As someone who grew up riding in (and eventually driving) a family-owned '71 Charger R/T - loaded with SE options like hidden headlamps, power windows, cassette deck/recorder, AC - I may be a bit biased; but it was one of the baddest muscle cars ever built. That Hellcat may have the horsepower, handling and tech, but I guarantee it doesn't have half the soul/vibe of the '71.
The 71 is my vote. I have owned 4 Chargers 71, 72, 73 ,74.. engines for their years. 2- 440s 1-400 and 1-360 Theres something about the torque and the ride of an old muscle car.
I had a 72' only difference was white interior and s 400ci 4bbl. I miss it I should've kept it but being young and dumb and i only paid $2500 and it was not far off in shape from this one.
@@theunskilledmechanic being a 72 with a 400 I don’t know if a 4 speed was an option. The RT was gone for 72 and was replaced by the Ralley which is pretty rare itself
You're talking about a 50 year difference here. For perspective, imagine a 71' Charger compared to a 1919 Dodge. Yeah...the 71 is going to be very, very impressive. What you're not getting is the uniqueness of the period. Car performance in the 60's leaped forward outpacing safety, handling, efficiency, and braking in exchange for straight line performance. And then when the 70's hit, that all became important and we entered a dark age of performance that lasted into the 90's. The 71' Charger R/T was STILL super impressive as a performance car all through the late 70's and 80's and even into the 90's as owners got better at modding their cars and aftermarket parts got better. An old school big-block muscle car with minor mods in the early 90's could still pull a sub 6 second 0 to 60 time and a high 12 second quarter mile time. That was blisteringly fast vs most factory cars at the time. Let's hope the 2019 Chargers, Challengers, and Durangos will still be killing it 30 years from now.
Go to almost any car show or cruise in and the old 71 will draw more attention than the Hellcat unless the Hellcat is on fire with no less than 3 different fire brigades attendants tried to coast is clear on it. Sorry SRT fans but while I do like and respect the Hellcat I prefer the style and looks of the 71
I have a 71 Charger R/T All i need is a Charger Hellcat now. New cars don't have the same originality as the old cars. Cookie cutter cars. What I like about the Hell cat. Massive power and they can actually stop and go around corners. The old ones don't stop good and don't corner for S**t.
The '71 Charger is much cooler. It has sharp styling and it has a soul. That other Hellcat may be faster and more safer, but it has boring styling and no soul.
And to think I like the new Charger's styling. Has a fastback roofline giving a nod to the 1966-67 Charger, taillights from 1969-70 models and a wonderful low rumble, not overwhelming but not quiet either. I love the '71-72, later '73-74 models, but my favorite will always be the 1968 MY with the clean grill and Corvette style taillights

I completely agree!
They should do it with day 2 mods on that 71!
The old Charger all day

1971 hands down... no contest
I love your enthusiasm for being such a young guy and being so knowledgeable on Mopars. Great job on the video👍👍
Thank you!

Sounds like a beautiful car! Was it a 4 speed?

I love the 71 and 72 but not so much the 73 and 74. The changes to the side glass and slight changes in body lines hurt the look in my opinion
Great video
Old school all the way
I miss my 71. Had trouble with flip headlights. They would turn off on their own while driving. Mine had the 15 inch wheels. And was a ltd gold
Old ever in my heart.

I like the old one, it makes a nice crackling sound, it really sells it.
The new one is cool too, just q bit quiet and not as out there
Very cool!

Haha, I agree!
Old school.
Has to be the old one........it was more ORIGINAL MORE DIFFERENT THAN ITS PREDACESSORS.......MORE FUN AND DEFINITELY MORE ENGINE CHOICES
71 is way cooler

I'm sorry I think the hell cat is ugly ! I will always take the rt any day!!!!!!!!
If it was a 68 or a 69 maybe but not a 71, Hell Cat all the way for me.
