CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tevye (Topol) dreams of fabulous wealth.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel.

This was my wife's best movie of all time. I can probably count more than 100 time she watched it in our 42-year marriage. She made me watch it with her a couple times and it grew on me! I wanted to tell my wife that he died yesterday but she already knows because she is up there with him in heaven because she passed away 10 months ago. When I saw this on the news that he died I cried so hard. God bless them both.
My condolences for your loss. Your wife had great taste, which speaks well of you I bet! Praying that you find comfort in the things that brought her joy, until you join her and dance together again
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you're doing all right and you've got some kids to keep you happy and your mind off things. Stay strong, friend.

He brings tears to my eyes. I love this song so much. It conveys so much raw and honest emotion.
Beautiful. i enjoy Love Intense.
baritones rarely get the title song, I sing bass so I only get 4 notes. I get the unspoken gratitude of the public, who get to go home and relive the moments of the show. (76 Trombones!) Let me go or let me stay.

It makes me laugh and cry both
And philosophically too. How the common man sees the wealthy as wise regardless whether the rich man is right or wrong.

@@skullkrusher4418 shut up ur opinion is not valid
I cried when he sat down and sang about if he were a rich man, he would have the time to sit down and pray, and to discuss the Holy books with the learned men 7 hours every day (instead of working in the farm) and calling it the sweetest thing of all. 😭 Also, "Would it spoil some vast eternal plan, if I were a wealthy man?" Chills!
but then he goes back to the material worth. Also, you don't need to be rich to pray sooooo
@@kaiyihuang4045 He doesn’t need to be rich to pray, but if he were rich, and not working on the farm all day, he would have the time to pray
@Kaiyi Huang I think it's fitting for his character. He sings joyously and jokingly about spending his wealth frivolously but cries tears of joy when he talks about religion and building a closer relationship with God through study.
Every gesture, every move, and every facial expression feel so natural and fitting. The way he uses his eyebrows and the dynamics of his voice, and how his eyes fill up with tears at the end...
All I can say is, Mr. Topol, you are a genius! 👍👍💕
I’ve always loved how Tevye talked to God like an old friend. :)
One of the best things about his character.
That's how prayer is supposed to be.
@@trafficking2596 I know, but I mean he does it so out loud and casual
It's a musical done for the audience. Otherwise they'd lock him up for being crazy.
A lot of languages that have a formal and informal pronoun (like French) use the informal pronoun when talking to God or a higher power.
This is one of the greatest moments in cinema. Completely perfect in every way.

What a masterpiece of acting! Out of curiosity, BBC News brought me here today on the sad news of his passing. Although I honestly don't know him before this, I have to say that this is a very difficult act to reproduce. RIP Chaim Topol 💐
Why didn't he win an Oscar? He was amazing as Tevye
Gene Hackman won for playing real-life cop Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in “The French Connection”. It honestly would’ve been a tough call even now.
That same year, Malcolm McDowell wasn’t even nominated for “A Clockwork Orange.” The Academy never gets it 100%.
@@ForceMaximus84 They did the right thing giving it to Hackman
Can agree, Hackman also did deserve the Oscar, but really, not nominating McDowell was a bit criminal.
He was nominated.
Topol defined the role, no one will ever come close
Exacto!
Very true, though I wish I could have heard Sacha Baron Cohen’s rendition of the score to Fiddler, which he used to audition for his part in Sweeney Todd. If there was ever a reboot of this movie, that’s who I’d pick for Tevye
I just came from a video of Zero Mostel singing this, and the commenters said the same thing 😂😂
It's the dynamics he brings to the song... the ebb and flow as he drags and speeds up....he captures the way we daydream

@@marksheiman1538 I recall an interview with Chaim Topol, a devout and modest man from all I've heard, in which he paid tribute to his uncredited costar, the horse. If I remember right, the horse was rescued from a slaughterhouse, and that without training the horse kept pace with him, reacted to him, displayed devotion to him, and that Topol enjoyed visiting with him even after completion of the film.
I don't doubt that, had he won the Oscar, Topol would have credited the horse in his speech as Lee Marvin credited his equine costar in _Cat Ballou._

If I were a rich man lyrics:
[TEVYE]
(spoken)
Oh Lord, you made many, many poor people. I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor, but it's no great honor either. So, what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune?
If I were a rich man
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum
If I were a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work hard
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
If I were a biddy biddy rich
Idle-diddle-didle-didle man
I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen
Right in the middle of the town
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below
There would be one long staircase just going up
And one even longer coming down
And one more leading nowhere, just for show
I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese and ducks
For the town to see and hear
Squawking just as noisly as they can
And each loud *bird noises*
Would land like a trumpet on the ear
As if to say "Here lives a wealthy man"
Oy, If I were a rich man
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum
If I were a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work hard
Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
If I were a biddy biddy rich
Idle-diddle-didle-didle man
I see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife
With a proper double-chin
Supervising meals to her heart's delight
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock
Oy, what a happy mood she's in
Screaming at the servants, day and night
*Screaming*
The most important men in town would come to fawn on me
They would ask me to advise them
Like a Solomon the Wise
"If you please, Reb Tevye..."
"Pardon me, Reb Tevye..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes
Ya-da-dee-da-da, Ya-da-dee-da
And it won't make one bit of difference if I answer right or wrong
When you're rich, they think you really know
Weird he' passed away today and I thought he was gone decade's ago ,tough what a great movie. The best cast.
