How to Rappel with a Backpack and Tactical Gear

- Rappeling with a backpack is no big thing. You just need to know how to do it and work on this basic skill. I recommend to master rappeling without any gear, before you start to rappel with full gear and backpack.
When I go climbing, my backpacks are often light enough to stay on my back without the need to use a chest harness.
When the pack gets more heavy, attaching it to the belay loop and let it hang between the legs, can be the better option. But this also depends on rock quality, lighting conditions, time and how much space you have around you.

I keep my pack on when rappelling down trees (i saddle hunt) the long bridge on my saddle style harness keeps my center of gravity low so i just wear my pack down. I use the same setup to get down cliffs sometimes and have my full pack on while doing that aswell. Due to the loop nature of the saddle i can also keep my waist belt on and keep the weight off my shoulders and the pack super solid on my back so there is no sway.
I also keep my backpack on when rappelling out of trees, I keep my back band on so I can't flip backwards
i prefer backpack on my belay device, much easier than backpack being on your back, especially if you have to move up and down the rope few times.

Great vid! I did sort of flinch when u clipped the descender on and I saw no real (physical-goes-through-device) lock on that.. what's the type?
Other than that I love your Rappel extension, but would put the prussic on a separate carabiner... That way, if the main biner breaks, the prussic would be backup on its own biner, and the main one is not a single point of failure.

In my experience as a mountaineer, it’s better to clip the hanging backpack to the descender instead of clipping to the belay loop. That way the pack doesn’t pull on you and you don’t feel that additional weight.
It’s the same principle as in rope rescue. You always clip the casualty to your descender and not to your harness. (Although you have always a backup unloaded link to your harness)
Well thank God I was just playing Call of Duty and trying to figure out how to rappel with a ruck and beltkit!

Lower bergen on its own....or clip to rope [via prusik or even to belay device] not your harness. Rope takes the weight not your body and if you get into trouble it's easier to manage.
I don't this would ever come in handy in most places on earth lol. By the time you have all this setup, you may as well have just walked around obstacle.

Ja, das ist auch ne super Idee. Aber habe das Gefühl, dass es so zumindest beim Überstieg über die Kante zuverlässiger alles richtig liegt. Wenn man was mit in den Karabiner vom Abspielgerät hängt, kann der sich ggf. verdrehen und der Rucksack hätte weniger Distanz zum Fels.
Aber du hast schon recht, mit Rucksack oben hat man dann auch nicht so das Pendel am Körper :)

Can you recommend any sources of information for improvised climbing
/mountaineering techniques using limited equipment?
My unit (light infantry) carries 25 feet of tubular webbing and a karabiner each for river crossings, marking routes into locations etc... and I was wondering what we could do with this or perhaps just a little more equipment to give us maximum versatility with minimum weight/number of items. Thank you!

Regarding sources online: Sadly I have no real recommendation. But some good impulses can be collected from the civil crevasse Rescue scenarios. There they also work a lot with prusiks and without special devices.
@@ripperkon @ripperkon UK, we've just been to Slovenia to learn some basic mountain warfare techniques there and it was amazing. Totally different tactics and skills. They showed some good techniques to descend over icy ground with no harness and retrieving the rope after. I think we'll need a climbing sling each and we can do lots more than with just the webbing/karabiner.
I looked at a few old mountaineering books and I think we can use them to short rope. I'll check out his channel and rescue techniques thank you 👍🏿

I have a big question how can you retrieve your rope once your down on the ground and not leve it behind ????
You use the rope double, then pull one end once you're down on the ground (or the next perch). You do need a rope twice the length of your descend obviously.
You make a choice to either have the center of the rope around your tie-off, but that's a lot of abrasion on the rope. Or you use a tree-saver (rope-saver) with the knowledge that it's lost once you retrieve the rope...
Or if you can't risk leaving trace/spoor/equipment behind, you tie one end of the tree-saver into the middle of your (doubled) line, run one leg of rope through the other hole of the tree-saver. Once down on the ground, you pull the end of your line that you tied in, and both the tree-saver and rope should come down... Big warning here; if the tree-saver or the leg of rope that was run through it snags on something, you now have a tree-saver and a big rope tangled mess hanging off a cliff and the enemy chasing you or local patrol might very well find it. Thus giving away your position, direction of travel and the fact that your a trained mountaineer and they need to step up their game...
I think he has a vid doing a speed rappel on the thinner black rope from the dropleg bag where he's doubled like that. Same cliff...

what do you personally think of the Skylotec Spark?
I've also always descended with the eight, with weapon armor and K9 on my back in a dog harness.
I'm still hesitating between the Spark and the PETZL RIG, I personally think the Spark is more robust!

Beal Escaper could be a solution. Or a tag line.
But when I want to retrieve the rope, I usually double up the rope and use an alpine tube for rappelling.

Hey im still figuring out my rappelling setup, im using a half body harness rn, but its kinda annoying bcz im using a plate carrier when i rappell and its just choke my neck and it bring my center garvity to the back, any suggestions for how i can setup my plate carrier to be connected to my half body harness using webbing?, i would like to make setup permanent on my plate carrier, if you can reply to this it will a great help, and keep up the good content

Tactical rappel? Show without alpine device. Only rope, improvised harness, hms carabiner and prusik knot.
Not sure what military you were in. But we indeed had issues tubes, eights, harnesses etc.
But sure, a improvised setup is also important to know. And techniques shown in this video can also be adapted to a minimalist setup.
@@ripperkonFor almost each climbing device there is rope technics. In case of loosing it you always have your skills. That's what cadets are learned at good climbing school.
