    Joy - a video of your FULL wedding day would be amazing - start to finish, getting ready to wedding couple exit. I LOVE the ones that kind of start us out in the car on the way to the first location, set us up as though we are the second shooter and you are filling us in on everything before the day starts. THOSE are the videos I watch the most, and they are the ones I learn from best. Watching and listening to you in the actual moment is HUGE, and it helps me the best. When you also then, go back and do voice overs to explain, that helps a lot as well. When you talk through your thought process on what you do and why you do it, that's what really helps us learn what works best. One of the things that I struggle with the most is just knowing how to pose them - in every situation, at every part of the day.

    You were REALLY workin' it!!! So many great photos for the new Mr. & Mrs. to choose from. ... Love the 2nd shooter getting pix too. (And the 'sneaker' photo of the bride on the steps... fantastic!!!) ... This particular bride has an AWESOME smile, and she took your direction well. It all came together so nicely. ... ... ... ... ... ... One last point, and I defer to you on this (you're the pro photog, not me), but it has always been a pet-peeve of mine when wedding photographers wear anything other than black. I prefer them to blend in for a high-end ceremony. I (personally) find photographers wearing casual-ish clothes distracting as an attendee to the wedding. Again, my personal preference. But I defer to you since you've been doing this for so many years. ... ... ... Great work! You're skilled and passionate about your craft!!!

    Awesome job, love the videos. I think a video on knowing how to be in the right place at the right time is a video I would be interested in. Like understanding a timeline and how to get what you need, and how to know when to do it. I’m taking about that internal clock that you have to have on a wedding day to make sure you keep up with the day. Hard to explain but you probably know what I’m talking about.

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I think I know what you're onto. I've found, with that, it's all about experience and really doing it. But I will think about this more and see if this is something I could explain well! Thanks!

    • @blakethomas432
      @blakethomas432 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joy Michelle Photography totally understand and agree that experience is key. It’s something that I think about often and struggle with. Hoping it gets easier as I go. Maybe take a basic timeline from a wedding and then explain how you could break it down and try to plan when you would do certain aspects. Or maybe a video on how you approach preparing for a wedding or how you keep up with the photos that you need to capture on the day of. I usually have a check list of photos, a list of the combinations of people for the family stuff, the timeline, and an album with wedding inspiration poses on my phone (just in case I have a creative block during a posing session).

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Emily!! It’s so nice for exactly what you said. Getting more than one perspective on a moment. Hi Joy, I'd like to know if you were shooting in aperture priority mode. What ISO settings do you work with in a wedding such as this? I know it's very difficult to shoot all manual mode when everything such as natural light changes so much due to camera angles and you can't risk greatly over or under exposing the photos. Thanks

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I shoot in Manual actually but you’re right! It’s tricky. Generally I’m using the lowest possible ISO for the scenario to avoid noise. 100-400 when out doors and 1600-4K in doors. I’ll be uploading the reception footage soon and share the iso settings with that one

    • @johnhudgeons5283
      @johnhudgeons5283 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Joymichelle Appreciate it. I often shoot manual as well when the the ambient light levels are fairly stable. I've tried aperture priority a few times but have issues with the shutter speed dropping to low if the light drops off.

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnhudgeons5283 Yeah I know what you mean! Aperture priority is great in certain situations. I have found that in ceremonies with super dappled lighting coming through trees where the clouds and sun are changing a lot it's really helpful. Some photogs like Susan Stripling use it at all times which I find fascinating.

    One more question - do you often use ETTL. I noticed during the detail shots of the cards you mentioned 1/16th power flash (1:43). I'd assume the flash was set to manual at that moment. It also mentions at 1:43 a shutter speed of 1/320 - how did you exceed the camera's maximum of 1/200 or 1/250th shutter speed using a flash? Thanks again.

    • @xxLoveElizabethxx
      @xxLoveElizabethxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooh good question and I'd like to hear the answer as well. This is something that confuses me as I start to learn OCF. There are times I want to fill out shadows on bright days with flash, but the image overexposes since I can't bring the shutter speed faster than 1/200.

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question! I'm not sure! lol because you're right, it shouldn't have exceeded the 1/250 and I wasn't using high speed sync either.
      I could have jotted the wrong shutter speed down...that's very possible.

    Thank you so much for this video! All of your videos are helping me out so much! I was just curious if you have a typed out schedule of the day just for photos? Since I’m just starting out, I’m doing a lot more smaller weddings and some don’t have brides maids or any kind of first look. I will ask for a schedule of the day and they won’t have one because the wedding is so laid back. Do I need to make my own scheduling or have the bride or groom one? And if so, what should that schedule look like?

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kayla! Yes, I have a full timeline of the day from the couple, and I often create a "photo timeline" for my team that has even more details of what types of images I want to be getting at each part of the day. Running through these details helps me to envision the day before it happens so that as it unfolds I'm already prepared with some ideas.
      I would recommend that if the couple is laid back and doesn't have a plan, that you create your own and run it by them :)
      You can look up sample wedding timelines for a good idea of what an average wedding day looks like but I think you will find that with time this gets easier.

      @@medwayboy66 High ISO doesn't necessarily mean noise, even though noise is associated with a high ISO. It just takes practice to know when to stop increasing your shutter speed and start boosting the ISO. I know this was posted a year ago to my comment, but I do have a question. Is it best to shoot RAW or in JPG? I have my first wedding shoot coming up and feel shooting in RAW is going to create a lot of work (Editing) or is it best to just go straight for jpg and not worry about editing? Great Vid and tips, its helped a lot. (and clamed my nerves).

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Stephen, RAW all the way. You can set your camera to shoot raw and jpeg at the same time so that you have the easy access to jpeg files but the raws hold so much more valuable data and information for editing and correcting exposure issues. You’ll need editing software to process them - I love lightroom

  • @PGF1953
    @PGF1953 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It was very informative! I was so pleased to see how you were dealing with the lessening of light as the day went on but I couldn't really tell from this if you used any flash on the beach when you were shooting the bride and groom. OR did you go up in ISO at that time. I have shot in that light before and I didn't get such great exposure as you did! The finer details are so helpful for shooting no matter what you are aiming for! Thanks for the fun video!

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did use some flash on the beach but not for all the images. I would go back and forth because my couple like natural light images and I wanted to be sure to deliver that style to them but also give them the option of the flash style too. I did end up raising my ISO a great deal on the beach to about 1600-2000.

I have turned to videography and have a wedding to film in April just for a friend and she knows the risks that im not a professional (but I kind of am if you know what I mean) and there are definite risks of things not working out optimally although these risks are prob going to be minimised by good preparation.
