- For this video, I will provide a little history and description of the set as well as disassemble, clean, and reassemble the locomotive and fianlly a test run!!!! Well, maybe, you have to stay to the end to see if it runs or not!!! Enjoy!
PS: I owe this purchase entirely to Ron from Classic Model Trains as it was after watching one of his videos that I sat down and investigated the Goodwill sales and found this set. So Thanks Ron!! So check Ron's train adventures out over at his youtube page, Classic Model Trains.

I also want to note a couple of corrections to my statements in the video. I incorrectly stated Athearn produced for Lionel in 1957 when it was in 1958. The Hobbyline connection to Lionel was based on Hoobyline facing some finacial difficulties and Lionel purchasing tooling for a few locos and cars around that time. The second major error in my comments is the statement that the caboose and cars where also Hobbyline. This is incorrect. The caboose is Athearn parts but painted and lettered by Lionel. This should be pretty clear if you compare the details of this caboose with an Athearn and then with a Hobbyline as you see them on the TCA mfr's webpage. Ahh the challenges of attempting to post solid info lol. Thanks and enjoy!
Cool little set 👍
Super. My railroad still operates a Lionel GP-9 that I bought new many decades ago, along with a gondola car, hopper car, and caboose, all proudly proclaiming "BLT. BY LIONEL." I got lucky and managed to get the Athearn offering, which has a superb GE five pole motor, all wheel enclosed (Operates great outside.) gear drive and electrical pickup, cast metal chassis, and diode directional lighting. It runs great, and along with one or two other locomotives, is usually found pushing the snowplow or pulling a passenger train. I also have one band drive Athearn F-7 still operating, modified with cassette player drive bands, that runs fantastic. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
Thanks for sharing actually a Great find... Have Big Fun 😀 and enjoy running those trains... "HappyRails"....GMan
Thanks for watching!!
Sure wasn't expecting that mess inside the box with as carefully they had wrapped it up. Nice find.
You know how it is Dave lol At least nothing seemed to have gotten broken!!
Everyone loves trains 🚂
When You are a Model Railroader collecting Model Trains No matter What scale is Awsome if your Passionate for trains Anything Goes.
Wow I never knew Lionel made a HO scale set.
Yes, from 1957 to 1963. They started by contracting with Rivarossi and Athearn before creating and buying their own tooling.
Thank You for sharing such a Wounderful collectable! Time well spent.
Thank you for watching!! My goal is to present more cool trains as we go forward!
OMG...seeing that train set takes me back to my late 1950's childhood, I had a few pieces of Lionel HO stuff but I never got a whole set like that. I had mainly Atlas and Mantua HO stuff. It is all long gone.
Thanks for watching and glad it stired some good memories for you! The stuff is definitely still out there lurking waiting to be saved for another generation!
Seen your post and headed over here to see what’s going on. Nice set, great piece of history. Runs at a scale speed of 287.674 MPH I see ;-). Them darn goodwill people sure can pack things poorly. Make I guy wonder if they ship dishes , china, and glassware the same way. Thanks so much for the shout outs. It’s good that you showed yourself in your video. A lot of guys makin videos you never see who they are. Loved the display on your back wall. Great vid!!
Thank you Ron! I figured you'd get a kick out of it and you have a fine channel that is growing quickly! I'm workin on improving the video skillz here Thanks for the tips!
P.S. forgot to mention I have ya up thumb and a new Sub. Good luck on your TH-cam journey. It’s a fun row to hoe.
@@classicmodeltrains Thank you brother! I've subbed up on your channel as well. Loved the Varney and early Athearn videos especially.
Takes me back to the early 60's, I received a similar set for Christmas. Wish I could remember what happened to it.
Thanks for watching!
Wow!
In 1960 my younger brother received a Lionel HO scale similar set, with the husky locomotive in a Rock Island paint scheme.
Wish a "Wilson Line" box car, a log car and a Rock Island caboose.
Thanks for watching! You must have had fun playing with that set!
Thank you for sharing the Lionel items. Excellent shots up close of equipment much appreciated. I love the retro world of early HO scale. Keep up the good work. Once again, thanks. :-)
Thank you for the kind words!
I grew up in Paducah, Ky, home of a massive AEC Plant that enriched uranium! Atomic Energy Corp. or Company! This past Spring we found a complete Lionel HO set with the gold color GP9 that celebrated the 50th Anniversary of GM locomotives. It has never been out of the box! Enjoyed your video and will sub! Happy Holidays!
Thanks for watching and the sub! I bet that is a neat set you have too!
Looks like they took great care in protecting the box, and no care whatsoever to protect what was in the box???
Neat stuff I like to take a quick walk through my local gw. I like how lionel used the o scale rocket with the ho set. Keep having fun!
Thank you for watching!
The power pack looks like the tyco set from the seventy’s only it was blue and HO scale
It is the late 60's Blue AHM one, pretty much the same as the Tyco. I suspect some supplier made all of those set transformers. The Lionel one in the set had a bad cord so I took the short cut on the transformer.
I was not aware that Lionel sold HO. I only knew of the O gage.
They only sold ho from 1957 until the middle 60's, actually I think about the same timeframe both Marx and American Flyer dabbled in ho.
Still have my Lionel # 1611 set made to commemorate Alaska Statehood (with a not-so-mint condition box)
Thanks for watching!
Piko Still makes that Diesel switcher as a German Loco, complete with a Rubber band drive and it's only $20.00!
I've got my eye out for some Piko
I started collecting Lionel HO about a year ago, when I was more or less handed (for free) an in complete 1961 set, the 5757. No set box, but the original boxes for everything except the loco. Missing one car, the track, and 0101 transformer. Luckily still had the (boxed) 0900 unloading platform. The 0366 milk car is missing the doors but has all 8 original milk cans.
Some of your facts are right, some are a little off, from what I've been able to research
Lionel first contracted with Rivarossi in 1957, for HO. The deal fell through, and they switched to having Athearn produce trains for them. Lionel had some sort of creative control I believe, but pretty much anything Lionel sold, Athearn also sold in their line. An extremely tiny Lionel logo was stamped onto Lionel items to distinguish them.
Starting in 1959, Lionel was making HO themselves. They purchased tooling from the recently defunct HObbyline, to kick-start the line, but designed all-new drives for everything. They copied a few Athearn products too, such as the GP9 and the Hustler- Lionel decided to call theirs the Husky. Athearn continued to provide a couple items for Lionel through to 1960, such as passenger cars and autos for the auto loader. The drive mechanisms changed over time, with major changes taking place in 1960, 1963, 1964-1965, and 1966.
As far as your set, the box and the condition of the 0056 are really remarkable.. they look fantastic! Too bad about the individual boxes.
You're very lucky, your loco also has the original 'name plate' on the bottom, these are very fragile and most are missing them.
Be careful, the Alnico-type field magnets are weakened by taking the motor apart- it kills the motor torque and causes overheating. I replace the Alnico magnets in my Lionel HO motors with neodymium magnets after servicing, to bring them back up to 'full strength'.
Something neat about your loco is the nylon worm gears- most of the Lionel huskies used brass worm gears. I'm not sure if either type runs better than the other.
The caboose in this set is one of a number of transitional cabooses- the chassis and shell are Athearn, but Lionel decorated the shell, as well as supplying the trucks. I don't remember how many road names you can find in this variation, but I think they're all somewhat hard to find. Most of Lionel's HO cabooses only have one coupler, and no handrails, break wheels, ladder, or smoke stack. A few of the 'de-luxe' models came with all the details, plus illumination.
Of the various models I own, my favorite runners include the 0636 pacific (with smoke), 0598 GP7, and 0642 2-4-2. The latter two use rubber drive belts, and the secret to making them run well is in finding a belt that is just the right size to grip the drive pulleys, but not create too much friction and strain on the drive.
I've been slowly working on publishing videos of my various Lionel HO models in operation, since there seems to be very little in the way of Lionel HO videos online right now.
Thanks for the comments, you are definitely correct and I realized I had mistated the dates about the time I published the video lol Your comments about the caboose make sense a swell, I originally thought it was Athearn but was told that it was indeed Hobbyline. I started to question that "fact" once I saw a few pics of real hobbyline cabooses with the center cupola as well as again knowing all the traits of the Athearn caboose. I will see how I can add some comments in the video to correct those details as I don't like them to be incorrectly stated and I made the mistake of letting them get out. I've got a Marx F3 set on the way that I plan on attempting a video on but man information on Marx ho is scarce!!!! Again thanks for watching and thanks for the well comments and the details they are much appreciated!
Great upload. I subbed.
Thank you!
the switcher shell is Lionel tooling. the navy and rio grande was 1958 not 57. I have this set also with all of the boxes, nice set
Thanks Mike, Yes knew the years but mistated and did not realize it till after I posted the video. My mistake! lol. It is a great looking set!
I have HO scale GP 18 by lifelike proto 2000 brand new in the box bought dirt cheap in 1993 unused nice locos
The helicopter Is a Bell Model 47! Or close ,anyway!
Well not a 47! Later model! I'm sure someone will know.
I was just looking and I found one it looks a lot like, the Bell Ranger. take a look and see what you think!
@@myjunkisstuffgarage967 I googled the Ranger and found the 47J Ranger was introduced in 1956! The MASH helicopter was the earlier 47. I earned my private pilot license in 1967 but was never able to afford much after that. I spent a year in Vietnam across the street from the biggest Army Heliport in country! Hotel 1 in Saigon! Saw every type imaginable!
@@Suncast45 That is cool, I bet you have some stories! From one vet to another, thanks for your service!
@@myjunkisstuffgarage967 And thank you for your service also! My older brother's model railroad turned into a real RR. The Paducah and Louisville RR. Story for another time!
Marx guy here, I`m enjoying your layout, but turn up the sound?

Thanks for watching!
As a related note, the deal of the year, or last year or so was from ShopGoodWill. It was in one original set box but it was actually 4 sets and one extra engine minus the track and transformer of the Marx HO set similar to the one you bought here. Little yard diesel, green or blue, one box car one gondola and one caboose. All in workable condition, to just fine condition. all of the engine needed oil and oil in a spot that i could only get to by removing the top. The old plastic had me worried but they all opened up without and cracking. The motor system is the same basic motor truck they use on their larger diesel set, and it's top shell just snapped on over the truck brake tanks.
Thanks for watching! I'd like to get a Marx ho set!
You keep reporting it wrong as Goodwill Auctions……. it is GW finds……big difference….. one is a Charity
You are correct, Hopefully, I will get it right next time! Thanks for watching!
It was a good video but the volumn was too low. We could barely hear you talk.
Thank you for watching! I will correct the volume in the future. Thanks for that feedback.
Caveat Emptor: (Let the buyer beware).
It is what it is lol
(The/your audio is low) but I loved the content.
