Happy fact: Most of the Goodwill's are privately ran locally and alot of the runner's buy their stuff at Walmart when it's discounted or on give away and the resell it for high profit.
also if stuff doesnt sell they will just throw it in the dumpster instead of giving it away. im not religious but i still try to give my old stuff to my local salvation army instead since they actually give it away if no one wants to pay for it...
I'm in a small town in the middle of nowhere in Texas, and I'm moving soon to a more active city. One of the things i can't wait for is to go by myself to a goodwill or thrift store and just stay there for hours just looking.
@@lylajoyreynolds6103 it's complicated, but some big reasons are that they claim to help disabled people by hiring them, but they can (and do) pay them less than minimum wage due to a loophole in labor laws that still exists. They also strongly oppose minimum wage ever increasing. On top of that, the program they have to actually hire disabled people has been tremendously reduced over the years. They dump TONS of their waste items that aren't bought in developing countries which actively harms their existing textile industries, and they get millions of dollars for it. And despite Goodwill legally being a nonprofit, their executives literally make 6 figures...while paying disabled people less than minimum wage and claiming to help them. Not every store is the same. Some stores treat their employees well and give them bonuses and raises. Some stores are awful and have resulted in actual deaths of disabled employees due to unsafe working conditions. There's a lot more stuff that can't be summarized in a comment, so I recommend reading into it :( donate to small local thrift stores and shop there instead of you can!
Lmaooo, TH-cam ate my long reply comment. ;-; They pay disabled employees below minimum wage, ship tons of unsold items to developing countries to dump, and have shrunk their program to actually employ disabled people by quite a bit over the years
I'm seriously enjoying Mayas goodwill phase I'm all here for it.

I had this discussion a few days ago with someone not believing me that they just buy in new old stock sometimes. They just refused to believe me. 😅

As a former Goodwill employee, supporting Goodwill is unfortunately not good :/ but at the very least thrifting is!

They overcharge by a lot, barely donate the profits and instead of giving away the stuff no one buys they just throw it away ☠️☹️
They also treat their employees like shit
