I loved this movie but I could have sworn these two guys would have hated it. I guess they see it for what it’s supposed to be, a cool summer movie with a cool (although implausible) plot
You never know with these two. But the thing is, they valued original concepts in films because they see so many in a year, and they gave thumbs up to a lot more action movies than you'd expect.
The Rock, Con Air & Face/Off in back to back years, it was an absolutely incredible for Nic Cage. Strange choices for films to be in right after winning an Oscar, but they were all excellent films in their own right. Especially The Rock.
This was one weird movie, starring two actors whose talent has always been underrated (though I have never been much of a fan of Nicolas Cage). Still, they proceed with an utter realism this concept probably wouldn't deserve if it hadn't been helmed by John Woo or anyone of his caliber. Cage and Travolta clearly love their roles (all four of them) and give it their all. This should not work, and it does. I'm not surprised that Gene and Roger liked the film. It's got the performances, the actors are in there pitching, and, befitting a John Woo picture, the action is fantastic. I actually enjoyed this film.
@@speedyboris Ah, too bad. I wish someone would upload their entire Jurassic Park: The Lost World review. Ebert's double take at the end of it was hilarious!
possibly their worst collective review. zero star movie. even the clips seem pathetic in retrospect. the story is pointlessly complicated in a boring way. it should be camp but it’s so serious that even fails. and it’s way too long as a kid who grew up enjoying die hard and all the ridiculous Schwarzenegger movies, i think this movie is the nadir of that lineage. the beginning of twenty years of Michael Bay style garbage that murdered the entire genre
No their worst review was Speed 2. They mostly argued about whether Sandra Bullock was on camera enough and as a result it was baffling why they enjoyed it (and they were pretty much the only critics to give it a positive review, making it all the more a wasted opportunity).
Yeah whatever. This is directed by John Woo, not Michael Bay. Woo's style has nothing in common with Bay from that decade. What makes this movie fun is how Travolta and Cage portray the characters when they swap faces.
This film was vastly superior to anything Michael Bay directed. I don't know how you could possibly declare this the "nadir" of action cinema. The performances are not outdone by action unlike Bay films which simply have non-entity characters merely surrounded by wall-to-wall explosions.

Face Off is a great movie.
Its a fun movie
So cool to see them agree on popcorn art!
The performances really propel the film.
Nicolas Cage was also in Con Air. The same year he did Face Off.
ok and?
he was the king of 97
@uyeda face/off is the waaaay better movie. I saw con air once back in 97. That was enough for me

the rock was awesome
Like how today, they can just use prosthetics
This film is really flawed. It drove me mad.

Did you see any other Woo movies?
Roger Ebert loved Nicolas Cage and Gene Siskel loved John Travolta. Makes sense they would both enjoy this film.
Gina Gershon is such a babe:
I love this movie! John Travolta and Nicolas Cage are so good!
Shut up
Wait, they liked it!? I mean, who wouldn’t like Face/Off but I always assumed that they didn’t like it. Guess I was wrong.
Do you have the rest of this episode? The entire episode-which was full of HUGE disagreements that week-hasn't been uploaded anywhere else yet.
Sadly I don't. I'd love to see the rest too.

Nonsense it's a great action movie.
