This cover feels like a bridge between the teenage feeling I get from the original and the fond memories I have when looking back on that time. No rose-tinted glasses here, just good times.

Just got the tabs and checked it out. The tuning makes it very easy to play 1979.
It's D#A#DD#A#D#. Now, actually playing it like Antoine is fn ridiculous. Even without the percussion I cannot even come close. So many slap harmonics and tapping its insane.
But the good news is like I said, the tuning itself makes it incredibly easy to play the song 1979, if you're willing to play a simple version. Just following the basic melody laid out in the tabs, this is so FUN!!!!!!!! I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the song. Don't be intimidated by Antoine's skill. This is a song that anyone can play!
Now as far as actually playing antoine's arrangements perfectly, this will take a very long time to master.

Antoine being Antoine, and that's great...
I've always said Antoine has the best right-hand technique of any guitar player. I'd like to think this video settles it. Not just the great percussive effects, and Antoine has always been great at busting out those harp harmonics, but that subtle upward brush across the strings he does several times in the verses to the song (you can see it when the camera closes in on his right hand) once again blows my mind. I also happen to think that nobody gets the balance between melody and technicality quite as perfect as Dufour does (tunes like "To Run in a Dream" and the recent "She is Music" are the best examples of that in my opinion).
Not to even slightly detract from this absolute masterpiece of a percussive fingerstyle arrangement, but this 'technique' is a bit niche. Watch classical or flamenco guys sometime. That's technique that's developed over years and years of crazy repetition.
Thanks for sharing. Got my first real kiss to the original of this song in summer 1998 so this song will always have a special place. Was 13 then, am 35 now, so the nostalgia is strong. Awesome rendition.

One of the best songs from the 90's that carry us to powerful youth energy and hope. Brilliantly executed by a sophisticated mind.. I am so impressed thanks. The pumpkins are vastly under rated they are geniuses though. Like Antoine..

Man nobody rights a cover like Antoine Dufour, Andy McKee's are really good to but I feel Antoine's just connect to a different level, every playable and recreate able part of the song is represented, and executed with the flawless and effortless nature only that of a guitar master could ever achieve, I certainly live vicariously through your music thank Mr. Antoine

I am trying to comprehend what he is doing with his right hand. It seems like he is dancing with it and it sounds super interesting
A lot of percussive stuff mainly. Huge amount of slap harmonics too.
That powerful tone you like is from DI recording you wont hear that kind of sound when playing not plugged in, the harmonic slaps he does causes a very thick low tone behind the low strings if you attack them correctly, you can see this by watching any videos of the same songs he plays unplugged they loose a lot of tone, Antoine is not only a guitar master but a pretty sick sound engineer!
im pretty sure he's also just snapping his nails against the edge of the guitar as he comes down for his slaps/strums to create that 'TAK' snare-like sound

He's hitting his finger on the top cutaway part of the guitar. 'These Moments' is a really good example and visual aid of what he's doing.
it actually makes this kind of playing much much easier because the strumming and fret playing is more like... transitional, repetitive themes that HAVE to be timed very specifically or it sounds messy. it is not as difficult as you would think. and very fun.
