The bit around 5.30, that was me, . I was (back then) "the one guy in the country who was sad enough to take the recording and flip it around to work out the rubbish he was saying" :)
5:30 Type the time exactly as it appears, that means using a colon : and not a full stop/period . between the minutes and seconds, and the time will automatically convert into a clickable/tappable timestamp after posting that'll go directly to that time in the video when clicked/tapped. @@mehallica666 Yeah Tenet is OK, not as good as inception or Interstellar, but we'll worth a watch. if you havent seen it, theres a version of The Shining online that has the film playing backwards and forwards at the same time, overplayed on each other. all I can say is its very interesting to watch, and the moment when the 2 films merge on the same frame is quite amazing.
I think they should have recorded the music backwards for the show, and then played it in reverse, so the instruments would be backwards but the melody would be forwards.
i actually did this back when we were at amiga club. used up my entire hard drive to capture this episode and reverse it. the thing at about 5:40 was really funny. I think I was that one sad prat
@PureChaosX Whenever I watched this episode, I would think about reversing it just to hear what the reverse-worlders were actually saying. But, as with every other thing I've thought about doing, I couldn't be arsed. Well done for putting in the work that I couldn't be bothered with. The result was utterly hilarious. I had the "Season 1-8 Just the Shows" boxset. It didn't feature any of the Extras from the individual DVDs, so I never discovered this had already been done on the Season 3 DVD.
So i used to know this girl when i was younger, and her brother was quite autistic. a lot of autistic people have a special interest, and they absolutely excel in it in every way. His was Red Dwarf, ask him any question about red dwarf and he would be able to answer it, for example "what happened season 2 episode 3 at 10mins in?". Pretty incredible although somewhat useless

@@KRPTV They actually do make some sense. Like Kryten reading the newspaper, or Dave saying all the bad stuff about Santa Claus, Francis of Asisi and things like that. When you take it as it is, lots of that doesn't really make sense. In the reverse WW2 Hitler didn't liberate Europe. That's not true, when you put it backwards, in fact Europe would chase Hitler back to Austria, instead of him calmly retreating to Austria,, like they claimed, it doesn't work in true opposite direction, the way Kryten (or Dave) said it. You know Santa wouldn't be hated for taking toys from children, it's applying reverse psychology to events, that would work differently otherwise. So Lister and Cat giving that man the tandem bike is not really the opposite of them stealing it from the man.
this is sweet you done this, as they did an official version of this for the old release DVD as a special feature but I don't think they ship with it anymore so not many people get to enjoy this

One of my favourite episodes! I remember thinking about how hard this would of been to edit ( ups to the editors!) . I have seen a video in how they made this before, but this is the first time I actually watched the episode. Thank you ! I miss the old RD, not to fond of X tbh, they lent to hard on rhe nostalgic audience.
I've always loved the clip of Arthur Smith predicting someone would play it backwards. It's also very interesting to hear in some of the bits that are now forward that someone shouts "Clear!" at the 'end' of a scene and in another scene they shout "Action!" at the 'beginning' of a scene. There are other instances where cast and crew say things that would normally be edited out but because they know it will be unintelligible they leave it in and put in subtitles. Great stuff. [EDIT] Forgot to mention: when you hear the cast speaking backwards it sounds remarkably like they're talking German. Rimmer and Kryten sound particularly Teutonic.

How am I pretending I'm the first ever to watch this? I've been told many times now this was on the DVD as an Extra, of which I had no idea about until now. At no point have I said I'm the only person to have done this. There's just ONE other video on TH-cam (9 years ago) of this episode being played backwards, which I also didn't realize. That old video was from the Extras, and was ALREADY reversed. My upload was a normal episode, which I reversed and had to edit the audio because my video editor would cause it to desync. So I AM the first person, at least on TH-cam to actually reverse the video myself.

That's cool. It's incredible how much of the reverse footage from the episode you can understand. It gives you a an idea how it was shot. Still, it must have been a continuity nightmare. Is it me, or does English sound German when it's reversed?
@@PureChaosX I was just musing about this in a response to another comment. It's only watching it this way around that I twigged how the bits that turn out to be nonsensical in both directions belong to scenes where one or more of the Dwarfers are still speaking normally in the same shot. Obviously (well, when you think about it), the only way you can use actual reversed footage yet have characters reacting to it 'forwards' - so we can understand them, and they each other - is if you shoot things separately and edit them together in sequence. But if you want both backwards and forwards elements within a single shot, without any camera cut, then you have to have someone act the scene normally while someone else acts out their bits back-to-front around them. Which means the latter either learning their dialogue phonetically backwards (which would be a hell of a lot of trouble for something no prat is ever going to get hold of and run in reverse...), or else just have them spout some meaningless noises that _sound_ a bit like backwards speech. I'd always dimly wondered why so many bits of the episode blatantly don't hang together as 'true' back-to-front scenes, but never got around to watching it this way until now despite having had the "Backwards: Forwards" extra readily available on my Season 3 DVD for a good 18 years and counting..!
It's interesting to suddenly realise which bits don't work in either direction, isn't it? When you think about it, though, it becomes obvious. Take the scene with the waitress near the start (or the end, here): the actual actions in it never really made sense the right way around. In the normal episode, she comes up to the table and instead of unwiping it dirty she upends a box and literally dumps rubbish onto it, then makes impenetrable sounds and leaves the scene. Flipped around, meanwhile, we see her come up to the table, make what are still impenetrable noises, 'suck' the rubbish off it into a box (instead of, you know, wiping it clean normally), then leave the scene the other way. Whereupon Rimmer and Lister carry on talking to each other _in the same shot_ - and there's your answer💡 It seems they must've wanted to have a few scenes where the main characters are behaving 'forwards' while 'backwards' stuff happens around them in real time, I guess just to add to the overall effect. But of course you can only include legitimately reversed footage either as a standalone set-piece, or else spliced between shots of our fish-out-of-water heroes' reactions. If you want to have the Dwarfers using normal dialogue in the same camera shot as backwards dialogue and actions, though, you'd have to get the supporting cast to learn their lines phonetically backwards for real - or, more pragmatically, merely get them to talk nonsense while making an approximation of performing their actions back-to-front to _seem_ reversed. Which of course is what they did, safe in the knowledge there's only likely to be one prat out there who's ever going to be sad enough to get hold of the footage and reverse it 🙃🤣
@@DJChrisNeon Haha, thanks mate. I'd never stopped to think about it consciously before either, so I was kind of working it out to myself while writing that! But yeah it's pretty obvious once you apply some logic. I do think though it's kind of obscured by the fact the episode has about three different kinds of logic inconsistency going on at once - which makes it hard to unravel _what_ feels 'wrong' at any one time until you do really stop to work it out. Some stuff is weird because, like here, it's people just acting 'backwards' in real time. In other instances, things don't seem to add up because cause and effect (or effect-and-cause, if you will) don't end up the right way around. Like Lister and the Cat unmeeting the guy with the van, him untelling them they can hop in the back, and them then getting an unlift. (Which, to make things even more confusing, includes footage of backwards acting... reversed.) When it's viewed the 'right' way around here, they get the lift and then get offered the lift, which makes no sense. And meanwhile there's the confusion they run into with 'NODNOL' and so on - but a sign saying LONDON should still read LONDON when the timestream flows the other way. Even if you flip the footage (the universe?) laterally, it would end up as mirror writing, not simply with the last letter first. All of which we just let slide because it's funny, of course 😁

Not the 1st time posted on youtube i know i'v seen it before. on youtube. but it was years ago and would be lost in the Archives, that said it is nice to see this again, the "I'm not talking to you" Bit was 1st revealed to the Fans of Red Dwarf in the direct to video (VHS) "Red Dwarf: Smeg Outs" and i Believe it is also found on the DVD that had DVD Extras (it is not on the "Just the shows" Copy) of Season 3. yes i am a big Red Dwarf fan and have been from the 1st Episode of Season 1 when it was first Broadcast. also back when only 5 Season's of the show had been Made i Could Quote every Episode of the show up to that time word for word as was re-watching it.

But I AM the first to have reversed it myself. The original upload was taken from the DVD Extras. It was already reversed.
How am I pretending I'm the first ever to watch this? I've been told many times now this was on the DVD as an Extra, of which I had no idea about until now.
At no point have I said I'm the only person to have done this.
There's just ONE other video on TH-cam (9 years ago) of this episode being played backwards, which I also didn't realize.
That old video was from the Extras, and was ALREADY reversed. My upload was a normal episode, which I reversed and had to edit the audio because my video editor would cause it to desync.
So I AM the first person, at least on TH-cam to actually reverse the video myself.

That's cool. It's incredible how much of the reverse footage from the episode you can understand. It gives you a an idea how it was shot. Still, it must have been a continuity nightmare.

@@PureChaosX I was just musing about this in a response to another comment. It's only watching it this way around that I twigged how the bits that turn out to be nonsensical in both directions belong to scenes where one or more of the Dwarfers are still speaking normally in the same shot.
Obviously (well, when you think about it), the only way you can use actual reversed footage yet have characters reacting to it 'forwards' - so we can understand them, and they each other - is if you shoot things separately and edit them together in sequence. But if you want both backwards and forwards elements within a single shot, without any camera cut, then you have to have someone act the scene normally while someone else acts out their bits back-to-front around them. Which means the latter either learning their dialogue phonetically backwards (which would be a hell of a lot of trouble for something no prat is ever going to get hold of and run in reverse...), or else just have them spout some meaningless noises that _sound_ a bit like backwards speech.
I'd always dimly wondered why so many bits of the episode blatantly don't hang together as 'true' back-to-front scenes, but never got around to watching it this way until now despite having had the "Backwards: Forwards" extra readily available on my Season 3 DVD for a good 18 years and counting..!

I'm curious to know why some of the backwards dialogue works when reversed but others don't.
It's interesting to suddenly realise which bits don't work in either direction, isn't it?
When you think about it, though, it becomes obvious. Take the scene with the waitress near the start (or the end, here): the actual actions in it never really made sense the right way around. In the normal episode, she comes up to the table and instead of unwiping it dirty she upends a box and literally dumps rubbish onto it, then makes impenetrable sounds and leaves the scene. Flipped around, meanwhile, we see her come up to the table, make what are still impenetrable noises, 'suck' the rubbish off it into a box (instead of, you know, wiping it clean normally), then leave the scene the other way. Whereupon Rimmer and Lister carry on talking to each other _in the same shot_ - and there's your answer💡
It seems they must've wanted to have a few scenes where the main characters are behaving 'forwards' while 'backwards' stuff happens around them in real time, I guess just to add to the overall effect.
But of course you can only include legitimately reversed footage either as a standalone set-piece, or else spliced between shots of our fish-out-of-water heroes' reactions.
If you want to have the Dwarfers using normal dialogue in the same camera shot as backwards dialogue and actions, though, you'd have to get the supporting cast to learn their lines phonetically backwards for real - or, more pragmatically, merely get them to talk nonsense while making an approximation of performing their actions back-to-front to _seem_ reversed.
Which of course is what they did, safe in the knowledge there's only likely to be one prat out there who's ever going to be sad enough to get hold of the footage and reverse it 🙃🤣

@@DJChrisNeon Haha, thanks mate. I'd never stopped to think about it consciously before either, so I was kind of working it out to myself while writing that! But yeah it's pretty obvious once you apply some logic.
I do think though it's kind of obscured by the fact the episode has about three different kinds of logic inconsistency going on at once - which makes it hard to unravel _what_ feels 'wrong' at any one time until you do really stop to work it out.
Some stuff is weird because, like here, it's people just acting 'backwards' in real time.
In other instances, things don't seem to add up because cause and effect (or effect-and-cause, if you will) don't end up the right way around. Like Lister and the Cat unmeeting the guy with the van, him untelling them they can hop in the back, and them then getting an unlift. (Which, to make things even more confusing, includes footage of backwards acting... reversed.) When it's viewed the 'right' way around here, they get the lift and then get offered the lift, which makes no sense.
And meanwhile there's the confusion they run into with 'NODNOL' and so on - but a sign saying LONDON should still read LONDON when the timestream flows the other way. Even if you flip the footage (the universe?) laterally, it would end up as mirror writing, not simply with the last letter first.
All of which we just let slide because it's funny, of course 😁

If like me you bought the series/season 3 dvd (back in 2003) you already have seen this. it was on the special features 21 years ago.
I used to own the DVD, but it was the Season 1-8 Just the Shows boxset, which didn't have any DVD Extras. It was literally just the shows.
It was only available on the Season 3 DVD, which I never owned.

Not the 1st time posted on youtube i know i'v seen it before. on youtube. but it was years ago and would be lost in the Archives, that said it is nice to see this again, the "I'm not talking to you" Bit was 1st revealed to the Fans of Red Dwarf in the direct to video (VHS) "Red Dwarf: Smeg Outs" and i Believe it is also found on the DVD that had DVD Extras (it is not on the "Just the shows" Copy) of Season 3.
yes i am a big Red Dwarf fan and have been from the 1st Episode of Season 1 when it was first Broadcast.
also back when only 5 Season's of the show had been Made i Could Quote every Episode of the show up to that time word for word as was re-watching it.
