- TL;DR MJ sucks and the rest of the game is fine.
I found Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to be a bit of a mixed bag. There's a lot of stuff I absolutely LOVE about it, BUT there are a few things about it that I absolutely HATE.
Hopefully they make changes in the third game instead of doubling down.

It's really weird how they are aware people don't wanna play their dumb minigames in a spider-man game so they let us skip them, but they don't let us skip the mj sections in this games. Like, they let you play as venom, nobody complains cause he is a super-powered beast in this superhero game, but who actually looks forward to play a dumbdown stealth/third person shooter section with a regular ass human. Specially here, where this game desperately needs more miles sections in the main campaign rather than relegating him to side missions, they are so unfair to my boy

The game is quite frankly unfinished, It felt like they rushed to get the game out and had to cut half the game then loosely stitched a narrative together with what they had left.

I feel that MJ in these games is overcompensation for the Raimi films painting her as a damsel in distress. But at least MJ in those movies didn't intentionally throw herself into danger unlike this MJ.
Also, I don't care what anyone says, MJ jumping in front of Peter will always be stupid to me. It's like someone taking a bullet for Wolverine, or Superman.

In reality, Lois Lane has jumped to protect Superman, literally in the new series you can see that, she cares about Peter and does not want to lose him
My only beef with this game were the Third act, and how separated it felt, i wanted to see more of Peter snd Miles doing stuff together

Dude, Peter got thrown into that fridge by something able to throw MJ into him with enough force to both throw him into the fridge and then knock it on him. Do you know how force works? It takes a lot of force to throw someone through the air even a single inch, and the moment that person hits something or someone, most of that force immediately dissipates, and Peter has insane durability, meaning if he hadn’t been there, MJ would have definitely died from force alone, but instead they’re both thrown back. That’s insane in terms of force

You know the mj missions are terrible when in the first spiderman the community went out of their way to create a mod to skip those missions XD Seriously though i have a job, so not much time for gaming anymore and its so annoying when that little time i have to play (that i have waited for like a week) i have to play with mj. Making altercations to his lore would've backfired at some point.
Adding in miles would complicate crap on what these sucka's are supposed to do when it comes down to story management between peter and miles... and not making Mary Jane the normal model enduced actress that she is, but instead, a journalist who we can somehow play would distract the player and the story in general from what is important.
Making Harry Venom would have made the story feel repetitive with the trope of "My friend turned evil, wahhh, wahh."
If peter was the only Spider around... insomniac would have never been given an excuse to reduce him to a jumbling bafoon.

They should've taken a page from the Arkham games, by actually making their Spider-Man fallow the source material of the BOOKS when it comes to lore... and doing their own thing at the same time.
Honestly, bro? I'm starting to lose hope for the story of Spider-Man 3 to ever catch up or surpass the first games story because of complicated story choices.

The only hope i have LEFT for this series is for them to go above and beyond upgrading and evolving their Web-Swinging and Combat System to their fullest might.
After that? I'm ready to see someone else handle a new Spider-Man series. Hopefully that one leans more on the comics, over ambitious lore changes.
It’s almost as if they thought playing as Spider-Man would get old or something. In the Arkham trilogy, we almost exclusively played as Batman for 3 games. It never once got old.
Still, I haven’t lost all hope yet. Am I as confident in insomniac as before? Not necessarily, but I think if they listen to us, we might get some improvements.

Even anti venom kind of messes up the story, whats the point of the symbiote arc if he just gets to keep a symbiote with the same power and 0 drawbacks. I get why it was done gameplay wise though.

I think despite how messy the game’s plot is, it actually has a lot of good ideas. It’s not broken to the core like most of MCU Phase 4 and “cough” Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The problem is how everything was executed, but that can be fixed while keeping Harry as Venom and a lot of the story we got.
Something I think would've really improved the story is having the Venom symbiote talk to Peter during the black suit arc. I mean the symbiote having actual conversations with Peter and not just tempting him. It could really flesh out Venom's character and develop a deep emotional connection between the symbiote and Peter. Then once we get to the symbiote invasion, Venom would genuinly want to help Harry heal the word by giving everyone symbiote powers. But the conflict comes from that his way of healing the world isn't the right way and very unnatural. Also, I have an idea on how Venom's relationship with Peter can depend on the player's actions. How I would do this is making an unusual change to the symbiote Peter boss fight and I'm not gonna explain it here since it'll fill the comments section. But let's just say you would have to make a choice which will result in either Harry as Venom wanting Peter to be with him like what we got or Harry as Venom hating Peter similar to the classic Venom from the comics.
I made a short series of Reddit posts where I went more in depth on how I would improve Venom if anyone’s interested. Some other ideas I have for improving the game are adding more variety to the side missions….including one where we would get a guest appearance from a certain merc with the mouth. But I rather not flood the comments talking about it.
Interesting stuff my friend. Also I don’t know if you saw but there’s a side quest in this game featuring “Blind Al” which made me think there would be a Deadpool appearance. It would’ve been awesome!
Plot is good not that messy really but agreed. The first 2 acts were great but the third act was rushed which I agree.
I think the “jealous” Harry scene was more of a “you’re essentially letting me die by not giving me back the symbiote and now my dad is sitting here thanking you for always being my friend and how he loves you like a son. Fuck you” kinda thing. I’d be mad too if my dad said that to my best friend who just betrayed me
I saw it that way too, and it makes sense for the characters. My only issue with the Harry stuff is that it seems like they couldn’t make up their minds as to whether Harry was perfectly bonded with the symbiote or not. Like was it Harry making these choices? Or was it Venom? It was a little unclear to me.

My guess for harry is that he was happy when he had it was because during his treatment he was using him the entire time for the entirety if SM1 , SMMM, and however long before that. So it's like he kind of has a dependancy on it now? I personally think that would also explain why he's angry without him (i mean, he is infact dying without it lmao). I dunno this would just mean I'm doing the writing for the writers so all we can do is speculate since I don't think we're gonna ever get a answer 🤷♂️
I think the biggest disappointment for me was just the cohesion of the game’s narrative.
The first game felt great. Perhaps the pacing was a tad too slow for my liking around the middle of the game, but I really liked it overall. A good mixture of Spider-Man and Peter Parker drama. I just felt like Spider-Man 2 has too much Spider-Man spectacle, which sacrifices some more outside the mask missions to balance things out.
Miles’s portion of the story is significantly shorter, but what he does have with Mister Negative is really good. I indeed think it’s a bit of a missed opportunity, for a modern game like that grants the player two playable Spider-Men, that Miles gets sidelined by Peter all the time. It kind of makes sense in the story, with Peter choosing Harry over Miles mostly, but still…
Bully Lowenthal started out with a rage filled bang, after Peter’s resurrection. And after that, Peter became more pretty jovial again and such. He was slowly built up to become less kind and more frustrated and such… but after his contact with the meteorite, he spirals into overdrive real quick. It’s like the writers thought: We need to have Miles and Peter fight soon and Peter needs to be more consumed by the symbiote to warrant him fighting his protégé. It was just weird that everything with Peter’s symbiote arc takes place in like… two canonical days. It would’ve been nicer to let it simmer a bit longer, so to speak. This game has a lot of awesome set pieces. But really… maybe it wasn’t all that necessary, for the story’s sake, to save as many villains from Kraven as they did, if that meant giving symbiote Peter, or Venom some more time. Everything with Venom went really quick. Too quick. It’s a shame they had to cut missions in the third act. Peter and Venom/Harry could’ve had more scenes. And damn… they could have and should have given Miles more scenes with Harry or Venom. Perhaps Peter started to kind of ignore Harry as the symbiote took hold, what happened during and after the Lizard chase. And then Miles could spend some time with Harry, who feels lonely, sick and is sad that the EMF got destroyed. And Harry could just be glad that Miles would give him some company in such tough time in his life.
I quite liked MJ in the first game. I could understand her side of the arguments she had with Peter, though she was quite naive. But in her missions (which simply aren’t the greatest), she was doing some sneaky, oftentimes kind of illegal reporting. But her missions in this game stray away from that too much. Yes, she could have had some Sable training. No, that would not mean she could feasibly take out so many hunters who have trained for far longer than she has.
My personal favourite villain in this one was Kraven. Whereas other parts of the story (even though I like most parts of it) have significant plot holes or worse parts to it, Kraven, is nigh perfect. I don’t really rate Spider-Man characters on how well they are adapted. I have really grown to like Spider-Man (I really like him) -despite me feeling quite indifferent to most super heroes- but I don’t read comics and such. I do about a lot of the more renowned comics, whether those are generally viewed positively or not. And I knew the story of Kraven’s last hunt before going into the story. The only gripes I’d say I’d have are that Kraven has an army in the first place, which I do understand from a videogame perspective and that he calls for his beasts in his boss fight, because it would have been more in-character to want to fight Spidey alone. I think his race against the clock suited him well. He fights sickness, as Harry does, which makes for some thematic symbolism. He wants to die in his prime, on his own terms. That adds a layer of pity to him, even though he’s a completely ruthless menace. Damn I loved how ruthless the man was. They definitely amped up his strength compared to other versions (same case for Venom). I liked this Kraven so much, that I got inspired to implement a relatively similar character into the fantasy story I’m writing.
This game’s narrative is mostly based on moments, to me. Whereas the first game is a cohesive story, structured more clearly and properly building to a crescendo, this one has more awesome set pieces and a lot of great individual moments, but I find the connective tissue to be subpar. And I can only imagine how much better some moments would have hit if said connective tissue was a bit better. This game either should have had a few of its set pieces cut to allow for some more crucial story moments, or it should have been longer, keeping the ambitious scale, but giving it more time to reach its full potential. I'd have preferred the latter, of course.
Gameplay is immensely satisfying. In that department, this game is really, really, really good. The traversal is superb. Best traversal system I know. Combat is mostly an upgrade. I do think it’s weird how both Miles and Peter get their own abilities, between which you can switch, but they share the same four gadgets. It’s weird that none of the gadgets, barring the basic web shooters, are carried over. Both from a gameplay and a narrative perspective. And of course the Venom gameplay… I’ve replayed it so, so often.
Your right mj metal gear solid stealth missions suck that’s why I rate the game a 9/10
Spider-Man PS4 will go in gaming history as a classic story for Spider-Man. Spider-Man 2 PS5 has amazing visuals, great gameplay (for the most part), however the story………I just can’t. Makes me want to uninstall it immediately. The swinging is the only thing that’s holding me back from uninstalling it. Hopefully they cook something good with the DLC.
Yeah it just doesn’t have “it,” y’know? That special something that elevates it. I still like it but it feels like they had some type of interference that forced them into making certain decisions.

Do you remember that Peter does not activate his spider sense with Venom? I also appreciate the scene more because MJ sacrifices herself for Peter so that he doesn't hurt her.

But still, even ignoring spider sense, spider-man have way better reflexes than a normal human, even faster than captain america, so he would react way faster than MJ. Also, it would make sense for him to take the hit, because he have super human resistance and healing.

Honestly, Spider-Man is my favorite super hero. It pained me to give the game a 6/10. I had the same exact gripes about Mj. Plus the fact the she blamed Peter fpr everything when she became scream. Also she's ugly this time around. I didn't like the nerfing of Peter just to prop up Miles and Mj. The pacing fell to pieces once you get the black. Arguably before then. Black Cat was only in the game to tell us that she has a woman. Why is Hailey here by the way? Also, game is kinda very woke. Especially the side missions. I only kept on Jjj's podcast. Listening to what's her name after the first few times she broadcast makes me puke.

I agree with everything you said here. I liked the game but found it to be a disappointment. I also didn’t like how incompetent they made Peter seem and how flawless Miles was. It is supposed to be a mentor/student relationship between the two of them but Miles was a more competent Spider-Man the entire time. Peter even practically admits it by saying the city doesn’t need him if they have Miles. The relationship felt non existent. This game did Peter dirty every chance it got.

11:53 I feel this scene was made for another reason. Harry told peter that Norman is working on another cure, for Norman to develop a son-father figure with peter meant the cure is not promising and Norman is starting to cope. Harry saw this and knew it's the end for him.
I thought that as well, but it’s still a little confusing for me. That whole character arc kinda feels like they didn’t wanna fully commit to Harry being a villain. It just felt a little off to me.
To be fair the point of MJ missions are that not all heroes can be where you want, I'm just grateful they made these mission much more fun than the first

On the Rio Morales bit, it makes sense as to why she's acting like that twords Peter at that point of the story since Miles had gotten captured by Kraven's hunters, and she hadn't heard from him in a while. I think she has a good reason to be upset if her superhero son's superhero coworker doesn't know where he's at when all her son does is talk about how to be a better Spider-man for him (Peter). It's not like it's out of nowhere
Edit: I will say, the nerfing of Peter kinda goes deeper, at least to me. Like, why did he barely use the iron spider arms through the story at pivotal points? Coney Island is a spot where he could've definitely used them, in tandem with the symbiote, and other stuff. Just feels like an oversight on insomniac's behalf
I understand she was worried about Miles but the whole time in that conversation Peter was just saying “I’ll find him.” It’s not like he said “who cares about Miles he can take care of himself.”
It just felt like the aggression was on the wrong side of the conversation. Like if he went full bully Lowenthal and just starting spewing I’d understand why she’d get so angry, but instead she’s angrily telling him to go help Miles when…that’s what he was already going to do.
And then later on when he’s like “I’ll be on my best behavior” it seemed off to me because he wasn’t even acting out that much. He was just being kinda broody. And even then, she’s still giving him the business. To me it just felt like they didn’t fully commit to Peter being a jerk, so the aggression towards him felt a little unwarranted because he himself never gets that angry or aggressive.

@SaceStation I can understand your angle, but I think that's more fault on Peter not being a jerk than Rio grilling Peter about her superhero son. If I was a parent of a superhero child and he's missing but his friend isn't? Imma be grilling the friend a little, because where's my kid and why don't you know, you're their mentor. It's like a teacher not knowing where a student went during their class period. That teacher, for as long as the kid is in their class, is responsible for that kid
I agree 100%, I’m not saying she’s not justified. I just think they missed an opportunity to really lean into Peter being a complete jerk. He should’ve at least lashed out or yelled back or something because that’s what symbiote Peter would do. Instead Miles’s mom is the aggressor in that exchange which felt a little off to me. Black suit Spider-Man should be aggressive towards everyone in my opinion.
In my opinion the game is good I just wish the anti venom part was better and the suit but the third act was good. It started with venom then playing as venom then killing Kraven then scream

Bro,i have been seeing the comments of people about spider man 2 being such a bad game,which i was totally opposing.but the inside of me was still telling that there are some things that are not right .But i wasn't able to figure out what was wrong with this game,like i was questioning myself,what makes it bad,like it gives us playable venom,webwings like isnt that great.But i finally watched ur vedio,and iam now convinced that this game still needs to improve few things.But in my opinion its still a great game.

I think you forgot not only does mj react faster than peter In that cutscene as well as mj taking the brunt of that attack since she is in front of that attack also Peter was down for 11 seconds.
Fridges weight between 300 pounds Pete lowballed can life 10 tons or 20,000 pounds even if he is “tried” as people say you don’t get 100 times weaker that is like me saying I can curl 90 pounds but me being tried I can only curl 20 pounds do you see how dumb that is.
Not to mention peter can’t even dodge lighting anymore in the sandman fight something he could do with ease in the first game.
Peter when saving tombstone with harry gets stuck under a pathetically tiny brick wall when in the first game at Fisk tower when saving people Pete lifts rubble at least 5 times bigger and then he throws it.
Peter was objectively nerfed in this game there is way too many anti feats for that not to be the case and I have only talked about a few of them.

Also, Venom is Spider-Man’s opposite, so it was annoyingly strange to me that Peter never shot webs from his wrists when he has the symbiote, and Venom never used web swinging after Peter had it. Strange choices.

I love the game too, it's fantastic, I agree, and I agree the story is great too but some points are invalid which I disagree. But the good outweighs the bad. Only the third act was rushed as per Bryan Intihar. First 2 acts were great. 19:39 they tried to do something and tell a story that would exceed their expectations but Sony pressured them. Either way the game is 9/10.
Here's where I found some points invalid:
3:49 Peter wasn't nerfed at all as both Peter and Miles got equal amount of struggles. Peter beated more baddies then Miles ever did. Peter didn't always need Miles' or MJ's help as he did mostly on his own then teaming. He beated Kraven, Lizard, Venom, Scream and Wraith. Miles only beated Mysterio and Mr Negative.
4:33 Miles got saved by MJ. So he didn't beat Venom.
6:36 its fine if Miles isn't focued that much because he is secondary protagonist like a side character
11:34 Harry was mad at Peter because he refused to give him the suit and that Peter gets rid of it to try and warn Harry that its dangerous but Harry doesn't believe him. Plus he was jealous that Norman loves and cares about Peter. Norman doesn't love Peter more. He just thanks him for being his friend. What they were going for is good but could have had the third act longer.

And sure they listen to fans, but clearly with regards to MJ missions they’re also very willing to ignore us.

@@vengeance4566 it’s part of the story. i will admit it is poorly written but it’s not because they can’t write miles as a character. peter is purposefully leaving miles out causing a shift in their relationship which makes the miles vs peter thing more impactful. peter literally says “i’m finally everything everyone needs me to be” and miles replied “you don’t even pick up my calls”. it’s part of the plot. it’s just poorly written. plus i’m pretty sure this is supposed to be a peter game anyway? that’s why he “takes a break” at the end so miles can start having more spotlight and having more focus on him as a character.

Miles didn’t even use the bell in any of the cutscenes of them fighting it’s a gameplay mechanic, story-wise as soon as the bell was rung Peter tore the black suit off. And that’s ignoring the entire game trying to paint miles as just being flat out more powerful/capable than Peter as he’s grown.

Maybe they didn’t literally nerf him, but it feels like they gave him the short end of the stick a little. Like he gets beaten up, choked out, literally killed. He doesn’t feel as strong as he usually is. Like this is the same guy who took on the entire sinister six in one day.

Miles in the comics is not stronger then Pete miles has weaker base powers then peter strength,speed,durability, ect… but miles makes up with his venom powers to be on par with Pete.
So no miles is not stronger then Pete if anything peter is still the strongest of the two being the more physically dominant,smarter, experienced and better fighter of the two because of his own martial art the way of the spider.
I loved Spider-Man 2, but I'm only giving it a 6/10 cuz they made an incomplete game with a rushed third act and without adding basic features (NG+ and Mission replay) that should've been there on Day 1. The story wasn't as good as the first two games and they literally doubled down on MJ missions knowing ppl hated them. And don't even get me started on her design. To top that off, a bunch of dog shit side missions for Miles and the amt of bugs and glitches that broke my game several times. Hated the Black Cat mission as well. I can tell the first two games were focussed and made with lots of love. But SM 2 clearly reeked of unnecessary pandering that led to mediocre story-telling.
I quite enjoyed the black cat mission, it’s got that ratchet and clank vibe to it. But my enjoyment of it did diminish a little when I realized it’s just filler.
@@SaceStation Exactly. The portal aspects of the mission were really cool. I was actually expecting her to interact with symbiote peter and maybe have her as a playable character as well. Instead they made her bi and put her in a mission that basically did nothing for the story. But that's just me.
