I'm watching In the Heat of the Night right now and I never ever skip the intro to the show. This man's vocals are above reproach. They set the tone and feel of the south back then and puts one in the right mood before the show begins. He is outstanding!❤ Heat is the BEST show ever!❤
You're right about that one of my favorite television shows I'm watching it right now !🔥🔥♥️💙 I love listening to Bill Champlin... I loved him when he was Chicago!
I record every episode and watch them over and over again lol nothing else showing on tv caught nowadays really catches my undivided attention like in the heat of the night and I probably wasn’t even thought of when that came out
R.I.P. Carroll O'Connor and Howard Rollins You are both sorely missed This was also my dad's favorite show, God Bless His Soul, May He R.I.P. We Love You Dad Carl Lee Hubbard, We Miss You Chief
I love when he sings this... We watch the reruns of the show and my 9 year old and I sing it together with all the runs and voice inflections... His version is so gritty..love it
@@suebouchard8198 I believe Bill Champlin played the keyboards, the piano, the organ and both of the guitars in the 2008 recording. BTW this song was written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman who wrote numerous hit songs back in the 1960s.
I saw the movie numerous times as a kid , Sidney was just the most charismatic man , and henry was also top rate. As a coloured person myself , ( not from america but) it was a stark reminder of the insidious black and white divide, that to me it was more than just a great cop show , it sowed the seeds and gave me hope that despite all the hatred around me, i could raise myself above it, and forge my own place in a difficult situation. The tv show was great , marvelous actors , terrific score, but for mine yu cant go past the original movie, it just had a gravity about it that stayed with yu after it was long gone.
He won several Best Actor awards for the same role, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a British Academy Film Award, a New York Film Critics Circle Award, and one from the National Board of Review, the nation's oldest film review board.
This guy has SOUL‼️. I read that a lot of people thought he was a BLACK MAN. Listening to theme song of the show, back in the day, I always thought he was a White Man. He has so much soul and rythme. Great musician‼️. He son was a contestant on THE VOICE. The son can sing well, also. 2022🎼🎹🎶🎸🎷🎻🎺🎵🎶🎹🎼IN THE HEAT of the NIGHT ❣️
May have done the theme for the hit TV show but this song was original sung by Ray Charles for the movie soundtrack in 1967 and written by Quincy Jones. Give credit to where credit is due.
- -Unit Theory- - he said he "did the theme" for the tv show... Which simply means they recorded his voice for it. Which is true. He never said he wrote it.
I asked Bill about this song at a Chicago Fan Club convention. He said that Carroll O’Connor wanted his buddy, Robert Goulet. O’Connor’s wife, Nancy, wanted Bill 😂😂
Seems like he would’ve introduced the song as Ray Charles’ song instead of “I did the theme for a tv show in America here it is lol either way I LOVE his version
True lol maybe it slipped his mind. But anyway his version i feel has more power but Ray's version just has that something to it. I love both but the tv version beats Ray's version by a smidge.

I agree. I make it a habit to watch in the heat of the night every morning at 10am.
We watch it every single day!

This was also my dad's favorite show, God Bless His Soul, May He R.I.P.

Howard Rollins was gay, and he died of aids.

The original song in the heat of the night was written, and performed on the soundtrack for the movie heat of the night by Ray Charles.
Written by Quincy Jones with Alan & Marilyn Bergman. Marilyn just recently passed away (January 2022). RIP
Bill Champlin what a great musician formerly of the band Chicago
Who is on the keyboard? Wow!
@@suebouchard8198 I believe Bill Champlin played the keyboards, the piano, the organ and both of the guitars in the 2008 recording. BTW this song was written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman who wrote numerous hit songs back in the 1960s.
