  • PHAD travels to the big city once again in search of weird and wonderful automotive case studies!
    Before we go to Staten Island to visit Keith DeFazio of New Level Auto, another TH-cam subscriber called me over to Brooklyn, NY to look at a 2002 Nissan Maxima with misfire codes...
    Enjoy!
    Ivan
    This is Part 1 form the 4-day trip...many more to come :)

    Excellent diagnose. the 3.0L v6 older engine I think is better engine I think. I have one 205k miles, 19 years old, just now started having issues, misfire , it was #4 coil and changed all 6 plugs also. now its the trans P0744. been working thru that. Did ATF Service with Valvoline Synthetic ATF and Lucus its been alot better going to change the ATF again after 5K miles to get more of the old ATF out, since its black again already. been doing good I had to clear the code 4-5 time now its been 500 miles since last time I cleared code and hasn't come back. suspect it was sticky TCC solenoid and shift solenoid(s) . That sounds like a broken valve spring or lifters issue

      Auto Fix Pal don't need misfire counters when you can fit a broken second hand engine to speed your diagnosis.

    Excellent video. Ivan. I learned the hard way in my younger drive ability days. Before I blame misfires on fuel or ignition. I check relative comp with trigger with amp clamp. FLS in tailpipe,intake vacuum,crankcase pressure, both running and cranking. One test may find something that another test may miss. Wishing you and Evans all the best

      Mark Ferraro After the comment "another fault introduced during the repair process" I was belly laughing for a good half hour, then I read your comment and broke down again. Before starting the engine I thought this was a serious video. Clearly some sort of joke. Once the engine started I was clear what was wrong. Good funny video. Love. Just hope it isn't really customer that had to put up with the initial garage incompetence. WOW WTF well funny. Some divs about.

  • @joe2mercs
    @joe2mercs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Eric O at SMA did a loss of compression study on a Honda V6 recently, just one cylinder was bad (from memory cylinder 4, front on passenger side). It might have been a help to the customer to determine whether the compression loss was due to valve seating issues or worn piston rings but in the absence of a smoke machine or compressed air you did a great diagnosis Ivan. At least the customer now knows that all the engine ancillaries work.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Definitely not worn piston rings...that compression hump was missing entirely. Plus all the valve clatter was a big clue ;)

    I think they make a laminate that will stick on the screen that cuts glare. I remember seeing it being sold for desk/laptop computers. Can't speak personally to how well it works, but from the pics I saw of it, it looked like it worked pretty good. Easy and cheap enough solution I guess.
    I feel bad for Evans - that garage took him for a ride. Mechanics like that give all of us a bad rap.

Nissan has a bad reputation for their timing chains going out. The timing chain causes a lot of random misfires.

    Most probably the used engine was originally replaced because it had overheated.

    that was cringing to watch, those prior repairs were brutal! I really hope that customer will get their money back or get their original engine back... every step of the way that person was hit with incompetence and a lack of knowledge. someone suggested a throttle body for a misfire? a shop throws an engine at it without verifying compression! and let's it go without doing the same, AND with that sound! holy crap!! that's the kind of work that gives Indy shops a bad rep!!!

    After trying regular tunup (spark plug, coils), they should try valves adjustment if it dosent has automatic jydrolic adjuster, after that check timing, xheck VVT if it has one.

    • @arciefan
      @arciefan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The recommendation I would give is consider getting your own shop. Does not have to be some modern building inside the city. The shop I go to is built outside the man's house and very successfull because of their honesty and good work reputation. He is approaching retirement age and still working some but mostly his son runs it. Most times I go there , I see a half dozen vehicles there for service. Just my opinion, but would love to see you in a controlled environment as the owner / operator. Most people don't mind paying for good service, others want something for nothing or close to it. Just my opinion, and talk to Eric O and see what his advice would be.

    Hi Ivan
    I enjoyed the video too bad about the swapped engine.
    As far as the glare issue I have a smoked plexiglass screen I cut from a damaged boat windshield, I glued a couple of velcro tabs to the top of my laptop and the edge of the sheet.
    When i sit outside I attach the plexiglass screen to the edge of the laptop and prop it up with a plastic prop stick. Works great as a shade and best of all did not cost an arm and a leg.
    Hope this helps and you can find something suitable.

    If the "repairs", changed engine, injectors, coils, throttle body, etc... does not fix the problem, how can the customer be obligated to pay for all of that since it didn't fix the problem?
    Doesn't the repair shop have to pay for it?

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question...I think the customer did a lot of the repair work himself. The repair shops just "guessed" at the problem and told him what it "might" be. So in this case I don't blame the shops at all since they didn't perform the work!

    Why didn't they change the gearbox? Won't that cause that misfire? Also sometime rear bench seats can have a coronal effect causing inferometry and misfires can be produce via smelly pooh pooh reason. I you attach the scope positive to the cars antenna and scope negative to a dowsing rod held in the left hand while wearing protective hearing defenders you should be able to find all the faults making millions

    Why is he even doing a compression teat when he know the misfire is not engine related. Why don't he figure out the cause of the misfire which I think is fuel delivery issue since it is P0300. A cylinder specific on nissan cars is usually faulty PCM, how do I know? because I rebuild car computers and nissan vehicles are notorious for bad ignition driver IC and also although not related to misfire they are also notorious for bad idle control solenoid driver IC which shorts out due to overloading cause by stuck solenoid

    Honestly, these Snap-On Scanners seem like a huge rip-off to me. I don't know how in the world one would engineer a professional tool for in-fiel use which has a glare display. And the User Interface is an absolute mess too, you have to go through a thousand menues to test all injectors it seems. That thing is not worth more than one of the chinese Autel things.
    Actually I think a Picoscope and an Autel is better equipment than that thing...
    Nevertheless, a great case study as usual Ivan!

      The Verus does shine in saving time and saving data...a true all-in-one tool.

      true, but the price seems ridiculous for what 'simple' mistakes have been made when designing that thing. I mean a bright non-glare display is no magic these days, so I don't get why they would use such a bad unit in there.
      And when I remember how many times Eric O's Verus broke...for 10-15k you should be able to expect something better.

      Oh mine is a 2008 model and I got it for a grand lol...definitely wouldn't buy a brand new one! Those are way too pricey!

      Ok, 1k for a used one is probably a good deal. How much do they want for updates?

    No parts can fix the motor except a rebuild or another motor. Motor is busted
