How long a train can I run? How many cars will this engine pull? O gauge train layout
มุมมอง 2.8Kปีที่แล้ว
Let's see how many cars we can pull!! The first 19 are modern Atlas and MTH Premier woodside reefer cars, some with Kadee couplers. The rest are prewar Lionel with a bunch of prewar Kit built wood reefers using Lionel trucks and couplers. It all runs great on my layout with some 38" diameter American Flyer curved track. Back and forth S curves and a long train!! Also good running of my 1995/6 e...

Just a quick run through showing the details of a few really old O scale freight cars. Two brass cars from the early importer Max Gray and one prewar kit built car from Parmele & Sturges. These would have all been two rail or outside third rail from the dawn model railroading. These are the next step a modeler would take once the toy like Lionel trains of the 1930's to 1950's weren't enough.

Figuring out the plan, the scope, what the heck am I doing!! We're going to hand lay two loops of O scale track on a Prewar Lionel tinplate model train layout and we're going to try and blend it all together. Oh and when I say O scale, I mean they stuff that was available in 1935 ish.

Short video showing the steps I used to hand lay a four foot test track using old rusty American Flyer S gauge rail, wood ties, and ho track spikes. I used light gray stain on the ties along with some black in the center to simulate oil and coal staining and Rustoleum Cammo Brown on the sides of the rails. I skipped using tie plates.

This is a quick intro to may challenge of aquiring a few more vintage big O scale locomotives that require very wide radius curves as well as scale like track. It's not enough to just throw down some 96" dia Menards tinplate curves. The trains have to actually be able to run on them lol
Vintage Lionel Prewar 226E train running Hi Rail on the O gauge model layout
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
The term Hi-Rail can be traced all the way back to pre WWII days when early modelers would install Lionel or other toy train trucks and couplers on their scale kit built models and run them on dressed up tinplate track or better yet early Gargraves track. Here is a quick intro to a few early mfr's cars and loco as well as several examples of built up rolling stock set up to run on normal Lionel...

We had a large Trix Twin layout in the 1940's. We started with 2 0-4-0 locos and ended with over 6.. We had 3 transformers and 6 controllers. To run so many locos, the layout was split into sections by sawing through the outer rails. Points were remotely operated and we had about 18 plus 2 crossings. The biggest problem was deposits from the plastic rolling stock wheels. A bit of dirt would operate the reversing control and halt the loco.

Yes they sometimes stuck an Eveready In the tender to power the headlight and that button was the on/off for the light. Good catch. As far as where, you almost have to seek them out. find some on ebay, some at auctions, and train shows. Even got a few off FB from people seem my posts and saying hey I got this are you interested. You can make small holes in the road bed for the spring contacts and carve out some rubber in front of the last tie and they will fit nicely. That is what I did and rolling stock will not dislodge them if they bump them as long as they aren't hit at high speeds. Hope it helps.

I've got that Tyco Spirit of '76 C-430 with the Presidential seal which is becoming a rare item. Tyco got into trouble for using the official seal of the President of the US so further production runs left off that part of the seal. I also have it in a ten wheeler steam engine with matching caboose. I think I've also got one of the Spirit of '76 freight cars with the "Minute Men" on the side. There are two other Spirit of '76 freight cars--"Paul Rever's Ride" and "Washington crossing the Delaware". My C-430 is missing the handrails and I tried to make some but failed miserably. Cheers from eastern TN

You got a good deal on those ole engines. The fun part is getting them to run. The best improvement you can make to those old open frame (Pittman) motors is to change the magnets to neodymium (rare earth) magnets. I did that to all my Pittman motors and it made a HUGE difference in current draw and performance. Now they will "creep" around the tracks. Second improvement is to change the incandescent headlight to an LED. Third improvement is to change the couplers to Kadee. And yes the Mantua Pacific came with a working incandescent headlight. Yours is just missing. Quartering 6 drivers is a whole heap easier than trying to quarter 8 drivers. While replacing the magnet on one of my Mantua Pacific's I broke the motor part that holds the magnet. Had to order another from fleaBay. I did repair the old motor with some JB Weld epoxy so now I have a spare. I stripped and repainted all 3 of my Mantua Pacific's and added Central of Georgia decals since I used to live in Georgia. Cheers from an old modeler in eastern TN

I used a green scotchbite pad on the rails, then wiped them down with alcohol on a rag. The track was more dirty grungy than rusty so that probably helped it clean up easily. The roadbed I removed and soaked and then scrubbed with easyoff and then cleaned with dish soap, that was a bit more work honestly.

Nice cars/set. I was cringing when you used the steel wool. I just was given a 1967 Model Motoring set from a relative and they used steel wool on the track. Going through the 6 cars they were loaded up with metal steel wool shards on the magnets/bodies. I tried one TJet 500 car before cleaning it up and it looked like it was in flames on the track it was sparking so badly.......I finally got the old track set up and it did not disappoint. I cleaned the entire track with WD-40 and it is not slick at all. The Viper guys suggest using the WD-40 and I was skeptical. But the track looks like new now and the cars run fine on it. The 3 level cardboard mountain is a riot, it's like Pikes Peek........

Super. My railroad still operates a Lionel GP-9 that I bought new many decades ago, along with a gondola car, hopper car, and caboose, all proudly proclaiming "BLT. BY LIONEL." I got lucky and managed to get the Athearn offering, which has a superb GE five pole motor, all wheel enclosed (Operates great outside.) gear drive and electrical pickup, cast metal chassis, and diode directional lighting. It runs great, and along with one or two other locomotives, is usually found pushing the snowplow or pulling a passenger train. I also have one band drive Athearn F-7 still operating, modified with cassette player drive bands, that runs fantastic. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
