    A good review, you've cut through so much of the nonsense and triviality that too many people focus on during lens reviews. I've got the G2 on a Nikon body and my experience so far is exactly what you've described.

      Hi, thanks for watching. It is very easy to get caught up in the hype for some lenses and just as easily to let a few negative comments steer you away from an essentially good one. I have found there are very few that I would steer clear of, most just need the user to spend the time using it to get the best from it. All the best!👍

      Its a great choice but if you are on a budget and don't need as much reach the Sigma 100-400 is also a great lens.👍

      Hi Samiul, yes it would. I have also used the sigma 150-600 contemporary which I think is cheaper and also the Tamron 150-600 Mk1. The build quality on both these lenses is less good than the G2 but they are still capable lenses. Will all these things there are going to be compromises. I now shoot with the Sony 200-600 as I now shoot only Sony but although it matches the G2 and image quality is stunning I miss the zoom locks on the G2. I would also say that I buy most of my lenses used form companies such as MPB which can also reduce cost.👍

    It may not have been a Review Scott but I thought you did an awesome job of explaining what you ACTUALLY need to know from a Wildlife Photographers perspective! I've got the Canon 100-400, Plus two primes 300 & 600, but they are heavy bits of kit! But I'm seriously considering the Tamron 150-600 G2, looked at Sigma but weight issues, and the whole point is a lightweight stalking outfit! the IS looks pretty good, sharp, nice focus and quiet.... ish.. You are right about the sweet spot, many lens differ for the same model! Crazy! But shooting with the Tamron at F7.1 looks pretty dam sharp! I'm liking it and at a price that doesn't totally break the bank! Love the Little Owl image on the Roof, and the Deer shots are awesome... Well done my friend, keep them coming it will certainly help those who are starting out in Wildlife Photography, and nice to see from all us Amateurs, lol. Regards R :-)

      Thanks Richard, one thing I did forget to mention is that the autofocus on the sigma 100-400 was very noisy. Not a problem for most people but it was terrible when I was trying to film with it. The Tamron on the other hand is very quiet. I also went for the Tamron over the Sigma sport because at 400mm the Tamron is F5.6 while the Sigma is F6.3. Sometimes in the early morning while stalking wildlife that extra stop can be useful. Really struck lucky with the deer shots how often does that sublime light briefly break through as well as having a willing subject!! Thanks for watching mate.👍

    Spot on Scott. I think I’ll be getting that lens eventually for my D850 with the F mount. Weight is an issue for me so this would definitely work better for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and great pics 👍🙏

      Cheers Adrian, I think zooms have come on a huge amount over the last few years and if you spend enough time finding that sweet spot they are very capable of matching the big primes. I used to think that with a more reasonably priced zoom you had to work a little bit harder to get the same result as a big prime but I am beginning to think work harder should be replaced with differently. I don't think you would be disappointed! 👍

    Hi Scott, great review video, I recently came back to dslr photography with a 2000d and kit lenses, 18-55 and 70-300, but was looking at this lens for the extra focal length, would this lens be ok for my setup.

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Kevin, I can't see why not. I have used the Sigma 100-400, Tamron 150-600 (original version) and the Tamron 150-600 G2. All have taken some excellent images. The G2 only won out from the sigma because it gave extra reach and the original Tamron as the build quality was much better. I also think that the quality control on the original Tamron was a bit patchy. I think I got lucky with a very good copy. Thanks for watching.👍

    Hi Scott, great video! Considering the much lower price point of the sigma 150-600mm C, was the choice to go for the Tamron based on weight for you? Apologies if this is something you have mentioned in the past.

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel, for me I had the funds to go for the Tamron 150-600 G2 or the Sigma 150-600 sport and although, as I say in the video build quality has never been an issue for me it always give you that little bit of extra confidence to shoot a little bit longer in that downpour etc. If my funds didn't allow it then I would have certainly been happy to get the contemporary👍

    Hi Scott nice to see an honest forthright reviewish your bang on with the comments regarding the other lenses, what you have to remember is that we amateurs don't earn a living from photography we do it for the love of it, we haven't got thousands to spend on the best lenses or cameras, your spot on when you say get what's best for you, but at the same time its nice to here from a seasoned ( hope that's the right word ) or professional if you want that a particular lens takes a good image and if you can take one with it then there's no reason why we can't. Regards the weight I was in the category were my Nikon 200-500mm was to heavy sold it and bought a 300mm prime light as a feather, but I do miss that extra reach and looks like I will have to grin and bear the weight issue to get that image that's just to far for the 300mm. Thanks again for the reviewish stay safe mate. 👍

    • @scotttilleyphotography

      Thanks Graeme, it really is a rule of diminishing returns above a certain price point and there are so many other areas within wildlife photography where you can improve your percentages at no cost other than putting the work and research in. I had some stunning results with my Canon 50d and 300mm f4 with and without the 1.4 converter. So much so it was on my list again this time. Just work on those other areas and get out as much as you can and you should have some great successes with that set up👍

    Lovely review
    I use canon 6D mark II and I’ve been looking for a while now to get a good telephoto lens, completely confused between the Canon 100-400 markII and the Tamron 150-600 G2
    It’s still hard to decide between the extra reach, good reviews of the Tamron and the excellent reputation of sharpness and fast focus of the canon lens... which is more expensive too...
    What camera are you using with the Tamron in this video please?
    And do you think that I should get it for the affordability and extra reach for my 6d markii without regretting not waiting longer to get the less reach and guaranteed performance canon lens?
    Thanks

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Hamada, I'm using a Canon 80D in this video. I think the Tamron is a great choice as with the 6Dii being a full frame camera you will have a 600mm lens. I have also had the Canon 100-400 Mk2. It is also a fantastic lens but the main issue for me was it's actually about 370mm not the full 400mm. There are a number of reviews which show this when its up against something like the Canon 400mm F5.6 prime its not actually a true 400mm. Having said that one thing that would sway me towards the Canon is if you see yourself doing some close up macro photography. I think the Canon close focus is under a metre and allows you to be almost on par with a true macro lens. Hope that helps! Scott👍

      @MicroFrog2011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you recommend the Tamron G2 ? I’m leaning more to it for the price and range, at the same time I don’t anna feel disappointed with the sharpness.

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had no worries with Sharpness with the Tamron. I was just advising that if you also wanted something to work at closer range and do some macro photography the Canon gives you that option.

    Hi Scott fantastic video really enjoyed it , hope you don’t mind me asking I know you got the sigma 100-400 I’m thinking of getting the tamron 100-400 just wondering what made you get the sigma to the tamron, I’m getting different reviews on them I want the lens mainly for wildlife photography.

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martyn, I think it was just availability at the time to be honest and I think the Tamron was newer and slkightly more expensive. My comments still stand that either would be a great lens however, for me if I was making the choice now I may go for the Tamron and that is only because I think it captures slightly more light than the Sigma.👍

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, I suspect that every lens will be slightly different. I would only worry about it if the lens is so far out that you cannot adjust it. If you have managed to adjust to get sharp images then I would be happy with that. Mine needed a slight adjustment by the way👍

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Christine, what autofocus settings are you using now? One thing I have seen during my workshops is clients having multiple autofocus points active. I don't use this because when taking images of wildlife it is often moving and autofocus can refocus in on background or foreground objects as well as parts of the animal that may not be required to be in sharp focus. I always aim for the eye of the animal bird to be in focus and use single point (the central one) and continuous autofocus. Hope this helps, if not please feel free to ask some more. Scott👍

    • @christinenantz9775
      @christinenantz9775 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, thanks for your reply. I’m a back button focus person and I have tried 9 point and one point center focus. Always continuous shooting. Very new to this hefty lens as I’m a portrait and wedding photographer. There is a bird sanctuary in my back yard and so many birds and such. So I bought this lens to get even closer than tamron 70-200 with 2 x extender. Maybe I just need more hands on

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Christine, you seem to be doing all the right things. In this case I would first make sure there is nothing wrong with the lens. Sometimes they can back or front focus so even if you hit focus on the eye of a subject the lens can be set up to focus slightly forward or slightly behind that point. If you look up back focusing lenses on youtube you will see some videos on how to check and adjust for it. I would initially set my camera/ lens up on a sturdy tripod and then hit focus on an object and a good few yards away. Use the 2 second timer and take a shot. If the point you aimed at is in sharp focus then you know it may be a technique issue which you will get the more you use it. Hope this helps. Scott👍
