Paying extra for a better service? Get the hell out of my establishment! Needless to say, that egalitarian spirit went waaaay out over the 20th century. And yes, this was also a time when the US had one of the cheapest, most efficient and highest quality medical services; before the parasitic "insurance" companies.

In a pub near Llanelli in South Wales around 25 years ago, I got chatting to a very lovely couple of tourists from Idaho. All was going well when Mr. Idaho complains that Welsh place names have too many consonants and that they should remove a few to make it easier for people like him to read them. At first I thought he was joking, but then he's demanding to know WHY so many consonants. Now, we had just been discussing Ireland as they had spent the last few days touring there, so I said: "Didn't you notice how many vowels there were in Irish place names?" Mr. Idaho HAD noticed this, so I explained that Wales and Ireland had both been a part of the British Empire and when the two countries won their independence, the British government imposed a strict ration on vowels for Wales and consonants for Ireland which explained their disproportionate usage in each country. "Oooooh!" said Mrs Idaho, "I KNEW there'd be a reason for it". and Mr. Idaho agreed that, when you explain the history, it makes perfect sense. FFS!🤣

I'm from Finland. I've visited an American friend once and we were planning for her to come visit Finland. She saw me use an ATM and make cash withdrawals in dollars (because I was too lazy to exchange the currency, despite of bank fees). However, she thought she would have to exchange her whole holiday budget beforehand in the US. I told her it's not that serious, she could also do it in Finland with her card or just use the ATM like I did. She told me she can't BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T HAVE EUROS ON HER BANK ACCOUNT. Like the bank account was a physical vault in her bank with her money in it in cash like in Harry Potter. Kinda cute, though.

No, I think it's more than she thought you can only take out in the currencies you have on your account, and probably that setting up a euro account on an American bank would be too complicated. That sounds more like the actual misunderstand. Obviously it exchanges when you take out, but if you don't know it can do that, your reaction might simply be "I can't do it with my card".

I am from Yorkshire in the northern half of England. My accent, though not too strong, is definitely northern. On a visit to Indiana some years ago, I was told by the manager of a hotel that I was staying in that he was Swedish. A bit of a non sequitur, I thought, but attempted to continue with my checking in. Then he asked me which part of Sweden I am from. I explained that I am English, despite my Irish surname. He looked very annoyed and told me I had a Swedish accent - he knew Swedes AND what a Swedish accent sounded like. Furthermore, he had heard "the British accent" many times and I definitely wasn't English. I showed him my British passport, but he still insisted that if I wasn't Swedish, I must, at least, be Norwegian but definitely not British. I told him, "I don't know what to say. I am British. I was born and raised in England and so were my parents. As far as I know my heritage is entirely English and Irish and there is no Swedish or Norwegian blood flowing through my veins" He grunted and I completed my check in. The look he gave me the following day when I checked out told me he still thought he was right nd I was wrong.

I'm American, and I spent a summer in The Netherlands years ago. One of my Dutch friends took me to the Rijksmuseum. I had the humiliating experience of standing in front of Rembrandt's legendary Nachtwacht, or The Night Watch in English, when an American dad told his family it was "not too bad for a little Dutch boy who ran away from the cheese farm!" My Dutch friend let loose with a string of expletives in Dutch. He was clearly furious, and I couldn't blame him. The American's wife looked very apologetic as she maneuvered her family away from us. That was in the late 1970s. The next time I was that embarrassed to be American was when Trump usurped the White House after losing the election by three million votes. He was such an idiot, so vulgar, so abusive, so racist, so vain that he bragged about committing sexual assaults, so useless in a crisis that he tossed paper towels to people who had been in a deadly hurricane... I never thought I would be so ashamed to be American. But I am.

Trump said a lot of the dumbest things I have ever heard from an American. E.g. he said in an interview as president that Austrians „have exploding trees and live in forrest cities“. I am Austrian and think he used very alternative facts here.
A surprising high percentage of Russians btw think most of Europe, including Ukraine, is occupied by the nazis and thats why they have to free Ukraine. Others think USA occupies Europe and forms the „collective west“ (both are propaganda-TV versions). A lot of them still live in the 1940s somehow.

This reminded me of a colleague who attended a public health conference in the US a few years back. She is Maori ( NZ s indigenous people) and was interested in how US first nation people participated in policy development in the US as Maori have guaranteed input into government policy under treaty obligations. The organisers were puzzled until the lightbulb went off in one brain and they took her off and introduced her to a group of Afro Americans who were addressing inner city poverty. A natural mistake, she was brown wasn't she?
Needless to say there was no first nation stream at the conference, nor was she able to find any attendees from that group.
A culture shock indeed and not to the US's credit.

The Australian usage of "c*nt" is the same as in the UK where it's just another generic insult that, while still regarded as the strongest of our swear words, is losing its impact over time. As well as occasionally being thrown as each other by antagonists in an argument, it's quite widely used between friends (men, predominantly) either towards each other in a playful sense, or to refer to other people of whom the speaker disapproves.

I used to work for US news company, so most Americans I know were well travelled, knowledgeable as journalists should.
Once in a blue moon we had a "US import", journalists or editors that had never left the US and got posted in Asia as first overseas work. Hilarious stuffs often followed.
One day at 6 PM, I was at home in Jakarta, on Java island, and a new editor (US import) called me and told me Indonesia's president was going to give press conference in Papua in eastern Indonesia in 2 hours.
He asked me "can you drive there now?"
My mind went blank for a moment as even flights we take at least one stop on a Sulawesi island airport (either Makasar or Manado). 6-10 hour journeys depending on connections.
I kindly told him that the distance between Jakarta in western Indonesia to Jayapura is 3790 kilometers, 2350 miles, and there are thousands of islands between Jakarta on the island of Java and Jayapura on the Island of Papua in eastern Indonesia. Distance wise It's almost New York to LA. But on different islands.
"So no, no way in heavens I could get there in 2 hours even flying"
He went silent and hang up mumbling oh .. oh

In the exact same town I tried to respond politely to the question if I was impressed with the infrastructure, which in a certain way I really was.
But then again, in Boston the guy at the gas station asked my opinion about how the upcoming increase of the German VAT would impact the German domestic markets and if it would further increase the German foreign trade balance.

All of you who have a chance to read this, ask yourself do you really think all of the "youtubers" from Russia, all of the "influencers" or any of those "sportsmans" woke up one day and all together decided to start war against Ukraine? or PUTIN did that? What about the thousands of Russians who was arested for saying " ON WAR " or all of those mix families "half Russian half Ukraine"? WAKE UP PLEASE!!! And if any of you wanna know the reason why PUTIN attacked Ukraine. The reason is that Ukraine try to join NATO, but "Country in open conflict with any other country cannot join NATO" that's why PUTIN attacking Ukraine time to time. If Ukraine will join NATO, any country of the NATO coalition army will be able to make Army Base in Ukraine and Putin cannot allow to let that happen, because he don't want any of those army close to border with Russia. The same situation had place in Georgia (the country not the USA state), there's still open conflict for about 10 square miles terrain, and because of that Georgia cannot join the NATO too. Saying "Russia attacted Ukraine" is like say "all muslims are terrorist" WAKE UP PLEASE!!!

Its different with dutch provinces since there arent that many but you learn both the amount(excluding the overseas islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, Sint Maarten and Sint Eustasius because you learn those just by name and that there are 6) and name(From North to South: Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Noord Holland, Flevoland, Overijssel, Gelderland, Utrecht, Zuid Holland, Zeeland, Noord Brabant and Limburg) and if you know them by name you can count them(12). How is that working for Americans with sleepy Joe in charge?
How are those "poor people" doing, they faring any better than "educated white people"? Or are all those poor people in jungle? How about the children his son had stacks of videos of that now "mysteriously" disappeared? Or the children's lips that Biden was just trying so hard to kiss because that's totally a normal thing to do. Or them African children he found oh so exciting. (This is all Joe Biden said -No one called him out for his racist remarks against black people or how creepy he is with children. I watched a video of Biden and felt sick to my stomach. I was convinced the man I was seeing on the video was a p3d0. This was years before I knew it was even Biden.)
You're having a laugh if you think Biden cares about Americans. Don't you know? If you ain't black unless you vote him (Yes, he said that). Cause black people can't think for themselves according to him. Wasn't Biden the one who pushed for black people to be put in jail for minor drug offenses back in the 80s or something with Bill Clinton? Something to be considered as a black mark on American History? Kamala Harris had her pockets in that too. They sure love helping black people - go to jail.
How about Hillary Clinton who is an American Traitor! She literally committed an act of treason, she also had people killed! And then tried to cover it up by destroying laptops and shredding documents. She was in court over it (sadly the court hearings have been wiped from youtube and google but not before I saw a video of her condescending mouth smirking at the senator who questioning her and Hillary dodging the question and not giving a straight answer like a professional lying politician, because she knew that she wasn't going to get in trouble). Bet you didn't know that, huh? Or that Hillary was part of the Russian scandal, but the media pushed it and make it out that it was Trump, because it was going to hurt Hillary's presidential campaign (Which is why Trump said "Not Yet", when in referencing Hillary going to jail.)
I know all this as an outsider. We have so much more information about American politics and the way American media works than it's own people (and if you're someone outside of America, you should know better). Stop looking at propaganda news outlets that are brought by the government and lie to you and the American people. This not in defense of Trump (because republicans are just as crappy when they had their time with Bush and every a lot of other things, they are just as bad as democrats -oh and surprise surprise, America is not a democratic society so how does that work as a democratic party?) , it's in the defense of thinking that Biden is looking out for Americans. Politicians in America (and frankly, the world) have stopped caring about it's people long ago. The sooner American's realise that, the sooner Americans can find that they all lie, Americans can see the lies. And they'll wake up to the BS in that country. It's a sickness. It's a cult.

    • @madzec

C**t , in Australia means C**t , the same as it does everywhere else . It's a euphemism for vagina , however , for an Australian , it's all about context . If somebody tells an outrageous joke , for example , one that might be considered extreme , you might call him a "sick c**t" . An Australian would consider this to be a commentary on the joke , rather than the joke teller .
Generally speaking , Australians learn very early on , to not take commentary personally . It's considered a weakness in Australia to be offended by words .
