  • This Twincharged Lancia Delta S4 has been one of the biggest Stars of European Hillclimb Racing for over 20 years, and now on the twilight of his career, it is still an impressive machine to behold. Well over 600Hp ( latest numbers vailable are 760Hp/690Nm) from its stroked 2.0L, 4 cylinder Engine aided by both a Turbo and Supercharger, and weighing only 890Kg, makes this still one of the fastest accelerating Monsters in the Sport, having clocked a 0-100Km/h sprint in 1,9 seconds and 0-200Km/h in 7,6 seconds.
    Driven by Swiss Racing driver and Hillclimb Racing Legend Bruno Ianniello, here it can be seen attacking Oberhallau Hillclimb and the Montée des Lègendes festival.

    The supercharger is so loud , I think because it's actually a hair bigger than the engine itself :
    -Abarth R18 = 1,8 liter roots blower.
    -88.5 mm bore x 71.5 mm stroke = 1760 cc.

    I can never get tired of watching this dynamic duo in action.Both are true legends of hillclimb racing and are,along with Georg Plasa and his BMW e36 and Reto Meisel and his Mercedes 190 Judd powered cars,among first dynamic duos that made me hillclimb fan.Despite both car and driver beeing older they still show great speed.Thanks for this and for the work you put in your videos.

    A beautiful but deadly racing machine - its a mechanical pyschopath . The S4 was one of the fastest group B rally cars created, but it what it had in speed it lacked in stability , it was incredibly difficult to drive what was effectively a 700hp hot hatch. Very prone to oversteer in corners!

      I believe someone else attempted to make a twincharged around the same era after lancias success with it. And they got like one incredibly fast lap before it blowing to pieces on the track.

      it did. In 1986 after the portugal accident, the late Henri Toivenen tested his works S4 around Estoril, and it was reported at the time that his lap time would have placed him sixth on the current F1 grid of that year.

      What should also be mentioned is that this was during the turbo-era with F1 cars producing well over 1000hp during races (up to 1450hp is reported).

      @@TheMadmagik It's a nice story, but it's a bit of a myth. The rally car is heavier and even on full boost still only has about half the power, there's just no way it would have a chance against the F1 cars which were lighter, had lower centre of gravity, much better aero, wider and stickier rubber, and were purpose built open-wheeler race cars, not modified road cars like Group B cars were. Plus, the times Henri was being compared to the F1 cars were only testing, they weren't going anywhere near flat out.

      Clocked at 0-60 in 2.7 seconds on gravel. Yes, on gravel. That was back in the day, in 1986. On some occasions it got under 2 on tarmac!

    There are faster cars, there are more powerful cars, but never before has a car been created, and never again will it be , that demanded total, unwavering commitment and skill to drive. With the S4, you almost have to anticipate the next corner before you have left the last one, the car has no regard for braking distance or thinking time , it only wants to move , very very quickly.

    I'm happy to stand corrected but I remember these first time around and I'm pretty sure its a twin turbo charged engine not a turbo charge plus a supercharger because I remember joking with a friend about it at the motor show when Group B was around. The delta S4 main credentials were 1) 4 wheel drive to match the audi, 2) mid engined 3) Twin turbo charged 6-700 Hp depending on type of event /state of tune.

      It has Abarth/Lancia Volumex roots type supercharger + KKK turbocharger.
      The Trifux evolution of the engine was supposed to have a variable geometry type of twin-turbo, but Group B was abolished

      Hey Gino we certainly know Dieter Knuttel´s RS200, in a way it was already featured on our Channel. In fact the most viewed video of our Channel is with that RS200..but with a different owner/driver ;) We have access to some footage of it on the Berg Cup with Dieter at the wheel but we have to work on the proper permissions and licenses to publish it. If we can have them, we will have a video of it for sure 👍

    How competitive is this car really? I haven't found much about the results other than a victory from 2008 in Erschdorf

      Has always been competitive in its Class and has won a lot of hillclimb in its Class during the years. Alongside multiple Swiss Championships in the Toruing Car Class. Nowadays and with both car and driver getting older it is not on the very Top, but it is still posting impressive results.

      It is the supercharger in this case. As the cars is coming you are hearing the supercharger whine and as it passes by you start hearing the Turbo blowing ;)

Without doubt this was the best interpretation of all time, from Lancia for the Engine regulations in group B. The supercharger to help remove the lag and then the Turbo at the end of the revrange.
