      Anvot that can be done in our heads though, we don't strictly "need" it. It just happens for us. On the other this is a list of needs, something you can give to another, you can't really give philosophy unless you teach it.

    I had a big rat. It was so tame that his "cage" was a huge open tank which he could climbout of any time he wanted, then walk on my desk, and from there even my bed.
    It would not often get into my bed, as from there he could not get back in his tank. He would sometimes at night though when i was sleeping, and it would scare the crap out of me.
    He was also a bit cleptomanic. Stole all my stuff, watches, tv-remotes, socks .
    Pro tip : When you go to the petstore to pick a mouse or rat, be sure to pick the chillest one of the lot.
    If all the buggers are running around , and there is one fattie just chilling like he doesn't even care, THAT"S your guy .

    This video was the catalyst that solidified my decision today to go and buy two beautiful little females. My first mice ever, and I'm 31. I've always owned cats and dogs, but restrictions where i live now only permit small pets, and thanks to this informative, humble and honest video, I've committed for the long run. Today marks exactly 18 months since I lost my dad, the best person in the world. I'm excited to be deserving of a little companionship again. Thank you so much.

    The first mouse I had was a light brown female named Miranda. What struck me here is the fact that mice mostly only tolerate hand petting and I instantly felt very lucky to have had Miranda, whom I would set on my lap while sitting, and just stroke her until she closed her eyes and slept. When I stopped, she would snap her head back and ask for more... She was a beautiful companion, people underestimate how lovely and intelligent mice are.

      I am hearing from more and more people who had mouse raised mice who behaved just like hand raised mice. I have met one mouse so far who was like this. It seems most of these mice were kept singly and had a human who gave them a lot of attention and a lot of freedom. They also had the personality that predisposed them to becoming so trusting and loving. They are mice to be treasured. The only way to guarantee you will get a mouse like this is to hand raise a pinky, but it sure is a lot of work.

    • @ZoeyKoKo
      @ZoeyKoKo 11 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      CreekValleyCritters I have had two mice and one rat that I didn't hand raise, but acted much like your hand raised ones. The mice in question I purchased because they were so ill, and the store I was in would just throw them in the trash when they got bad; so they were an unplanned purchase, and I took them right to a vet. I spent probably a week with each of them (both different times) just holding and hand-feeding since they were so weak, and I kept them just a few inches from my bed until they were 100% better. I think that intense amount of bonding time was what did it. Momo and Moo were soon introduced to other adult mice, but they continued to beg for attention, melt when I pet them, sit on my lap or shoulder while I worked, and even groom me often.
      They are such amazing little creatures. As the two in question got old and their time was approaching, they would restlessly shuffle around their cage until I picked them up to hold, and they'd sleep soundly in my hands or lap. I was there for both of their final moments, and they just seemed so at peace when I was there with them, in stark contrast to the passing of their cagemates.

    I actually started crying, my mouse sonic which was male died supposedly from old age in 2012 i had him for 3 years, well, be died 6 days before his 3rd bday. I remember how quickly sonic got used to me, my mum told me when she was driving home from the pet shop with sonic in the passenger seat in a box she heard a scrapping noise and looked over tothe box to find him sticking his head out of a hole he had chewed! Mum kept on having to push his head back in the way, he was always a cheeky little buggerbut well behaved, he seemed to be attached to me from the first time we met, he was only a small little baby, fluffy and he was white with light and dark tan spots all over. I guess he got use to me quicly. I did spend alot of time with him and i moved twice while i owned him so he had a few long road trips, what a lucky mouse, i wouldn't go anywhere without him. The reason i cried while watching this was because the last few weeks of his life were lonely, i became very busy with highschool study and testing weeks and would only be able to interact with him every 2 days, so when mum came into my room that night, 20th of June 2012 i was so upset, i felt as though i was the one to blame and wouldn't stop crying. Sonic was buried in my backyard. I wish i paid more attention to him on his final days he was truly the best mouse anyone could ask for

      Thank you Tea for your heartfelt share about your pet.
      We had a hand raised Saddleback Rat, named Skunky. he was simply adorable! He went everywhere with us, in my front blouse pocket. At night, during storytime, he would sit on my lap and actually face the storybook we were reading and look at the pictures. He really seemed to understand it. I could tell him to get in his cage at night after books and he would! He was like having the most loving companion for myself and my son anyone could ask for. I can see why you cried when Sonic died. I still sob sometimes over Skunky, because he was so loving and true and so much a sweet presence in our lives.

    The last few minutes actually had me tearing up. I was nowhere near as experienced as you when I got my first mice and rats, but god, that connection you feel for the first time when they look at you and you know they're letting you know how much they love and appreciate you, it's truly a magical experience. When I got mice, I expected something like a hamster where they only tolerate your existence... but mice, if you spend enough time with them, just have this intelligence in their eyes when they look up at you. There is no doubt in my mind that my babies loved me, and knew I loved them right back. As sad as I was (and still get sometimes) that they have passed due to their terribly short lives, I wouldn't trade my days with them for anything in the world.
    Even your educational videos are beautiful and uplifting. Seeing you interact with your pets, it's so easy to see how deeply you care for them, and it's moving beyond words. You are a wonderful person, and your furry family is so lucky to have you!

    Hi, what a wonderful video! I have a dwarf hamster and love her beyond everything, but she got very ill and we took her to the vet. She is now on pain killers and antibiotics (I hate to force her to take the meds twice a day, but I know she needs them) but we not only took her back home, but TWO MICE.
    The mice are albinos, very small (each less than 20 gramms I would guess), sisters, and over 6 months old. They were deserted at the vet's porch, and she (the doc) could no longer take care of them.
    She never took them home, since she has a ton of cats herself (I think 16?) but always kept them at the vet office. They were always on their own, and are very fragile and scared. She trusted me and my husband enough to ask as after all this time to please take them and give them a loving home. So we did, our hearts melted at the sight of them...
    They are home with us for 2 days now and I love them dearly (they still have no names). I think that both are blind, I'm not sure though. Taming will be incredibly hard, since they are "fully grown" and were never really wanted by anyone. I hate to see them being so scared... it breaks my heart. ❤️
    We already ordered a big cage for the girls and are waiting for delivery to give them way more sapcr. We never expected to get mice in the first place and I'm using every free minute to read up on their needs and how to accomodate them. I am very patient and want to make them feel loved and at home and your video gave me a good idea of how to start this... since both mice are already grown-ups I don't know what approach is the best. I'm offering them new/ fresh food, took out the plastic things from their old cage (they would chew it!?) and gave them a big bowl with fresh organic food-mixes, including some of their "normal" food (which is an atrocity! It hurts me to think that they had to feed on these blank, stale pallets for their entire life). Night 1, within half an hour both girls sat in the new bowl, cuddling side by side and ate for a whole hour!! I sat beside them and would talk to them, so they would know I'm there and mean no harm. They are very curious and seemed to love the things I offered right away. I offered my hand with seeds and other treats multiple times, and both seem incredibly tempted but nervous. I always leave the treat, when I remove my hand, and they take it. It's now day 3 (we brought them home the day before yesterday), and they don't like my hand near them, but they won't run away scared but rather walk away somewhat slowely now if I'm too close, and they always check to see for treats I left. I feel like this is progress?
    I'm ranting, so sorry! I'm just overwhelmed at the moment with the new life. We never wanted mice, and now we can't imagine being without them... it's incredible.
    Long story short: I love your video, it gave me a good idea on what to work on next and I'm far from knowing enough about my lovies... thanks for sharing your tips! Much love ❤️

This video was the answer to my question! Thank you, as it's very humane and it keeps the expectations real.

      If you can, buy some baby food cheddar flavored corn puffs from you local grocery or drug store, you can find them in the baby food section, well at least you can here in Canada. Mice just LOVE these and will tame down in no time with these as an incentive. Otherwise just continue to treat him with a lot of kindness, empathy and respect and he will come round, most lone males do, you just have to be patient. If you give him lots of reasons to look forward to you and are quiet and gentle around him, he will learn to trust you.

    Honestly those rules work with almost everything. It isn't just for mice, it works for cats, dogs, hamsters, and many more animals.

    I had a mouse a couple years ago and the little guy warmed right up to me and was letting me pick him up and carry him around from day one. I dont know if this is normal or if i just got a very friendly one. I miss him and this video makes me want to get another one.

    I enjoy your videos very much. I had a pet rat ages ago. She was tame, affectionate, and intelligent. She was potty-trained and friendly to cats. My question to you is what makes you prefer mice?

    • @CreekValleyCritters
      @CreekValleyCritters  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rats are wonderful and much easier to bond with than mice. Mice though are much easier to keep, the small size equals a lot less time spent cage cleaning and more time just enjoying them. Mice are also a much better animal for film making and for being creative in general. They are tiny, magical and exquisitely beautiful little animals. For me they are much better than rats, although for most people rats are a better pet.

    • @mikemoos
      @mikemoos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've had rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils. Mice are the most fun to watch, Gerbils are the most fun to play with, Rats are probably the smartest, and Hamsters are sweet with tubes all around the place. The other rodents tend to chew up tubes made from plastic, in my experience. I had a hamster that would sit on top of his wheel and he would balance it with his body, so he wouldn't slide off. Then he would hold on to the cage bars, and gnaw on them. It was pretty funny. He looked exactly like Hamtaro, and when i say exactly, i mean exactly.

    what dose it feel like when they bite you

    • @CreekValleyCritters
      @CreekValleyCritters  8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Mice rarely bite, usually only when they are really scared. Biting ranges from gentle nibbling (they are just checking you out to see if you are food, there is no ill will and it is easy to train them out of this), some extra territorial little males may attack your hand when you go near their cage, this ranges from feeling like you are being pecked by a very tiny, but very angry little bird to all out bites that draw blood and then the most painful, deep bites that a very scared mouse can give you when you are restraining them.

    I found out what they prefer here is pine nuts. Well I live in France, so no peanut butter or any shit like that. I also give them baguette, camembert, and wine. Just kidding, they don't like camembert.

    • @mikemoos
      @mikemoos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      None of these things are originally French. Good job. I guess the name Camembert is French. Baguettes are Austrian. Croissants too. And wine is a bit older.

    • @wolfgangouille
      @wolfgangouille 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just say that those are the things we find easily in France, not necessarily that we invented them. In France we call croissants and pains au chocolat "vienoiseries" which means "from Vienna", so we know.

    I have had my pet mouse peanut for almost two years. I know that is old for a mouse, but she has not been acting like herself. About three months ago her cage mate, clover, died 😥 I try and play, and interact with her a lot, and she normally has the proper food and cage setup. I said normally because she is in a critter trail cage for now because the glass table we had her regular cage on broke, so for a day or so she is staying in my room in another cage. Is that why she is acting strange? Or is it old age? Or is she sick? Please help!
    Edit: I just made a video for you to see on my channel

    Wonderful to see the valuable ways to develop love with a mouse... and it all applies really to anyone! Thanks for your description on how to treat anyone you truly love and want a relationship with. We had a hand raised Saddleback Rat when our son was young. How sweet he was and so much part of our family. He did everything with us! He truly was like having a tiny family member, one who built love and companionship into our lives every day. And our memory of him is a treasure forever!

I've been thinking of getting another mouse for my birthday and that requires needing the right supplies. If the mouse I get is not friendly this will help me a lot! Thank you, I found this helpful.

    Cashews have a relatively high oxalate content. When eaten in large quantities, this can lead to kidney damage and other chronic health problems. This is the only reason people are often heard saying they are bad. They are not fatty in the least, on the contrary, even in small animals, cashews have healthy 'fats', that actually lower cholesterol. They contain proteins, fibre, and health beneficial plant compounds, that promote a healthy body, and even help with weightless in humans due to the temporary relief in hunger/craving pangs.
