  • Shooting and briefly discussing the various military handguns through the years. Again, these are the firearms I actually own. I do not have absolutely every firearm ever used by the military; however, I DO have most of the major adoptions through the years. Obviously, this is just an overview and a look at the evolution of technology, not an attempt to explore any one firearm in detail.

Remember to check the description for links to most of these main handguns. On some of them, such as the 1911 and Beretta, we have several videos and comparisons through the years you might search for. I just linked to one video for each handgun. No videos yet on the 1805 Harpers Ferry or Colt Walker. I've not had them all that long.
Also, this was a one-take, first-take video, as are most of our videos. I knew I had to move along pretty fast in order to keep it under 40 minutes, and I left out a few things I should have shared. My brain doesn't work as well when I'm in a hurry, which is a scary thought.

I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" I scream as I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and accidentaly nail the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

I honestly think it would be cool to use a .75 caliber brown bess for home defense no cap. (Pun intended) Imagine you fire a 700 grain musketball into some guy sealing your T.V. and when questioned by the police you only refer to the intruder as a redcoat.

I appreciate the enthusiasm but a lot of these are wrong
And the ‘lock’ part of caplock refers to the lock mechanism that the revolvers don’t have, so they’d just be called cap and balls
The SAA stands for single action army so no need to put navy in there
Also colts last name wasn’t Paterson
The Colt Paterson gets its name from being manufactured in Paterson New Jersey
      Colts last name was Colt
So it’s just be called the Colt walker
Also the ‘black flintlock’ was a caplock

    Awesome presentation!
It's exactly what I've been searching for for years! Our american family roots go back to before the American Revolution. From then on, we've had soldiers in every US war--except Granada (I was stationed in Alaska at that time). Since I retired, after 28 yrs of military service, I've been on a quest to build a shooter collection of all the firearms our family carried into battle so my 5 grandkids can learn about & then shoot the firearms their ancesters used to help build this great country. So far, I've been able to acquire all but a Beretta 92, a Colt SAA, an 1861/3 Springfield, a Pennsylvania Long Rifle, & it's accompanying flintlock pistol before my military retirement funds ran out.
I plan to use this video as an intro to show them what their ancestors shot just before the kids learn to actually shoot & care for them.
I pray you have, or are going to make, a video on the history of US military long guns to accompany this one!
I salute you for what you do! ,
    Mike R.

I really enjoyed learning all about the cap revolvers (saying it like that makes me think of those kiddie toys, haha!) and the evolution into the cartridge revolvers. I especially found the patent part interesting

The first handgun I ever fired was an M1911. The SN was 000549. The rifling in the barrel was gone and the stippling on the grips was gone as well. It rattled but it fired and I qualified with it.

Really great video as always from you. Interesting to see sidearm evolution thru the years. In my brace of firearms I have one cap-n-ball revolver purchased in 1984. A Pietta Confederate Navy in .44 cal. I know the originals were in .36 but it was a great buy from Gander Mountain for $40 + shipping. A hoot to shoot but a bitch to clean. Still though, it's one of my favorites.
On a sad note, my deepest sympathies to residents of Tennessee for the davistation they have recently suffered. Hope recovery is swift, bless them all.
