Fantastic guide! Couple extra tips for min-maxing your embark: - cave spider silk thread/cloth is cheaper than the pig tail stuff you get by default, so you can swap it out for easy points - the raw ingredients for most items are cheaper than the item, so get rid of the buckets, crutches etc. and bring more wood. The one exception are the starting tools and weapons so you can leap into action but that weaponsmith you specced can make higher quality items for your future armies
I absolutely loved the swift transition to explaining how to setup military when an enemy suddenly started attacking. The humor and conciseness of the video is just perfect. It's a great change of pace from a lot of other very meticulously detailed and slow paced tutorials where everything is scripted. It makes this video much more entertaining!
Also in hindsight, maybe Adil made an animal trap because he wants to do something about the snapping turtle problem? Or maybe it's because he was trapped like an animal under the constructed bridge? Lots to ponder~
I've accrued like over a thousand hours in dorf fort since I was a wee lad in 2011 and I still love watching new player guides. Everyone focuses on different things and really reflects the creator's play style. This one's engaging, informative and pretty damn funny
Thanks so much! Yeah, I definitely have a different style, but I hope it was engaging for people who might enjoy something different from what's currently on YT.
Bought the game a week ago, this video was a godsend to set up my fortress good and proper. Granted there's video tutorials that are basically an 8-week correspondence course that offer more in-depth information, but this is sufficient enough to get the ball rolling the right way without taking too much time to watch.
Thanks so much!!! Yeah with such a detailed game I can't cover EVERYTHING, but I mostly wanted to show the info I wanted to know when I was new to the game - I'm glad you liked it!!
Wow great work on the guide! I just started learning DF and want to say your guide is one of the best I’ve come across. Good pace and very concise with just the right touch of comedy. Hope you keep it up as I’m sure your channel will grow.
Thanks so much!!! I'm working on another follow-up right now, I have a couple videos since this one but they haven't hit even half as well unfortunately, gonna try doing a DF storytelling vid and keep my fingers crossed

thank you so much!!! I tried to edit it as much as possible to get it as quick and fast pace to what I would've wanted to listen to as a beginner myself, I'm really glad you got value from it
Thank you for making this guide. I wanted to get into DF for a while, but most of the tutorials are way too complicated, but you managed to balance important information, ease of understanding and humor. I feel way more confident on my way to become a true dwarf.
As a beginner, I can say this video was awesome and useful to me ! It is very comprehensive yet fairly easy to understand. Thus far, I've been learning from the wiki quickstart guide but I wish I had stumbled across your channel before... Oh and the voice, it's simply relaxing :D Thanks for making this guide !

@@Bandaia You're actually the first to say that! Thanks for your feedback, i often watch youtube on mute so i appreciate it too! Thanks for subscribing I'll keep pushing more content!!
As someone who was distracted by the subtitles, I do agree that size made them easy to read and pace didn't require me to slow down or rewind even though I definitely prefer more than a few words be up at a time and less rapid bouncy effects.
Great tutorial. Great narration and the format is well put together. Exactly what this sort of game needs as a practical tutorial after you got the theory.
@@VonGalactic While the speed is fine (one has pause after all), what is a bit difficult when trying to follow along as a total beginner, is that your voiceover is often several seconds behind what you are showing in the screen. Jumping back a bit helps often, and thankfully your voice is very pleasing so the repetition isn't terrible :) It's cool and enthusiastic quick-guide, still just some input in case you'll consider doing more guides in the future to clean-up the sync in editing a bit more.
@@mx-hx Thanks for the feedback! I'm still really REALLY new to making tutorials so it's all been a learning experience for me. I'm taking your feedback into account for future videos though!!
Good video. Honestly, though I'm still learning I have an obsession with making a "floor" for every job specialization. There's a craftsdwarf floor, a smelting/smithing floor, often the sleeping quarters and tavern are either on the same floor or just above and below eachother. Problem is this delays my essentials because my craftsdwarfs are waiting a month for all of it to be excavated by just 2 guys before they even get their workshops up and running! I should probably start doing what you suggest right at the start
I LOVE THAT IDEA! definately consider a floor to have temp things first, you can always trash them later, I know how you feel the game can be slow af till you have a higher population to dig everything out. My problem is I end up dolling up temporary floors and get too attached to them xD
Whether on the same or different floors it still takes time. Consider starting with smaller areas even if scattered across floors. You can use the blueprint mode to delay parts of your building or just put those parts as a lower dig priority so it happens when higher priorities are finished. A temporary/scrappable floor layout is a fine approach too. Just like your first stockpile, you can decide if it is a general catch all that you slowly remove things from as you get specialized areas/uses or if you just replace it. Its even faster if some things are done on the surface (of environment isn't too risky or you accept such a challenge). You can also start the temporary area as a separate baby fort and go bigger from a separate area later. Though its not something I normally see done, you could even keep it designed for a fallback in case of a catastrophe that is barely survived or also have it become a full+redundant fort so you can use it as a fallback in case of a threat getting past critical checkpoints or other severe issues arise. I think redundancy still has some limitations like if you don't have enough dwarves to drive some parts of it (yet), are missing key pieces (extra anvil), and being inexperienced I don't know how easily you can fully force dwarves from one set of zones to the next for all of their tasks.
Good general 'what to do' tutorial even if it misses some of the basics of user interface as could be beneficial to a new player or someone upgrading from legacy dwarf fortress to this interface. Overall seemed well paced for a condensed guide and mostly stayed on topic. Thank you for making this tutorial For some constructive feedback... The captions burned into the video can be a bit distracting both because of its bouncing appearance and short few word layout; since a game tutorial should probably have more focus be on the game rather than added content of chat/narration/etc. that happens outside of the game I'd say it is best not to distract the viewer off of the game in front of them. Similarly, thanks for not adding an avatar or other stream overlays over the game during educational content; it was in the intro but the game education wasn't yet taking place. I didn't compare to youtube's autogenerated translations but if my past experience with it is anything then yours are far superior as youtube's autogenerated captions are usually full of amusing and confusing errors. You also appear to generally have things on screen long enough to be read by those needing captions but at 1 row that changes every few words it leaves little time to look away without very fast reading speeds. Size is legible even with my bad eyes, but it'll be hard to fit text on screen at more than a few words without losing a lot of the screen at that size so its a tradeoff. Placing the captions permanently into the video often causes a quality reduction for the rest of the video image due to how sharp changing edges work in most video codecs; the amount of impact varies depending on the content that was covered but is usually worse unless it covered very fast changing content. You can work around that by making a fuzzy/blended/gradient edge instead of sharp edge on the content. For those who don't need it, they can't turn off the distraction if it is burned into the video. If they speak a different language then the distracting captions aren't helping them. If they turn on captions from future autotranslations or other sources while viewed in any media player, your larger captions that are easy to read may look very odd+distracting coming through and around other overlayed captions. For these reasons, I usually prefer captions be provided as a separate caption stream that can be properly toggled on/off. Separate captions also make content more easily searchable when available separately as its normally stored as some form of text file; good for finding things when their location in 1+ videos is forgotten without having to play through the media. You also spoke clearly so I didn't feel a need to make up for audio with the captions for what I remember.
Thanks so much! I also have a water/aquifer/plumbing guide on the channel and I'm working right now on a longform DF video about one of my latest fortresses, I hope you watch it when it is ready!!
Don't know why (or actually I do), but I love watching these guides- even after 1000~ hours of the game. I always seem to learn something / refresh on some forgotten topic; and also fun to see how other people enjoy the game. I would love to see more 💯 (or maybe even some DF stories? 😎)
Funny you mention it, I am currently working on a DF story video for the next one 👀 (I didn't realise how hard these are to make though so its taking flippin' ages)
When preparing carefully, the game seems very generous with the amount of points you can use on adding items to your caravan. I must have added like 200 plump helmet seeds to my caravan. In hindsight, I’m betting they wanted me to swap out for more sturdier tools, or hell, even actual metal as opposed to copper.
Bought the game 2 days ago and this guide is amazing, singlehandedly made a unplayable mess enjoyable, now I'm just waiting for my wealth to build up so I can get migrants and I'll be on my way
Subscribed. I like your style of play, and you're great at explaining stuff quickly. I'm definitely gonna adjust my start to include a lot of these steps. I'm pretty new to all this, but I realize I need to increase my difficulty by picking a more dangerous starting location
I'm really glad you liked it! Remember even if you pick a harder zone and it might not work out, you'll probably learn along the way and tackle it differently each time :)
I've been trying to play for a while, with no success, always running out of booze turns out the tip to turn of cooking with pump and booze was the trick I needed I just found fun with a wrongly placed water pump :P, so next fort we go
This has helped me a lot but one thing has been bugging me. How tf did you build up a floor? I keep trying an construction says cant build cos the upper floor is hidden. Edit: Nvm, I figured out how to use ramps.
"Comprehensive" + "Dwarf Fortress" = 30 minutes? This is going to be hilarious. Edit: not bad, but far from "comprehensive" or "ultimate". Poor newbies that think they know how to handle aquifers and ignore the heavy aquifer warning. For a start.
I meaaaan i'm trying to invite people into the game without an intimidating info dump 3 hour video showing every single thing at your disposal, after this vid you'll at least be set up with understanding of how to tackle future dilemmas rather than having no core understanding of how to play the game. Things like heavy aquifers or haunted biomes don't need me to visually show it due to them being self explanatory as a more aggressive version of what is shown here, with my guide you can pretty reliably continue playing for the next 100 hours or till the fort explodes.
There's an enormous distance between a guide and a Let's Play. Why would you not even attempt to explain anything you're pointing out, or anything about the underlying mechanics at all?
Because it's a game, so I go into the details a beginner might need while omitting the exhaustive explanation that'd throw them into deeper confusion. Try to keep up!
off topic comment..... at 0:42 when you mentioned to subscribe the subscribe button lit up all colorful. Weird and cool little feature. is this something you intentionally did?
@@VonGalacticjust having your explanation of how plump helmets work and explaining wall smoothing has given me a much clearer idea of progression. Thank you!
The random generation systems and various simulations that Dwarf Fortress runs get all the credit for being the big signature features of the game's engine but honestly the work order system is phenomenal, incredibly in depth and as much as it might seem intimidating, these days it's pretty easy to use. The game would be completely unmanageable after a few hours of playtime per fort without it, and it allows you to be in depth and organized so that everything runs like a complex clock or relaxed and spontaneous, just putting in work orders as the need for them arises, and both methods are at the very least viable.
von i dont have the brain for all those information but i might buy this game because of you one day what did you do to me ?! (also metalfool sound like a fail band name sorry xd)
Great guide to help me to jump into the game. The prep faze was a nightmare to follow tho. You were just flicking back and forth between windows too quickly. Also if im trying to set up the profile for future games, then i wanna get it right. I wish youd just stated how many of each item you were adding. Rather than a vague "some" of each item. Dont mean to nit pick but it was just frustrating. I know you're being quick so the video isnt an hour or longer. However having to pause and rewind every 5 seconds through that section was tedious. A brief popup of a list with all the items you added and their quantities at the end would have been much easier to follow.
Sorry about that, i had to cut a few corners so it stays sharp and informative, I don't think you should use this video how you've been using it really, moreso to give you an idea of what you might want to bring rather than needing to copy a profile - because realistically I go through some stuff and give my reasoning, but its not law nor is it perfectly optimised in that sense. In the future I'll definitely add a pop-up list at the end to recap, thanks for the suggestion!!
@VonGalactic it's more that I have zero context for anything. So atm I can't really make my own decisions. Having a template to start from and then tweak to my own preferences as my understanding of the game grows is kinda what I was hoping for. Regardless, your guide is helpful. I rarely give unsolicited criticism (it often just feels rude) so i appreciate you taking what i said onboard :)
@@VonGalactic I believe in ya man, I aim to do some YT soon too and when I sees a small channel doing a great job I says something! 😊 Also I'm curious if bite-sized dwarf fortress TH-cam shorts would play well with the algo-- whether that be tips or lil stories idk
cant wait, i thought DFHack is a mod that s suppose to give me something akin to "creative mode" but from me digging its more complicated and i have yet to find the will to go deep on how tit works and how to operate the thing

turns out the tip to turn of cooking with pump and booze was the trick I needed
I just found fun with a wrongly placed water pump :P, so next fort we go
Nooooo keep going!! It's fun to work around the horrors of this game xD
@@VonGalactic I kinda drowned all the 62 dwarfs on the fort on that one :(, could more arrive if I just waited?
This has helped me a lot but one thing has been bugging me. How tf did you build up a floor? I keep trying an construction says cant build cos the upper floor is hidden.
Edit: Nvm, I figured out how to use ramps.
Amazing guide! Very helpful for new players as someone that is interested in this game this is super helpful and easy to follow!! thank you ♥
Thank you my queen
Is that a metal cap that looks like a Stahlhelm in the thumbnail?
Could be, maybe that Dwarf craftsman is German specifically
At 3:14 "Mind The Gap" London style :)
I lived in London for a loooong time I just had to xD
Wish I had this video when I started earlier this year.
I'm glad you got value from it! I'll keep pushing more content xD
Very nice. Wantet to start again and get a small overview
I'm glad I could help give a bit of advice on how to start!
@@VonGalactic ok for the future please put information like the dwarf stats at the start in a list. It is hard to follow because of the fast pacing
@@Brennmeister No worries! Sorry it was so fast, I honestly don't think it matters toooooo much, purely cause you'll be getting more Dwarves later. but below is what I did for these guys:-
Dwarf 1: Mining 5 / Stonecraft 5
Dwarf 2: Masonry 5 / Forge Armor 5
Dwarf 3: Woodcutting 5 / Carpentry 5
Dwarf 4: Mining 5 / Forge Weapon 5
Dwarf 5: Negotiation 1 / Appraisal 3 / Organization 3 / Record Keeping 3
Dwarf 6: Axedwarf 5 / Leadership 5
Dwarf 7: Brewing 5 / Herbalism 5
This vod is poggers! Did I say that right?
Mmmmnyessss, you did precious....
This video was great. Stuff it kasey
Cats? Cats?! I have never knowingly embarked with a cat. I will get them with migrants anyway, it is inevitable
I embark with a cat irl so it's force of habit.
@VonGalactic fair enough xD. Memes aside catsplosion hasn't been a thing for many many years so there's no real reason to avoid them anymore
Awesome video

i may be a bit skittle brained but this video was relatively to follow along with
made my heart grow 2 times as big and my beard 2 inches longer
Hopefully height 2 inches shorter too
9:45 eating raw PH gives you a seed back, cooking a PH destroys the seed.
Makes sense! that's probably why i keep seeing seeds on chairs huh...
Nice Job, Nice Voice
Thanks so much
Now this is dwarf maxing
Dwarfpilled sigmas doin tricks in the mine 2k24
off topic comment.....
at 0:42 when you mentioned to subscribe the subscribe button lit up all colorful. Weird and cool little feature. is this something you intentionally did?
That is TH-cam's AI listening to everything that a video says. And learning. The robots are taking over.
Statue customization !! :)
video idea, recreate 1to1 replica of the "lost level" (level 6) tomb of the dwarven king from "dungeon of the mad mage"
AMAZING idea!!!! I'll look into it
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO DWARF FORTRESS where i have not learned anything signifcant
watch it again but next time make sure to have your mother push your cot closer to the screen 😄
@@VonGalactic let me make guides to game i suck at
Idk what video you watched, but I learned a shit ton, my guy

No part two? I was thinking wellls and mine carts and rail roads and lava….:(
Theres a part 2 explaining water on my channel!!!
Ive tried to play the game several times but never really "got" it. This is very helpful to get me on track
Hell yeah! Let me know if you need any more help I'm always happy to give advice
@@VonGalacticjust having your explanation of how plump helmets work and explaining wall smoothing has given me a much clearer idea of progression. Thank you!
Instructions unclear, clown got in fortress
Sorry that's just me
good vid good editing too
thanks!!! I'm gonna drop the hard subs though next time, I think I overdid it a bit (someone complained) xD
@@VonGalactic looked great to me as a new creator myself I look up to you guys for inspiration and help
Wait, mind goblin??
Don't make me say it
Oh, didn't know cats killed shit.
Was wondering why my fortress had so many remains of small creatures all over it😂
Yeah and what's cute is that if they have an owner they will drop the vermin remains with their Dwarf xD so realistic
Totally agree! To be honest I love work orders mostly because it allows the Dwarfs to micro while I can focus on the macro
They're a good way to practice "if x then y" programming logic
Probably the best starting DF tutorial I ever seen on TH-cam!
You're too kind! Thank you for enjoying it, I hope to make even better videos in the future!!
I’ve been getting a lot of these guides in my recommended even though I don’t own the game. I think TH-cam is trying to tell me something…
I mean... it's a great game...
@@VonGalactic yeah I decided to pick up the steam version tonight, it looks like a good time.
von i dont have the brain for all those information but i might buy this game because of you one day what did you do to me ?! (also metalfool sound like a fail band name sorry xd)
Hell yeah! it's a load of fun with endless content honestly
this is a great video if, like me, you've dabbled but don't have a consistent start.
I'm glad you liked it!!!
Good guide! You have a great natural cadence and voice for YT, I agree with another commenter in that!
Thanks so much! Comments like yours really spur me on to keep trying with this whole TH-cam thing, thanks for your kindness honestly :)
@@VonGalactic I believe in ya man, I aim to do some YT soon too and when I sees a small channel doing a great job I says something! 😊
Also I'm curious if bite-sized dwarf fortress TH-cam shorts would play well with the algo-- whether that be tips or lil stories idk

essential guide to df. even for veterans
You're too kind! I tried to make sure it was filled with everything I wanted to know as a beginner myself :)
how about a vid about DFHack?
Good idea!!!!! I might do that soon(ish)!
cant wait, i thought DFHack is a mod that s suppose to give me something akin to "creative mode" but from me digging its more complicated and i have yet to find the will to go deep on how tit works and how to operate the thing
That was fast and intense! I hope I can wrap my mind around it all!
You got this!
Intro looking good!
Finally I will be able to play the game instead of perma resetting bases.
Yeah keep it up! Imo the most fun is fighting through a difficult base so you get better at beating the odds
@@VonGalactic I guess I just get frustrate bc some times I lose track of what I m doing I once made a farm but then for some reason they where only picking half the crops and then decided to move the farm to lower levels but I didn't know how to do it and then gone to the wiki to find some help but it felt to confusing and hard to follow
