I don't think anyone did. Another classic example of the WWF/E's creative machine sticking someone with a lame gimmick. He was all but finished until he went down the road Steve Austin took to get out of his own stupid character at the time and began to be more himself which is even moreso the problem now days where guys are completely scripted and taught to play dumb characters. Rock, Austin, Undertaker are all examples of what can happen when guys are granted a little freedom to infuse their own personality into the mix. Especially Taker. He took a gimmick that could've easily been one of the more laughable lame characters in WWF/E history and made it legendary.

Dumb people be like: "WWE is fake. Why do you keep watching it?". Sure, most of the punches and kicks rarely connect to your adversary to the point of pain, but the moves require strict coordination to execute and durability to take them because they can hurt (i.e. a suplex from the top rope or even a powerbomb). Besides, it's World Wrestling ENTERTAINMENT. What do you expect? Actual fights that end up with a lot of blood and maybe some broken bones? Give me a break. We WWE fans know that most of its content is scripted and choreographed, but that is why it is entertaining (think of movies and TV shows). You watch them because you like the plot and/or the critiques.

I’m a little older than you (60), but growing up in N. Carolina, I remember seeing Ric Flair’s first match for Crockett’s promotion (just called NWA at the time, if I remember correctly) when he was still a teenager and I was 6 or maybe 7. I never thought it was “real fighting,” back then or now. But it convinced me of one thing: if tough (OK, resilient) and talented athletes are doing things you can’t even dream of, it hardly matters if the match itself is choreographed (see Savage vs Steamboat at WM3) or outcome/results/final score predetermined, if you as a fan don’t know it in advance. And that’s how I think of all athletic contests to this day. Makes it real easy to never bet on sports, I’ll tell you that!
