Honda 1973 CR250m Elsinore First start in 28 years

- I purchased this bike in 2011 from California and shipped it back to New Zealand, I purchased it off two very poor pictures and the guy told me it had not run since he put it in the shed in 84 with a broken kick start return spring.
When I got it I was happy to see it was all there, I replaced the points,plug,oil, cleaned the air filter and carb, timed it to honda race spec and this is how it went.

I remember when I was a kid I always wanted a dirt bike but I had no money to get one but I knew a dude named Tony Crawford in the neighborhood and his family was all into Motocross I remember he used to race a 1973 CR125 Elsinore and we had a big Woods by the house and it had a lot of trails and I used to walk them trails then I remember Tony Crawford with his 1973 CR125 Elsinore started using the trails to practice his racing skills I can still remember it just like yesterday man it sound like one mean machine and every time he shifted he was up on one wheel I remember when I was walking on the trail and when I heard him coming I got the hell off the trail
This was the very first dirt bike I bought when I was a kid. I remember the excitement as I started it for the first time. Thanks for the memory :)

and reallly still are,
they sound about the best of any of the older MX bike's.
and are nice to ride too without being too heavy,
Thats because you have never been around any other dirtbikes? Give me a break. For the most part the type of pipe your running makes the sound difference. Bultaco's the best if you ask me. I have had several of both. Go to vitage races if you want to hear.

Poor old Scrubs loved motorbikes and used to ride everywhere with me, unfortunately she passed a couple of years ago, she made eighteen years.
Its best to always sit the bike level on a tri stand or crate other wise even with the fuel turned off you'll have a pool of fuel on the floor as it will run straight out the carb over flo tubes.or worse it'll slide off the table and crease that pretty & valuable alloy tank.
Also a tip to start the Elsinore cold is turn the fuel on lean it both sides until the fuel drips from the overflow.turn the kicker slowly until it come s up on the compression stroke and bam with a nice solid kick it will fire in 1-2 kicks every time. let the piston heat up nicely before revving the engine.keep the air filter sealed and clean the bike will last forever.

THESE BIKES WERE BEASTS, I HAD A 125 AND A 250, BOTH CAME UP ON THE PIPE AND WOULD REV TO ABOUT ( GUESS) 11,000 , SHIFT 5 MORE TIMES AND YOUD BE FLYING, I WOULD RUN CASTOR OIL IN MINE, IT WAS GREAT OIL TO RUN, KEPT THE MOTOR FRESH AS HELL, LOVED MY " SNORT"
they certainly move for old girls, when i first got it i thought it would not have much go, first mistake as I nearly put it thru the driveway fence.
My Honda CR 500 sat 16 year started Second Kick!!!
I just restored mine , I have $ 5800.00 in it . worth every penny .
The Elsinore and Yamaha 360 Mx had sounds of their own.
Hell on wheels... these bikes where bad ass! My father had one and installed a “snail pipe” on it, along with an extended swing arm it was a hill climbing monster...
Not much for suspension on these old bikes..

Awe man right when I was just starting to remember the old elsinores sound again YA WENT AND SHUT HER DOWN WTF🤬👊 nah seriously dude real sweet elsinore 👍 oh and get a damn stand for that vintage motocross bike I think it at least deserves that luxury 😉👍

I had kick starter spring break on mine way back when -nice hearing Ur bike
Me too I had to tie it up with an O ring and just push start it.
The spring was broken on this when I got it but found a new replacement.
That thing is cool..runs great..get a milk crate with a piece of plywood on top!

I had a Hodaka Super Ray. Sounded just like that. Only louder. No silencer on the stinger. Sounded like a 500 coming. My dad hated it.
i still have one and am getting it fixed so it will start and run again.Mine sat at my cottage for the longest time and still looks like new

there is a real easy way to start the Bilke watch one start a cr500 first kick .
My brother had a 125 Elsinore I had a shitty slow TS125 (compared to the CR) and my mate had is dads TM125 which was a really good bike

Vintage CR250's suck to start as the pipe is right next to the kick starter lever so your heal hits it 1/2 the time! overrated by the masses that weren't real motocross riders and had nothing but other Japanese bike for comparison. They were amoung the faster 250's in 73 but within a year 20 pounds heavier than all the Spanish bikes; Bultaco, Montesa, Ossa. were all under 200lb's. Honda undercut their pricing by 35% and bought biased reviews by buying up all the Ad space in the magizines like Dirtbike etc... Ask the Vintage motorcross racers for the truth, the Euro bikes in most cases are much more durable and stock had better suspension in most cases.
