  • Finally, finally finally, we got the fiddle genius Alex Hargreaves into the Artistworks Fiddle School studios for a interview and mini-concert!
Darol and Alex play songs by their old boss David Grisman, plus a Bill Monroe standard and a quite a bit of jazz. Alex has been a Guest Professor at Darol’s Fiddle School more than once, and he’ll be back someday.
Glad I caught him before he officially joined the Billy Strings Experience, because he's gonna be really busy now!
Meanwhile here, Alex's vast range and incredible playing are on display, and he demonstrates a number of great musical ideas and patterns to try on the fiddle. Check out the complete interview and other great interviews, plus over 600 Bluegrass, Celtic, and Jazz fiddle lessons from Beginning to Advanced, at

Alex, you add so much to the already incredible Billy Strings ensemble! Thanks so much for being in the band! Thank you, Darol!

Please teach him your chop and groove. No one does it like you Darol. You're still my favorite fiddle player. Love ya man!

What a treat! I’ve had the honor and great pleasure of meeting and hearing both of you sever times (not together (yet!)) at Ruth and Rob’s house concerts (Ruth is my first cousin) - Alex initially with Grant G (Bridget Kearney on bass!) and you with Mike Marshall and various combos subsequently. The Furies left me shell-shocked and forever smitten by Maeve G. and her otherworldly command of the harp. I know cousin Rob is a HUGE fan of yours - with good reason. I haven’t picked up a bow since my early 20s - played viola half-way into high school and then some part-time electric fiddle riffing in a folk rock band - I was lead guitar and did a bit of 5 string and lap steel as well. I’m planning to get back to it in the near future- ain’t getting any younger and my 2 nephews both kick butt on cello (mostly classical, but the younger one has a pretty cool electric). I’m leaning towards a 5 string (gotta love that C string🤓) and I think I know where to turn for instructional support! (Casey D. and Brittany Haas are both honorary cousins as well!) ¡Hasta la nextime!

I initially misread and thought you’d be playing some EDM. This makes more sense 😂

Beautiful music, that Dawg stuff from my youth has always been my favorite. I have to ask, what’s the deal with Darol’s fiddle? Reminds me of Van Halen’s Frankenstrat. Those F holes are, idk?
