This is going to help me so much on the Voltron Black Paladin armor set I just started building. And thanks for the Pidge helmet build tutorial you just put up, it helped me make Shiron's helmet in one day! You are the man and everyone who asks me how I learned to foamsmith I say "Evil Ted videos will save your life."
Evil Ted- I don't normally comment on videos but I have to say, you make THE BEST tutorials for this kind of thing. Your videos are thorough and informative, but the big thing that separates you from others is the overall quality of your finished pieces. I've been successfully costuming for a long time in leather, plastic, foam and chainmail- you name it... but your videos have helped me "level up" in a major way. Thanks for sharing your techniques, they are a cut above the rest.
I'm doing my very first foam costume for my son's Halloween costume. I made a cardboard Bad Cop last year and my friend suggested using foam for this years Lex Luthor armor costume. Thank you for posting these videos and I will support you by buying from your links.
Every one of your videos just blows me away. That body armor was movie quality. And I like how your tutorials require little power tool usage because not everyone has access to such tools. Well done.
Ted, I just want to tell you that you inspire me so much. My skill grows more and more and I definitely consider you the reason for that. Your creativity is unlike any I've seen and I'll definitely be more thrifty with my detail like you have been. Thank you.
I waited to comment till I saw all 3 videos and Now that I have I believe this is the best in depth set of videos showing everything a person could want (with the added links) to build cosplay armor. Very well done Ted. I really like the fact that you soften the edges and show how it was done. Thumbs up.
Wow- this tutorial really is going to help me take my fabrication to the next level. Little details (like sealing the inside) that I didn't even think about, now seem like a no-brainer after you described the benefits. THANK YOU TED!!
this was such a fantastic watch, ive learned a lot and took many notes, i am a film student in Toronto ontario and this will help me so much with my futuristic short film im working on. Thanks so much
I've been hesitant to make any sort of cosplay armor for the couple years I've been wanting to cosplay, yet after watching your series, I was quite surprised to find out how simple (Well, simple is a relative word) it really is to make foam armor. Anyways, thank you so much! I'm going to follow this tutorial to try and make some armor. Thanks for the videos Ted!
These tutorials are the best, i've been searching all over youtube for these kind of tutorials but all the others wheren not even close to how good yours is!! Keep making these videos man they help me out alot
This is super helpful. Im doing a solider 76-strike commander morrison costume from overwatch and I had no clue where to start on the armor but after watching this I feel alot more confident.
Another Great video. Thanks again for making another great video and making it available to the public. Your list to find the products makes life easy for any one looking for materials. Thanks again.
Ted, again you blew my mind with your amazing tutorials. I haven't seen costume/prop making DIYs this good since Indy Mogul. Thank you so much Ted, you rock!
Thank you so much man, i really needed help with how to properly glue the straps and such. I dont know why i never realized that i needed to expose the foam in order for it to stick.
Thanks for this, Ted. I've been binge watching yours and Bill Doran's videos at work for the last couple of weeks. This tutorial was awesome, one of my favorites! So much information. Now I can't wait to start on my first project. Thanks again.
Evil Ted, YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!!!!!! I built armor last year for Anime Expo, it looked great but by mid day, it fell apart. These 3 videos blew my mind and now cannot wait to start building again! More videos please!?!? ^_^
Just a little note to let you know I got that blade sharpener from your links and I absolutely love it! This makes the blades last SOOOOO much longer. Thanks for the links!
Fantastic series man! Ive really appreciated all the tips, tools and ideas you have shared throughout your videos. These are done very well and the creations are so awesome! Keep up the great work and creativity Ted! Thanks!
Your tutorials are so helpful! I feel like my cosplays will be on a whole other level now thanks to your tips and tricks 😉 lol Can't wait to see what you show us next!
Hey, Evil Ted Smith, you've helped me so much in my cosplay builds and costume design. I want to help you in return. I noticed you're cutting up a black t-shirt and spraying it to make it sticky. I just wanted to introduce you to this stuff called K-Tape. It's fairly similar to sports tape, but is stretchier, more flexible, and even stickier and is used as support strapping for people with weak joints and stuff like that. I first got introduced to it by my physio to use it on my hyper-mobile fingers. And don't worry about not being able to cut it or anything, even a normal pair of kitchen scissors can get through this stuff without too much hassle and if you've got sewing scissors or scissors from a first aid kit, it's like cutting paper. To top it all off, this stuff comes in massive rolls of 2 inch wide by over 100 feet long (5cm x 103.5cm), and it costs next to nothing compared to any other sports tape. I can't entirely remember, but I think I got 2 rolls for either $50(Australian dollars) total or $50(Aud) each, which is about $36 American. It's easy to use, super cheap, you get a lot of it, it'll save you heaps of money from buying t shirts to cut up, and hopefully that money will let you make more videos for us. I hope this little recommendation helps you, and if you're ever in Perth, Western Australia for whatever reason, please reach out, because I'd love to do some collaboration with you on some projects, whether it's just designing some stuff together, getting some tips on some of my builds, or even just getting to try on one of your amazing pieces, I'd love to work with you in some way.
Thank you Shay. I stopped doing this technique, I found it's easier to go back over the inside seams with high temp hot glue. I hope to visit Australia some day. Be sure to tell your local Con that you would like to have me as a guest.
I recently made a costume with your tips and it came out great! I got compliments on the handiwork even though it was my first shot, haha. Thank you for your awesome, in depth tutorials! You're definitely at the top of the trade.
Dude U R A MOVIE PROP N COSTUME GOD!!!! Love ur vids, Pls dont ever stop doing ur thing. I been wanting to get into this and after seeing your vids Im deff going to do it. TY!!
+Evil Ted Smith Oh theres NO WAY im gonna stop watching your vids, You got GREAT tips and how to's. So Ill be always watching ur vids while I try my hand act building wit foam
very kool, I would have never guessed how some of the armor for some movies are made( besides watching Face Off), thanks for making this vid, something for me to think about down the line!
After watching every video on this channel I can say with confidence that I have the know-how to tackle just about any cosplay job. Thanks Ted for all the great content. These videos are so easy to follow :]
This looks fantastic! I´m looking so forward to my first foam armor^^ At first it scares me so much, but the way how you explained it is really good and so I can start after my cosplayplans for the rest of the year. Thank you! :-D
thank you so much for this toturial! i really want to start make a foam armor (timebreaker Bardocks armor actually), and i needed somewhere to start, and this toturial just did it!
It was Punished Props who sent me your way. I been in the plans on making the VF Helmet from Robotech *Macross from Japan.* For my Vertech pilot cosplay for Anime Expo coming up next month.
this was awesome thank you for making these. can you take these creations even further? like adding LED lighting, fiber optics, or even hardening them? like with fiber glass and resin? and possible doing a video tutorial on how you personally go about it?
+Evil Ted Smith hey no worries that's why I asked. what about LEDs and fiber optics? ever worked with those? I have a bit of experience with LEDs for when I made lightsabers, but never on costumes.
Hello Ted, i really like the way you teach how to make costumes, is it possible for you to make a cos tutorial on how to make a nightwing suit? Thanks :)
LOVE the tutorials, Ted. Thank you for sharing all of your experience. I was wondering, why do you choose to use the contact cement? I've heard many people suggest using high temp hot glue. Could you tell me a bit about the pros and cons of these glues?
That`s cool. You`ve got some skills. I might suggest that you sand the foam seam edges and double coat with the Barge though. I`ve seen far too many broken seams from an improper gluing technique. A properly glued seam will hold for years. Nice even coats. Anyway..I`m enjoying your videos
Hi Ted, i really liked this tutorial, i was wondering if you could upload a tutorial of how to make Thor's The Dark World armor, please?? You are amazing i have learned a lot watching your videos
Hi Ted, thanks for these videos, I've learned a bunch of things and I'm looking forward to build an armor using those things. Do you think you might do a vid about making foam gauntlets ?
This just helped me a lot I'm making aFallout t-45d power armor and this guy told me about your channel and the techniques I was using scissors & hot glue gun I watched these videos and went wow I've been doing this all wrong I've ordered my stuff while watching your videos and within 2 weeks I should have all my supplies to start going thanks for the videos man :) just one question is there an alternative to barge glue ? Seems a bit out of my budget for my supplies and don't know if there's any other lower price ones that would work the same
Thanks for the tutorial. Just started making a RWBY Atlas Soldier armor set and made the shins today turned out really nice. Much easier that I thought it would be. Any chance we could get a tutorial on [easy ways] how to make a see through visor on a helmet that looks opaque? Basically, I'm trying to make a helmet that covers the top half of the face and I want to be able to see while wearing it without it appearing like a clear mask is there. I have seen tutorials on this but I can't afford an airbrush and those tutorials don't touch on blending the see through portion with the rest of the helmet so it all looks like painted foam.
Looks great! I've been watching your tutorials on this and plan to start on a cool chest piece from the popular video game Destiny called Crest of Alpha Lupi, and these tutorial will help me get it finished.
I enjoyed this, I'm attempting a fantasy warrior/knight armor next year for my cities con and I feel a little intimidated...seeing you making the armor makes me a bit scared because of the many steps, but in a way relieved... Anyways I subscribed and checking out your links
Amazing work! You've really inspired me to up my cosplay game. There is one thing I was wondering, because I accidentally skipped a step in my latest build: is it important to seal the inner seams with shirt strips & wood glue before I paint the outside, or can it be done after?
Ted can I recommend making an R2D2 Prop that's parts could move. If you plan on doing so could you please add cheap parts that make it move such as remote control cars etc.? I've been watching your videos since you started them and I recently subscribed. You are AWESOME! Thank you for all your help! Awesome body armor by the way!
Really good job!!! I have a question (i hope i dont have any mistake, english isnt my native language), can you use the Dremel to smooth the sides and edges?
What's the difference between the plasti-dip spray and your process for sealing the seams? Could the plasti-dip spray be used on the back to seal the seams just as easily or is that not sufficient?
After you spray paint, do you add a varnish or clear coat of some kind? Or do you find the spray paint adheres just fine on its own? Thanks! very helpful videos!
I love your videos. They provide allot of information and insperation. The only video I have not found yet is for gloves. Is this something you plan to make?
Hi, I live in the UK, I have found Barge Cement in three in different colours the yellow one you have got there is also a Blue and Green one, can I use any colour or just the yellow one??? Cheers John
Hi Evil Ted the tutorial video for armor building has been tremendous help and benefit and I wanted to thank you so much for the time. I'm working on my armor cosplay and I would guidances for coating. I completed the base of the armor and I was planning to coat the Mod Podge. Is it good idea when I coat with Mod Podge then afterwards spray with Plastidip? Please let me know your opinion. Thank you.
Hi Ted. Just a question about sealing the inside of the armor. Wouldn't it be better to heat seal and Plasti Dip the inside as well instead of the modpodge or in your opinion is it not worth it? Great tutorials! Thanks!
I'm pretty sure someone has asked before, but I'd love to know how you made the armor in your intro, the one where it shows it in white and than the full armor next to it. I love how you did the mask with the fan-ish type of front and yes I'd love to know how that one was made and if you have a video of it somewhere. Thanks in advance and I'm excited to be apart of your channel now. I'm learning so many things, but don't have some of the items you have listed. One is cost right now and two I don't have that much room to work in. oh and three, no place to spray paint anything.
I will do that, and if it works out I'll show a photo, my only thing is the latex. I'm not allergic per-say, but it does bother me. So the other rubber spray you use might be a better thing to for me to try. I'm just worried about the cracking part of it, as I've heard from others that it might do.
Hey Ted live the channel. I was checking out your website and was wondering what the chances are of you posting the patterns for your armor from this video. I'd love to build it and it looks like a awesome base for many different ideas. Thanks for the awesome info.
Hey, Ted. First-time foam armor builder. Love your Tutorials. Quick question: to further reduce seams and give the armor a more smooth, metallic look, would you recommend a high-build wet sand primer before the paint coat? I have a helmet that needs to look more metallic and smooth. Or what would you recommend? Thank you!
Hey Ted!! I know this is an older video but do you happen to have a follow up on how to add details like LED lights? Also, With this build, you did 1 inch strips of t-shirt fabric over the seams... why not just line the inside with fabric?
Evil Ted Smith you have inspired my wife and I into trying this for a hobby, thank you. While going through your list above I came across Balloon Latex the link is not working for me. What exactly do you mean by Balloon Latex?
Evil Ted Smith, Thank you very much! As I watched more and more of your tutorials I found the answer towards my question. Thank you for the update on the material. Have a great day.
the only thing i think your videos are lacking in are more extensive live tests and showcasing. dropping the costume on the body form is cool, but I personally would like to see how it moves against a living body if say... i dropped my weapon and had to pick it up. is it going to push up around my neck? or is it going to move with me enough that i can easily retrieve my blade? beyond that, i love your videos. they're great help to costumers.
Thank you for making such excellent videos. I should make a spray-booth / room as you do with drop plastic. Great notion! Questions that I'd love to have answered (you can even provide video links if you have addressed them) - impact resistance : foam is very soft. I harden by coating it in many coats of white glue + flour, but even still. I have also used thin styrene (0.3 mm thickness) and Worbla to prevent that wrinkly look. Recommendations? - you mentioned Balloon latex, and were kind enough to provide a link. I'm Canadian, so my options for shipping would very likely equal twice the cost of the latex. I am familiar with Mold Making Latex. Are they interchangeable?
The tip about reinforcing the seams was pure GOLD. Thanks so much.
Thank you for subscribing.
dude you are amazing i give you alot of respect for learning these things and helping us learn.

I've been watching your videos since you started them and I recently subscribed. You are AWESOME! Thank you for all your help! Awesome body armor by the way!
Hey thanks for the sick tutorial, I was wondering if hot glue works for attaching the pieces?
Yes Hot glue as well.
Will you making a video on how to make weapons? (Swords,guns,ect...)or a video for fabric say if you wanted more of clothing look than armor.
Or will you be making one for arms and legs?
Awsome build!!! You have inspired me to build a costume for Halloween.
Yes build that costume.
Genial !!! .. muy buen tutorial , felicidades sigue adelante.
ESAU FF Gracias por su apoyo!
i wish i had your amazing hand crafting skills
This reminds me of Katniss' Mockingjay armor from Mockingjay! Great job.
Bob Bobini Thanks!
You're weocome
men...youre so awesome!!!!
i learn many things of your videos
Gretings from chile
Hello Chile and thank you for subscribing.
you have a lot of fans here
Thanks. I'm working on it.
Really good job!!! I have a question (i hope i dont have any mistake, english isnt my native language), can you use the Dremel to smooth the sides and edges?
+Nana Yowane I think you could. You'd just have to be careful. Also your english is good, don't worry. :)
Just amazing ! You are so good at armor crafting !
I have a question, Which thickness do you use ? and what is the medium cost for a complete armor ?
What's the difference between the plasti-dip spray and your process for sealing the seams? Could the plasti-dip spray be used on the back to seal the seams just as easily or is that not sufficient?
After you spray paint, do you add a varnish or clear coat of some kind? Or do you find the spray paint adheres just fine on its own? Thanks! very helpful videos!
I love your videos. They provide allot of information and insperation. The only video I have not found yet is for gloves. Is this something you plan to make?
+George Dunn I'll add it to the list.
Hi, I live in the UK, I have found Barge Cement in three in different colours the yellow one you have got there is also a Blue and Green one, can I use any colour or just the yellow one??? Cheers John
+John Sleeman I've used the yellow one the most. I should try out the other ones.
Very nice! Btw, if I would do this for my son, how can I model his chest first, so that the armor fits?
Hi Evil Ted the tutorial video for armor building has been tremendous help and benefit and I wanted to thank you so much for the time.
I'm working on my armor cosplay and I would guidances for coating.
I completed the base of the armor and I was planning to coat the Mod Podge. Is it good idea when I coat with Mod Podge then afterwards spray with Plastidip?
Please let me know your opinion.
Thank you.
You can if you want to, but it's not necessary
Hi Ted. Just a question about sealing the inside of the armor. Wouldn't it be better to heat seal and Plasti Dip the inside as well instead of the modpodge or in your opinion is it not worth it?
Great tutorials! Thanks!
PhoenixRevival00 Not worth it! Just seal it up with modpodge or rubber latex.
Alrighty, thanks for the feedback.=)
I'm pretty sure someone has asked before, but I'd love to know how you made the armor in your intro, the one where it shows it in white and than the full armor next to it. I love how you did the mask with the fan-ish type of front and yes I'd love to know how that one was made and if you have a video of it somewhere. Thanks in advance and I'm excited to be apart of your channel now. I'm learning so many things, but don't have some of the items you have listed. One is cost right now and two I don't have that much room to work in. oh and three, no place to spray paint anything.
+MG OC It all starts with you. The only way make something is to do it! Just that simple. Start small and work your way up.
I will do that, and if it works out I'll show a photo, my only thing is the latex. I'm not allergic per-say, but it does bother me. So the other rubber spray you use might be a better thing to for me to try. I'm just worried about the cracking part of it, as I've heard from others that it might do.
Watch my tools of the trade video.
I did, it was a great video, in fact I finished watching them all. :)
Hey Ted live the channel.
I was checking out your website and was wondering what the chances are of you posting the patterns for your armor from this video. I'd love to build it and it looks like a awesome base for many different ideas.
Thanks for the awesome info.
+S Freak77 Hmmm… Maybe.
Thanks for thinking about it.
Hey, Ted. First-time foam armor builder. Love your Tutorials. Quick question: to further reduce seams and give the armor a more smooth, metallic look, would you recommend a high-build wet sand primer before the paint coat? I have a helmet that needs to look more metallic and smooth. Or what would you recommend? Thank you!
Yes, 400 and 600 wet sand really helps take down the seem.
Hey Ted!! I know this is an older video but do you happen to have a follow up on how to add details like LED lights? Also, With this build, you did 1 inch strips of t-shirt fabric over the seams... why not just line the inside with fabric?
I use to do that. Now I go over the inside seams with hight temp hot gun. Works faster and easier.
you are awesome!!! i'm now trying to make a samurai armor... but my problem is how to make the helmet...
Stick to it. You'll figure it out!
Evil Ted Smith you have inspired my wife and I into trying this for a hobby, thank you. While going through your list above I came across Balloon Latex the link is not working for me. What exactly do you mean by Balloon Latex?
I found something better, Poly latex 60. www.polytek.com/products/poly-latex-60
You even included links to all of the supplies?! Subscribed!
Thank you for your support.
Thank you for making such excellent videos. I should make a spray-booth / room as you do with drop plastic. Great notion!
Questions that I'd love to have answered (you can even provide video links if you have addressed them)
- impact resistance : foam is very soft.
