      +Nathan Joyce They (Maybe Thom specifically) said in an interview that it wasn't really a song to them until Colin found the bassline for it. Prior to that it was just more of a sketch.... Colin's basslines, the diversity of Phil's drumming styles and Ed's knack for soundscapes/sound design do not get enough credit, everyone's all like "thom and jonny thom and jonny" and it's bullshit, the 5 of them are vital to what Radiohead is. Er, 6 if you count Nigel which ya really fucking should

      +Nathan Joyce It was actually the first thing on the whole album that stuck with me on the first couple of listens. You could even call it my gateway into this extremely dense record! Colin does not get the credit he deserves as a contemporary rock (and beyond) bassist!

    This has to be one of the most difficult songs to perform live like this. The way Thom's delay plays into itself like that is brilliant. And that's just one part. There are four other ppl doing completely different but equally intricate parts. When you add the horns it's like 6 completely different songs in one. My mind would literally crumble.

    I travelled the oceans for 10 years on these big shells of steel , powered by massive engines. But there are times when we engineers come out from the bowels of the engine room after a watch to see the sunrise in the middle of the Atlantic , it's a feeling that's indescribable.
    But when I hear 'Bloom' from Radiohead's album 'The king of Limbs' , the syncopated polyrhythmic drums, the blaring horns remind me of the hustle and chaos of the engine room, and Thom Yorkes expansive voice that reminds me of the ocean, it's like being back on board again.

      I understand this. Not sure how to put it into words. I was addicted to opiates for about 12 years. I thought once I quit then for good ( which I’m at about 1 year clean now) I’d be happy. But on the contrary, I’m lost, confused and pretty depressed. I’ve spent the last two years trying to rebuild my self esteem by asking myself deep hard questions. Why? But all I find in that question is self blame. Maybe it’s time I give up on why and just move on. Weird how a simple line in a song can really touch your heart.

    I just have to say this. I'm 39, and I've been a crazy Radiohead fan for 20+ years now. Their music has been by my side every step of the way as I transitioned from a girl into a woman, then a mother. The music and lyrics spoke to me because I could relate to so much of it. I had every album, ep, b side, whatever I could find. I started buying their albums on their release date (or downloading as soon as soon as they became available) when OK Computer was released. I've seen them once each concert tour, starting with OK Computer, for a total of six times. They are my heart and I love them.
    So, this is the part I have to say because...well...I'll just say it. In August 2010 my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. I moved in with him and my mother so I could help take care of him until the end. I was very close to my dad my whole life and my worst nightmare was now our reality. So on February 18, 2011, after holding my dad's hand and watching him take his last breath, which I had never seen anyone else do before and haven't since...I needed my Radiohead more than ever. Hospice came right away to take care of things, dress him, and before I knew it, he was gone and I had never felt more empty in my life. At this point I desperately needed to try to give my brain/head/heart/soul some sort of break, if that was at all possible. So I went upstairs to my room to be alone. I was checking my email as I was putting on my headphones and grabbing my ipod when I see this email from a friend of mine asking me what I thought of the new Radiohead album, TKOL. Immediately I went to atease and...confirmed! Numb with grief and disbelief, I allowed this amazing new album to carry me away from my despair, if only for a moment. I was astonished by it's brilliance and beauty, and how it seemed to be written just for me. And then, as it drew to a close, Thom floored me with exactly the message I needed to hear... "If you think this is over then you're wrong". Your music (TKOL in particular) helped me in a way that nothing else could while I was in mourning. And I could never thank you enough.

    To be honest, I often feel like their live versions of several of their more "electric" songs blow the studio versions away because of the live element. It feels more acoustic, less robotic. It seems to have more layers.

    • @ThinWhiteAxe
      @ThinWhiteAxe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The thing is, they're constrained by the number of band members when they play live, so it's a lot harder to get those layers than when they're in the studio with nearly infinite tracks to layer. So it must be some kind of alchemical magic.

      Glad you fall in love with this one but thinking that Bloom just about surfing would be very clichéd and non radioheadish even though lyrics are extremely universal and kind of haiku style which brings many interpretation.

      @RPTW73 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      EndoTM Thanx for your reply. Of course every interpretation has is own POV, but i have this clear picture of a surfer enter the sea near the sunset and this lyrics describe that feeling:
      Open your mouth wide (as you dive into the ocean)
      The universal sigh (it's such a great moment)
      And while the ocean blooms ( = waves breaking)
      It's what keeps me alive
      So why does it still hurt? (when you try to forget something so hard)
      Don't blow your mind with why (you do if you let it go)
      I'm moving out of orbit (because it's so good)
      Turning in somersaults (wipe out's)
      A giant turtle's eyes

      ***** Thanx for your reply. Since i'm a fan, i relistened to all the records and this last one is my favourite...there are some pearls like this one and give up the ghost. I think they found a formula that they can relate to (looking back at all the history, with the ups and downs) and are refining it, specially since In Rainbows. The Basement concerts are really magical and you can feel the vibe between the band. They are doing their own thing and are happily about it. Hope they keep doing it for a long, long time...i'm 42 now and i'm glad i found them...sometimes i just need to listen to this and all is well in the world :) Cheers!

      +Noah Hubbard Me too! Strange: the most emotional Radiohead song (Bloom), is in the worst Radiohead album (The King of Limbs).
      I never count Pablo Honey as their album :p

    This is even better than the album version. One of the things I like about Radiohead is that the guys will play anything to make it sound better and there are no egos too big. "Johnny. What if you played two snare drums throughout this?" and Johnny said "Sure".

    The fact that any of these crazy musicians can just with no ego take a back seat and drum on snares for 5 minutes is incredible

      I go back and forth so much between which version I prefer. I really hope that on this next tour, the band can expand on Thom's looping version he performed in Paris. I'd absolutely love to hear that piece with every band member contributing. That may be the ultimate 'Bloom'
