This is undoubtedly one of the most vocally astonishing live stage performances of any singer to have ever graced popular music. There's no doubt in my mind that if Houston were operatically trained she would have been a complete force to be reckoned with. Furthermore, from listening to this performance alone, I say that she definitely was a full-blown 'Spinto-Soprano' in her early years.
At 3.19 she hits a C6 that is almost operatic in power, solidity and pinpoint accuracy.
At 4.19 she belts and sustains a monumental Ab5.
At 5.35 she then belts and sustains a Db5 for a whole ten seconds without the slightest wavering in pitch and with such clarity also.
It's absolutely masterful singing for a contemporary singer. She was 22 YEARS OLD here also. The Voice of Callas/Price reincarnated as a Pop-Soul vocalist. :D

I was privileged to witness her perform live on stage in Ann Arbor MI. Absolute master of her instrument. I’ve never heard another voice of her timbre and certainly not the utter roundness of her tone. No one could match her. Such a gift she shared with the world.
Nie słyszałam aby inny kontralt zaśpiewał to w ten sposób. Piękne jest wykonanie tego utworu między innymi przez Nathalie Stutzmann, ale piękne to za mało dla Ewy Podleś. Dla niej najważniejszy jest tekst, który śpiewa. W wielu wywiadach to sama mówiła. Jej głos to fenomen to prawda, ale to tylko dar - jak sama wspominała w wywiadach- o który trzeba dbać i go rozwijać. Ewa Podleś kiedyś wyznała "W istocie jestem aktorka". Powiedziała również "Moją największą troską jest, aby śpiewany przeze mnie tekst był właśnie absolutnie zgodny z logiką i artykulacją języka, w którym śpiewam. A tak zwana interpretacja? To już problem wyobraźni i wrażliwości, profesji, no, i talentu..".
May she rests in peace. The loss of this wonderful singer is irredeemable.

Why Ewa Podleś is underestimated. She is an opera star In the best possible way.
Nie chodzi o to, że jest niedoceniana. Ona jest doceniana, ale za mało jej talent jest pokazywany na świecie. Mali ludzie boją się ludzi wyjątkowych takich właśnie jak Ewa Podleś. Ona ma silną osobowość, jest perfekcjonistą i profesjonalistą, a poza tym ma "tą iskrę bożą", budzi to podziw i zazdrość. Przyszła mi na myśl Bernadette Manca Di Nissa (kontralt o innej barwie niż Ewa Podleś), moim zdaniem też jej talent nie został właściwie pokazany w "świecie wielkiej Opery". Wielka Sztuka broni się jednak sama.

Astonishing! Her technique and control, as well as her interpretation is mesmerizing. Her handling of the florid phrasing is rare for a voice that size and as a contralto (true contraltos are a rare enough breed at that)!
I agree with you completely. Ewa Podles has perfect control over her breathing when performing this aria. For me, it was best interpreted by contralto Cara Sposa. This tearful performance is second to none.

Wow, LohengrinO! I discovered Podles’s Rossini on Naxos over 25 years ago and found her truely great - but few friends were enthusiastic. Now thanks to you and TH-cam I have discovered both this and her magnificent Mahler. She is to me one of the 8 or so greatest voices of recording times. Thank you!

You got that right. Ewa Podles is the only legend that is still alive today and we better be praying and thanking God that she's still doing it. I'm in college and let me tell you if I need any tips on how to sing Handel, Ewa is my go to singer. Such an amazing pathos and ethos she sings with this relatively boring and nauseating genre.

Out of curiosity, are there any "Newer" Contralto voices in the world of opera? Also are there any Canary voices(Lol my way of saying females who sing in the stratosphere like Ingeborg hallestein or Erna Sack) ?
The contralto voice is extremely rare, even in popular music. A genuine contralto must have a highly androgynous timbre and according to Podles herself have innate agility and a good extension.
Most 'contraltos' singing today can sing within a contralto tessitura but they are not contraltos.
