Everyone always separates paid fire fighters and volunteers like were two different things were the same damn thing we battle the same demons and take the same risks same training and same sacrifices except us volunteers do it all for FREE on top of working a normal job and proud to do it the reward is to help others at their darkest times when they need us we will be there paid or not.

Officer Kuester Congratulations! There's nothing bigger than the heart of a volunteer. I joined when I was 18... next month I'll be a "volly" for 30 years. A word of advice... never stop training. The best class I took was "Firefighter survival and self rescue". Stay safe my brothers... I'll see you all on the big one.
If you like being a volunteer and going on calls, you owe it to yourself to go for a career in firefighting. 15 years full time, just made Lieutenant . All I'm saying is if you want to do the job in higher frequency try and go full time. A typical 24 hour shift in my department is around 30 runs a day out of three stations. Our busiest engine does 15- 20 of those. In a 25 -30 year career you will probably go on close to 100,000 runs, maybe more. Again I'm not disrespecting volunteer, we all risk and sacrifice a lot. It's just my opinion.

My dad was a marine in the marine corps before I was born. My brother was I think born at my dads base where he was stationed in north Carolina, jaxonville. While I was born in a hospital at high way 17 I believe, and the high way was near Bolivia, north Carolina and south port. My dad is right now a firefighter but he got a new job Of being the guy on cat walks in nuclear power plants, his training starts around August 1st-20nd, I respec him and all personal either retired or not! Now Im 10 can't wait to become 11 Aug. 18!!
