    Don’t forget to loosen or even remove the anti-rattle bolt when actually towing. Otherwise that point load will eventually strip the threads and render the bolt useless. Some brands have them on the top corner to mitigate this I think. Great mod! Your shins gon’ learn today.

    • @benahhx
      @benahhx ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Checked for this comment first. The bolt is only for anti-rattle when not towing. Have seen the welded nut snapped off due to leaving it in.

      "anti-rattle bolt" - I have a tow-bar on my recent car and I now know I need to look for an anti-rattle, thing - I had been thinking nasty shims or something.
      And, also about the lock-in load-pin : I drilled mine to take a padlock - wowee was it some VERY serious steel! - even with three sizes of bits, a drill-press and some WD40 it was a serious slog to drill it.

    Adding a tow bar can be a good thing. Since most cars are front heavy, then adding a bit of weight at the rear just means getting closer to 50:50 weight distribution 😎

    • @DG_427
      @DG_427 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Also if you can't drift with your car, you can drift with your trailer. 😎

    • @mediocreman2
      @mediocreman2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes a few pounds is good, but speaking from experience if you actually try to make a car that wasn't 50/50 from the factory into a 50/50 car, you will have major problems. The car is designed to work with the weight balance it has. When you add a lot of weight on the rear, you can actually increase the pendulum potential and it can be dangerous. But yeah a tow bar is no problem!

    Here these parts need to have TUV approval. You see them on more that 50% of all the cars. Hatchbacks, wagons, crossovers SUVs. Almost everything and anything. I used to tow two trackday motorcycles on a trailer behind my Renault Clio and now behind my Volvo V60.
    The factory could also install electronic fold away towbars on more and more new cars.
    So very common in the Netherlands.

    Tow bars are a fairly common accessory for scca autocross cars here in the states. you can stay in stock class while adding a bit of stiffness to the chassis. With that being said, i was shocked at the price! A good tow bar here in the states is usually only $150-300 USD depending on the vehicle.

      In Italy a factory tow bar costs in the realms of 1000€. Even more sometimes. It must be retractable as you are not allowed to just drive around with the tow hitch out. Also the installation needs to be certified and put in the registrations papers .

      In Europe and Australia, towing with your vehicle is much more heavily regulated than in the United States, this is where most of the price difference comes from. The tow bar has to be officially certifed by an institution that's somewhat similar to OSHA or NRTL in the United States. This will obviously make the part more expensive, but it will also ensure that even the least expensive parts you pick up in a store will be of good quality and will actually be safe to use. In Europe, the tow bar also has to be installed by a certified mechanic if there is any welding involved, plus in some countries (Germany for example) the installation of such an accessory has to be noted in your vehicle's registration since you're making modifications to the crash structure by replacing or modifying the rear bumper support. If you get a tow bar installed by a mechanic, you will usually pay around 1200-1700€ depending on the type of car you have, but that price will include the parts, the labor to install it, as well as the relevant entry in your vehicle's registration papers so you can actually legally drive around and tow trailers with it.

      Probably not too difficult, especially as all the rear light circuit is next to it for the trailer. You'd probably only need to wire a secondary circuit into the brake and ground leads to an LED array. It would be a pain to remove before inserting the hitch every time though

It's not rated for towing but it can handle a bike rack with zero problems. It has since made bike transportation easier and saves my cars interior from dirt and potential leaking brake cylinders. Needed an impact driver to remove the factory tow hook, a reciprocating saw to make a hole bigger to get hardware into the frame, and a torque wrench to get everything torqued to spec. Trying to get 60 ft-lbs of torque on your back in a driveway is not easy. Have also been pretty happy with my Kuat Sherpa bike carrier.

    The company I work for makes a hitch that hides under the bumper, it's called a Stealth hitch. If I ever have a car on bags I will definitely get a stealth hitch so I can slam it and not drag hitch. I machine the hitch 'center' that the ball mount locks into. Free advertising for B&W and I think it's a badass product.
    Hitches in general do add chassis stiffness, which is always good.

    One thing I do is I usually put a heavier rated hitch on then what is recommended for the vehicle size - this isn't so I can tell more but because the standard truck / ute hitch receiver diameter has much more aftermarket support for things like bike racks etc - plus there's more bearing surface so whatever you plug into it will rattle around a lot less!

    As a dude that has had a towbar fitted to his last 3 vehicles there's a huge benefit that hasn't been mentioned.
    Towbars make the rear end of your vehicle significantly more robust, I've been rear ended quite hard with one fitted and beyond some minor damage to the plastic bumper the rear of my char held up really well indeed.
    The front of the other dudes car was absolutely fucked... No brainer

    By the way gents, NSW HWP have friggin Predator vision for D shackles without the rated, yellow pin. I've even heard of people being threatened with tickets for having unrated shackles on their tow bar that aren't even in use. Have a good one!

    Just a little tip for piece of mind, when i fitted my tow bar i locktighted the bolts (even though they had locking washers/ lock nuts) and then put a paint marker on the bolts so i can check them at a glance. It may seem over the top but they can come loose otherwise (ask me how i know :( ).

    If you've got a sunroof then the bracket weight is a moot point. Running w/o the ball still gives a good recovery point. Its saved me. The receiver was about the only thing sticking out of the snow when I spun a sedan going 140k's after hitting a wall of it just past an intersection.

  • @lancer1993

    I got a tow-bar for my Lancer sedan, to tow a box trailer and since I don't use it most of the time I made up a fog light to go in its place when I unbolt the hitch, and yes the fog light is wired to the front factory ones so when they are on it all works!

    Think about it this way: Yes it's added weight, but it's also balances weight distribution by adding weight to the rear to help offset the front weight from the engine.

    I never had a car with a tow ball on it! until a few years back" When I bought a yellow Mazda SP20 wagon with the tow ball, The first thing I bought was a $700 4,1 tinny with a clapped out trailer, That I had the pleasure of rebuilding to the weapon it is today, boating is life! LOL

  • @wngimageanddesign9546

    Ah ha! Yes, this is what I had done to my Honda Accord sedan. Just to attach a more convenient bike rack. And it was the best mod ever. No more straps, trunk access, superior security. Better visibility and aerodynamics. With the 200 lbs tongue weight, I can also attach a small storage box. Or tow a small trailer too. Suddenly shopping at IKEA or the lumber yard wasn't a hassle anymore.
    But oh man is it expensive in Australia! I think I paid under $200 for my new aftermarket tow hitch.
