions at some point and i can't wait to see more from the dev team! They've clearly got some good passion and the creative chops to make some really cool stuff.
Damn I'd love to watch Grant play through this game
I'm sold, cool stuff
A comment for the algo, because I didn't know this came out and more people should see it.
seeing this brought back fond memories of playing FTL but also this looks like a totally different game
Thanks! I'll check it out 😊
I would love to see a a series from you in this game
Man Grant I always love these types of videos you pop out now and then. The amount of details and information you give and in this case with how much it sounded like you enjoyed it makes me want to get the game lol. I'll note that I won't actually get the game as my enjoyment would be limited, Xcom being the closest thing I can compare it to that I've played I enjoy/hate the game. There were times where it was a blast and like you pointed out you eventually find a character you get attached to due to something that happened, but then times where things just constantly backfired or RNG just constantly bad that they'd just grind me down and set me off. So as curious as I am about the game I'll be avoiding it just so I don't put myself through hell like I did with Xcom lol
Yeah no cap this a banger video
now we wait, for a challenge video of this
A wonderful game, played it on release and enjoyed the hell out of it.
And yes, scouts are absolutely busted. As soon as I got myself 3 scouts with camouflage and single shot kill ability, I was playing them like 80% of the time.
1:50 Empires of the Undergrowth simulates ANTS so they were designed to not follow orders directly.
EotU is not a strategy game imo. It's a puzzle game with a strategy skin. And the focus on micro and value kinda conflicts with how unruly the ants are.
I got this January and beat the tutorial but then got buried in other games given to me over the holidays and sick so never got back to it. Will hopefully get there soon!
Aah yes I've been waiting for this video ever since I played through this game upon GGG's recommendation of it.
Also scouts are OP, my lategame team was 50% maxed lvl. snipers and it was busted. Snipe also works against tanks which I find a bit ridiculous.
3 minutes in and i am sold
The combat in this game reminds me of the Close Combat games. My favorite in that series was "A Bridge Too Far."
Ah, yes, the Czechoslovak legion that surrendered Kolchak to the Bolsheviks to get a free ride home.
From your description, I get Jagged Alliance vibes.
zerg eddition of this mod would be called last Strain home
Rest in Peace, Ivan o7
Lindybeige did great couple of videos about the Legion and their epic undertaking :)
Greetings from the "fertile Willamette River valley" haha 0:57
Soup is important. Duly noted
It solves the Food question if you play your cards well. But you have to sacrifice Hospital Car to get it early.
This game would probably stress me out more than I need right now, but it looks /excellent/. Hopefully I can get to a place where I'm less generally-stressed so I can play it and feel good about it. :)
So this game is what if metro exodus play like rts with xcom base that sets in a ww1 setting.
I find it hilarious that the most brutal surviving setting are around train or related to train
Metro series (underground train tunnel, a literal train in exodus)
Kabaneri of the iron fortress (anime, i know) also around train.
And this.
I am always looking forward to your new videos. And watching you recommend this game was really special, because I am from Czechia as well!
Love you Grant!
ps: Is there any chance you would review a game called Rise and Fall? It's an RTS that I played when I was young and I would to know your opinon. Thank you
Honestly think historical games have a lot of potential and this game confirms it. Having games in this style but during Napoleons era, or maybe during the western front during WW1/2
While this sounds like a harrowing survival experience, I'm not sure I want to actually play this game now since it feels like I would get depressed and into "too bleak, stopped caring"
love that you cover the game. Can i watch the video without many spoilers? sadly i wasnt able to play through the game untill now.
Loved the video!
Purely FYI and as someone from Eastern Europe I wanted to mention that the vowels in "Ivan" and "Pavel" are pronounced more similar to Spanish vowels than English ones. Think about the "a" and "e" in "abuela" for example, if you want to pronounce the names more closely to their original form.
Great review as always!
I assume it isn't your intention but I'm also pronouncing the v's like Spanish too. Eebaan and Paabel haha
Yaaaaaz!
This looks a lot like the Expedition series, but with a bigger budget.
Now I want grant to do a frostpunk review.
as a czech i am glad Grant loves our history
Siberia ain't frozen hellscape and has hot summers, right now quite a few Americans and westerners are moving there, Russia plans to move capital city there in 2040s
Clicked on video because Grant doesn't chase the algorithm but instead shares a game only because he believes we will like it. I was.....what's the opposite of disappointed? * _checks thesaurus_ * hmm...doesn't quite seem to be one. I choose....PLEASED AS PUNCH.
“Sorry IVAN”, felt that 😭
In my first run, I had no kitchen car so Ivan was saved, but he was effectively a passenger.
yep the clumsy one is the one with the explosivs perfect
In Mission gameplay it only decreases his grenade throwing range and accuracy. Also vision, but there is no reason for him to walk alone.
On the train and during scavenging he’s far greater liability - chance to get injured is random.
That being said … his Vengeful trait prevents you from getting hit by explosives on the track.
There are only two soldiers early with this trait. The other one - Kamil Hadraba has Survivalist trait so you should send him on Hunting/Fishing trips.

One small correction for russian history: the whites did not form the government. At this point, the government was composed of mostly socialists already, but not socialist enough for the reds. The whites were created mostly as a reaction to the reds and composed of groups who were from the previous, previous Tsarist government, right wing reactionaries and people who never accepted the socialist government
I liked the game alot
I love to hear your opinion about Aliens: Dark Descent. I find it even better than The Last Train Home.
This sounds similar to one of my favorite games of all time: Darkest Dungeon. Maybe that'd be something for Grant to take a look at, though it is a turn-based strategy game, rather than RTS...
I like trains!
This game made me want to apply for Czech citizenship. 9.5/10.
Here's a fun Rts tower defence you should try grant. Creeper tower defence (NO it's not a minecraft creeper) it's a fun game I played and hoping for a better title in the series ever since. Best genre of games that mixes tower defence and Rte and even tries the ship variations with other titles
I would watch a play through of this or a challenge run of this game by you.
I really enjoyed this game.
My biggest qualm was that combat was actually really fun, but man it was such a drain on your resources.
Stealth was just soo good, but soo time consuming.
18:45 I had to leave three guys at a station behind despite having the materials to upgrade every single living space.
Ima hold off on this vid cuz in the first few min ive become hucked enough to buy
