Most truckers I know use a hammer as a tire thumper. I use a 2lbs ball peen hammer. Claws get in the way when thumping tandem tires and the extra weight is great for hammering stuck pins and frozen breaks.
I'm an electrician. If you have any electrician buddies ask them if they can get you 18 inches of copper 500-750 kc/mil wire. It's basically like a solid lead pipe. It would shatter bone easily. And it's kinda hard to argue that a piece of wire is a weapon. In NJ we can't carry anything considered to be a weapon. Even a baseball bat you better have a ball and a glove with you too.
Fellow newjersian here. I regularly have impromptu upper body workout sessions with a 5 lb Indian club i keep in my car. Wrapped in bank line for improved grip. Then there is the cold steel shovel for snow and mud emergencies. We got to be creative
@juliobalmaseda7527 Our self defense laws are such bullshit compared to southern states like Texas. AND trying to get a concealed carry permit is damn near impossible. In my 20's I had a 12guage zip gun made out of gas pipe. I like being creative though. That 5 pounder sounds great and wtf can they say about the shovel? Idk if you have the smaller one that's a thrower but either way I like it. Thanks for taking the time to share that 👍
@phillipmargrave Yea bro, DPRJ sounds about right. Watch this guy's video about what we should chose to carry for self defense, dropped about 5 days ago. NJ is so fuked up I spent 7yrs of my life as a kid transitioning into a man in prison all for protecting myself. 20yrs later I've never been arrested. Read the comments I told my story about how the court looks upon self defense in this state even if there's a gun to your face. I just improvise and use my brain since I can't carry a gun legally but criminals love to and if your familiar with Jersey City, Patterson, Newark where whites are the minority and I work in those areas all the time. I always have something on me that wasn't intended to be a weapon but sure as hell could be. I wouldn't be caught dead without something that can take someone out. And it's only getting worse.
I second this. I found a 12" off cut piece of high voltage cable (Australia - I think it's 330kv or 500kv) it has multiple strands of heavy wire wrapped in some serious rubber and is the best truncheon you could get. I wouldn't have minded a couple more inches but hey it's an off cut.
I made one from a bo-staff. I'd already cut the staff down to make a walking cane and longer handle for a Trail Hawk. Started driving a school bus because once I hit 60, manufacturing companies didn't want me working there anymore. Going into my 4th year now. I made mine short, around 10". That way it fits in my day bag, long enough to thump a tire and perfect for less than lethal CQB. The area I drive is not the best. I've had adults try to enter my bus at stops. Sure, I earned my Black Belt 20 years ago, and still train daily, but from a seated position, buckled in, a driver can be at a disadvantage really quick. I practice with it both seated and standing, into an old tire. (don't want to tear up my bag) Straight jabs, ridge hand, hammer fists and occasional swings. Most importantly, I practice unbuckling and leaving my seat quickly almost every time I get up. Had an incident only last June, a lady was coming after two middle schoolers, started up the steps, I put my hand out in the "don't come closer" position and told her 3 times, "do not come on this bus". I was up out of the seat and blocking the isle pretty quickly. Radioed in for the police. (her vehicle had me blocked in too). Cops took 15 minutes. She left. My boss reviewed the tape and said I was out of that seat in a flash. lol The camera lens was foggy due to early morning dew. No ID on the crazy lady. I know, long story about not needing my thumper, but wanted to describe how quickly and unexpectedly something can happen.
I use a tire thumper multiple times a day, yes, I'm a truck driver. They work great as intended until the temperatures start dropping well below 0. Then, I have to use my 3# hammer to check tires. Cold rubber just doesn't bounce. As a fighting tool, they would work great and if attacked with a deadly weapon, use the force multiplier tire thumper/billy club already in your hand. When facing deadly force, you can respond with lethal force. Just respond to the attack and live to face the law. As to targeting with a club, I know BOB doesn't have arms, but the first target should be your attacker's weapon hand. An old self-defense instructor, Col. Monstery, from the 1800s, suggested elbow to fingertips and the side of the head. With a cane, they are all easy to reach before a knife can get to you. But, with the shorter thumper, I'd suggest the elbow-hand area first. And, if you're going to aim for it once, aim for it a bunch. A minimum 3-shot combo from different directions should be sent with fast wrist moulinets. Disarm the attacker and he might run away. If not, then you might have to work your way into the head, neck, & collarbone area.
In the military I was taught to jab with a baton as it came out of the ring to the solar plexus. Then reverse the jab to the bladder two handed.. Followed by holding the baton at both ends come down on a collar bone, then a strike to the calf or thigh. Next take the other collar bone and the other leg. This is the “flow” discussed.
Decades ago I had an ex M.P. buddy who said they all kicked in on a pot during the week & on Monday who ever had broken the most collar bones won, LOL...
I have a hand carved one that my wifes Great Grandfather made over 75 years ago. Still solid and very reliable but it hangs in its perfection in my house nowadays
I love all the handheld tools, SAP, Brass Nuckles but especially my 1&1/8 octagonal Hickory cane. I DO have a legit reason for a cane so I CAN go anyplace without question. I'll not forget my first time at the local court house going in for jury duty. I raised both arms for the "wand" check and right away I'm told to keep that arm down with my cane.
That's exactly the one I have and when I go for my walks in the city of Santa Ana, CA, I take it with me. I get looks, but they go away when people see I'm just walking.
In addition to looking up the legal uses of an impact weapon, like the tire thumper, it will also be important to know whether the tire thumper is considered a "Dangerous" weapon or a "Deadly" weapon. There may be an outright classification for the thumper, or it may be classified with regard to the context in which it is used.
Hell yea, I've been meaning to get this exact one, Fish Bat's are awesome too, I have a BAMBO BAT, ITS ABOUT 17" AND MADE OF WOOD SO SOLID IT SINKS IN WATER, I WORLD ONLY USE IT IF I WERE TRULY OUTMATCHED
in high school, when the teacher from wood shop would leave class to go have coffee, or goof off, we would turn billy clubs on the lathe. And make a few other probably prohibited items. Had to be quick. :0
I have a Tire Thumper made from solid Aluminum Alloy. 11 inches long, 1.2 lbs. It's made by a Company called Kombativ. I got it earlier this year for $55.00. Not bad. I definitely don't want to be on the receiving end of it. Don't say anything without a Lawyer if you use a thumper for self defense.
Thanks for the video. I think we need to be active in our state politics so that we can change the laws to advantage good citizens and disadvantage bad citizens. If I'm on a jury (unlikely because of my health unless I get an accommodating judge), I'm going to vote "not guilty" on any charges filed against a good citizen who uses something in self-defense. If we change the laws and vote "not guilty" when good people resist bad people, then many bad people are going to learn that being harmful to other people is a poor life choice.
I drove a truck for 20 years. 10 as an over the road company driver. 4 as a local company driver and 6 as a local owner Operator. I am definitely not any expert on these but can tell you (I've made a few bets and always won) that NO ONE can tell if a truck tire is over or under inflated by hitting it and it's not even a legal way to tell if it is (tire pressure gauge is the only legal thing) I never carried one nor used one on a tire or a head either 😂. The amount of companies that have rules of what you can and can't carry in your truck is mind blowing and a lot of them forbid tire thumpers because they view them as a "weapon"
When I was driving a box truck delivering fitness equipment, we used to keep extra weight stack selector rods in the cab. They were 18-24" steel rods about 3/4" thick with holes every 1 1/2" down the side. Never needed one but they were always there.
We got pulled over quit often as a teenager in my home town. Nothing to do for us or the cops so we always seem to run into each other. They always asked me what mine was for, i said "its my tire checker" and they laughed and just let it go
@@411Outdoors Much better not to have anything that can be seen by the police if they shine a flashlight around your car's interior. It is easy enough to hide things under a coat, towel, blanket or even a hat and scarf.
I have what we call a rounders bat here in the UK. It's similar in size to a tire thumper & can easily be wielded with one hand. I figured what you lose in range to a baseball bat, you gain in speed with a smaller rounders bat.
Tire thumper alternative. Go to the plumbing dept. of the big box store. 1. 28 inch threaded iron water pipe. 2. two end caps. 3. black spray paint. Assemble. Chose either 1 inch or 3/4 inch pipe, depending on your hand size. You now have an unbreakable tire thumper/Filipino fighting stick. Put it on the floor of the car. No one will steal it at a car wash - your tire thumper would be stolen. I keep a couple in the house. Your kid's friends, the local truant kid who steals from your home will take your guns, jewelry, television and never the metal stick by the front door or the bedroom door. Basic, ergonomically correct strikes in folder knife/fixed blade knife/entrenching tool/kukri knife/Filipino stick fighting can be taught in one day . . . and thereafter, it is the responsibility of the student to practice. It isn't magic or require different colored "belts".
Daniel, you talked about the baseball bat being too slow and awkward against an aware opponent, and of course I agree. In fact, after studying the matter for years, I have come to the conclusion that the Native Americans in the eastern US would have almost always used their ball headed war clubs to hit unsuspecting victims from behind - they'd be nearly useless in face to face combat for the same reason you mentioned with the baseball bat.

Tons of dead ash trees on my property, thanks to the emerald ash borer. Some of the trees have decayed from fungus infestation and became punky wood, but others are hard as rock. Ash, as you probably know, was the wood of choice for baseball bats and MLB used them for a long time. Hard wood, very shock resistant, makes great tool handles, ideal for your purpose.
