@@ioanluke3220 ballista have never had that sort of range, although a modern one using prefab parts, modern metallurgy, springs and a compound bow system could be very impressive a cannon or howitzer would still out perform it not to mention missiles. Modern main battle tanks don't have that range with their main gun either usually engagingtargets betwee 2 and 3 miles. Half a kilometer or 500 yards on the other hand is do able with trebuchet and late medieval ballista.
Yeah the vibrations of a smashing weapon can cause massive damage even if an armor piece looks relatively undented. It's one reason why they avoid using those kind of weapons in sparring. You can break an arm blocking a flail strike using a decent shield for example.
remember though, swords are great for their ability to be sheathed and unsheathed very quickly, which makes them excellent for self defense whereas it is not as easy to be carrying around a war hammer all the time
I love Shad, but Tyranth and Nate play so well off each other's personality that it makes for such an enjoyable watch. I'm really overjoyed that you guys are able to continue pumping out videos as I love this era of content, and everyone there does such a great job bringing it to life in the 21th century. Man I REALLY want a sci-fi game to have a character with a high tech Bec De Corbin. Imagine what you could do with that, it could be a combined, spear, 2 handed war pick, and a light construct hammer, and let you swap between all 3 with the same weapons. Heck maybe all 3 could be energy constructs and you could even let the spike fire energy. It could be the main weapon of a elite militaristic nation.

The Warhammer 40k Custodes already have a Bec that can shoot. It's called the Guardian Spear. I'm not into 40k, but I DO want to steal the idea for a Pathfinder character...

The 3 different weapons at the end of a stick formula is a winner. You just have to pick which 2 you want out of Beak, Axe, and Hammer. Every combo is good.

On seeing the weapon used to penetrate, the opponent is immobile and they're incredibly open. Big open baseball swings. I think worth a test would be frontal attacks. When they do the test to extra the Bec, he pretty much throws the Doll directly behind him into his allies. Then he has recovery time where he is open and the Doll's ally or more could strike. In a formation it would be hard to get those horizontal swings. So I would like to see these horizontal baseball swings where the Doll's "Side" is the target, as that should reduce the flat, unangled surfaces. Also coming from the sides also brings arms in as a factor. The hit will still cripple a man, but less fatal. Bec test #2: Overhead vs Helmets.
I feel like both piercing and crunching someone's arm (especially the dominant one) is pretty much just as good as a fatal hit. Like what are you gonna do with a basically dead arm to stop them from just... Swinging again.

Again, they attack from an angle to get a full swing, discount having to dedend or multiple opponents. If you do kill a guy a in a single swing, but die as a result the weapon wouldn't have been used. My claim is they're missing something
The Bec has quickly become one of my favourite medieval weapons thanks to your use of it in videos It's so powerful with so little effort and it doesn't even look like much more than a slightly altered spear or axe to someone who doesn't know much about medieval weapons

True, it's devastating, but the most powerful blow comes from attacking sideways, exposing your flank. In a battle, you would need protection on that side, or you will go down too.
I think the spike could be used to finish off already downed armored opponent. You could just place the spike on the body and put your feet on the hammer part and apply force through your body weight - just like you would with a shovel. I bet it would go through chain mail easily.
Shadlands is awesome! I love it's more light hearted funny style. It gives the impression you don't feel the need to be all that serious on that channel, and can actually have some fun too ^^ I've absolutely loved it's content so far!
I love the back and forth competition, challenges, and attempts at "gentlemanly" trying to leverage their way in taking turns for what they want to do. I will say though, I think Nate needs to work on the timing of his swing and Tyranth on stepping in with his thrusts, include the attack with a full step (though maybe these guys know this). Still, that the beak of the weapon could sail through armor without 100% proper technique is very impressive.
I'm so glad to see that Tyranth's two-handed grip leads with his left hand. Why? Because I do the same thing even though I'm normally right-hand dominant. It just feels more comfortable to me, more natural.
Yup me too. Cant manage splitting wood without the left leading. Interestingly I read an opinion once that two handed axes would be used left hand forward to catch the unshielded side. Interesting thought.

Ok so to be safe from a Bec all I need js a gambuson, a few layers of kevlar, rivited chain mail, a hardened steel breastplate and a kevlar shield. Sounds completely reasonable.
I think I know why the beak didn't go through the plate the 2nd time. It looked like the 2nd hit was on the edge of one of the plate layers, which might have been stronger, and it also likely had the upper layer of plate behind it since it was likely an overlapping seam. The 1st hit was far enough away from that seam that you only had to penetrate 1 layer of plate. Love the videos guys. Wish I could have been there. Maybe someday.

An old favorite here in Portugal, it was the insignia of an infantry officer in late medieval times. That thing doesn't have the best reach, but it hits HARD!
This is basically what I argued back when you did katana vs. mail. If you put a tip on the katana matching either the spike or beak, it would penatrate. To be fair, the amount of penatration wouldn't be as significant as the beak on this as you're swing it gathering speed. The question then becomes, could it penatrate enough to hit organs?
Here's a test: gambeson, chain, and Level III ballistic plates in a carrier. Even just the plates and carrier. (Level IV's are what many soldiers wear into battle, as a point of reference)
You test triplex with the bec and see how it is performs, see if armor used to stop muskets stands up to the bec. Bullet proofed armor and tournaments with poleaxes coexisted for a bit. Prime melee weapon to mess up a dragon.
Well, I guess we can call the BERK the most SAVAGE Medieval weapon. Seriously NOTHING STOPS THIS THING! The only improvement i can think of is putting tiny spikes on the Hammer to make it like a Meat Tenderizer.
While a bec de corbin stands out in one-on-one and mixed combat where you have room to swing it, it's just not much good for massed infantry where your only options are stabbing and a very telegraphed overhead swing. Definitely the sort of weapon a medieval adventurer should consider.

Like you say, reach is a problem, and the inability to maneuver in massed infantry compounds the issue. I stand by thinking it's better suited to individuals than formations.
@@aeonise To be clear, historically you are right. Most infantry formations used big, long polearms - halberds et al. And they spent a lot of time thrusting at the other side, and going for their backs, necks and legs. My suggestion is that somewhere in that massed formation, you've got the guy with the can opener. And probably quite a few of them.

I did a bit of looking up to see what kind of soldiers could be using such a weapon as the bec... well, it was the compagnie of the "Gentilshommes à bec de corbin", in 15th/16th century France... and who were they? The personal guard of the king... makes sense!
Gather the idea behind most hammer like weapons is more the crushing effect, if you were training your troops you'd instruct em to hit with the hammer first because the time it takes to clear the piercing weapon would cost you your head ❤
While the Bec has exceptional penetration , I feel that the direction of the attacks can easily be countered and blocked . It does not have a lot of finesse other than blunt force

Fact check: That is not hardened. It is only 1.6mm mild steel. If the middle was 2mm hardened steel I don't think you would have gotten though. PS I still think I could fix that.
While I didn't get a Bec De Corbin I did pick up a really cheap Warhammer for $40 from Tractor supply company here in the US. I plan on doing some testing with it at a later date.

Even if the Corbin couldn't get through the carbon fiber armor, the person would most likely have internal trauma (ie. broken bones).

If Chivalry 2 has taught me anything about weapons, polehammers are pretty good even the 1 handed version.

A big part of the initial swing's success is that, if you look back at the footage around 12:25, the point hit right on the arrow dent.

@@aeonise To be clear, historically you are right. Most infantry formations used big, long polearms - halberds et al. And they spent a lot of time thrusting at the other side, and going for their backs, necks and legs.
My suggestion is that somewhere in that massed formation, you've got the guy with the can opener. And probably quite a few of them.

I did a bit of looking up to see what kind of soldiers could be using such a weapon as the bec... well, it was the compagnie of the "Gentilshommes à bec de corbin", in 15th/16th century France... and who were they? The personal guard of the king... makes sense!

Gather the idea behind most hammer like weapons is more the crushing effect, if you were training your troops you'd instruct em to hit with the hammer first because the time it takes to clear the piercing weapon would cost you your head ❤
While the Bec has exceptional penetration , I feel that the direction of the attacks can easily be countered and blocked . It does not have a lot of finesse other than blunt force

Fact check: That is not hardened. It is only 1.6mm mild steel. If the middle was 2mm hardened steel I don't think you would have gotten though. PS I still think I could fix that.

Ah the Bec, Big Stick Energy with a lot of options. I think the Pole Axe is shorter but if space is a real issue you still have the stabby point.
While I didn't get a Bec De Corbin I did pick up a really cheap Warhammer for $40 from Tractor supply company here in the US. I plan on doing some testing with it at a later date.
