4:36 That is actually a good theory that has been discussed in the early day discussions when this chapter came out. Fujimoto likes to allow his viewesr to interpret some aspects of the story in their own way and doesn't spoon fed it all, the 'Himeno's soul being freed' thing does click with a lot of people

You picked the _PERFECT_ episode for a Kobeni cosplay. Also, I was impressed at how you made a guess about Ghost Devil & Hinemo's memories even before the episode started.
I love that Power dives in to attack the zombies to make up for running away, and Aki & Denji get back to the _Nuts or Nothin'_ fight from when they first met, but they're both together this time. It goes perfectly in to the credits which reinforces how much the three of them have really become a tight little family unit by the end of the season, totally different from where they started off.
As a manga reader, ever since Episode 1 started with the shot of that mysterious door, I knew _exactly_ where Season 1 would end with that same shot from Denji's dream here. That's the main cliffhanger to sit for setting up Season 2, which is perfect, as like most teases in *Chainsaw Man* it won't carry as much weight until afterwards, so it makes the (likely) long wait easier - because with MAPPA, it'll be worth the wait for more no matter how long it takes.
That final final quote about the Country Mouse & City Mouse just seems to be a confirmation that they're planning on Season 2, and to give the manga fans a little extra hype for what they know is coming while not spoiling as anything. Perfectly executed.

"That's a pretty dumb reason",says Power to Denji in Episode 4,about his dream.
This part of the series is Fujimoto going full throttle with his references. The last cigarette that Himeno gives Aki,with the words "easy revenge!" in english,is a clear homage to Fooly Cooly,and it's iconic "never knows best" cig. That entire scene is incredible,Ushio's music just elevates it. Hearing poor Aki say "I'll join you soon,Himeno" hurts everytime :(
And then,we have the train scene,which is most definitely just Fujimoto wanting to show his Spiderman 2 fanboy-ism. He even has characters from his previous manga outright mention the movie in the exact same location lmao.
But by far my favourite homage,and by extension,scene from this first part of the series,is the nut kicking constent. Not only is it 1:1 to the ending of Inglorious Basterds (Denji even mimicks Brad Pitt by saying something like "and that just doesn't sit well with me"),but it also seems to be paying tribute to Uvogin's requiem scene from Hunter x Hunter. Fujimoto wears his heart on his sleeve.
I think that moment incapsulates the entirety of CSM and its author,to an extent: at the end of their mission,our squad has gained nothing. The government got pieces of the gun,sure,but getting revenge for Himeno didn't bring her back. That hole will never be filled again.
So why is it that two dudes releasing their frustration on a dude by making him squeal looks so uplifting? Fujimoto is just trying to tell us to cling to life as hard as we can,even if it's the most absurd,meaningless things in life that keep you going. Your reasons to live,in a world as broken as ours,are still just as valid as anyone else's,even if it's just taking care of a cat,knowing what a boob feels like,or kicking a guy in the dick.
His editor says that a big reason as to why he's earned himself such a gigantic following is because,being a guy in his 20's still,he understands the worries of his generation,the rise in poverty,the dehumanizing jobs,the cities that feel like soulless machines trying to swallow you whole,and puts it to paper. So I can only thank him for helping me find a lot of light between all the bleakness.
I also love that it feels like,in the end,there's a lot of previous history between Sawatari,Katana Man and their posse that we're simply not privy too. We don't even get the dude's name,for god's sake. Chainsaw Man is very fast paced,yes,but I think it only adds to that feeling being kept in the dark under the government that just amps up the frustration and the sense of loss. Why did Himeno have to die for these nameless goons,just looking for revenge? It all feels so meaningless.
Lastly,that door scene. In the same way Denji had that moment of realization at the start of episode 10,it always felt to me like something at the back of his head is telling him that he deserves none of the nice moments his life has given him recently. Love that the season ends exactly where it began:with that door dream,right before Denji wakes back up to go to work again. Nothing has changed inside him.
Here's some trivia that's probably coincidental: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,which is clearly a direct inspiration for CSM,was localized in Italy as "Non aprite quella porta",meaning "Don't open that door". Spooky.
If you loved this part of CSM,stick around,because it really is a work that just keeps building and building upon itself,and becomes even better on a second read/watch,once you understand the bigger picture. Excited about what may come next!

Once again, a wonderfully worded and insightful comment. I agree with Fujimoto’s editor; he truly understands a lot of the worries and care and fears of his generation, and he takes all of that and with either clearly bombastic or genuinely nuanced writing, he delivers something meaningful and oddly relatable.
Also, that last bit of trivia about the Italian translation of TCM left my mouth agape.
Happy to hear you comment on the track at 3:35. It's called "you were here" and it's also a favorite of mine! I feel the sound of the track completely embodies the uniqueness of the composer, Kensuke Ushio. The softness of the piano keys really reminds me of his work on A Silent Voice and Liz and the Bluebird (two of my favorite movies)!
OH yeah! He did do Liz and the Blue Bird. I do know him from A Silent Voice, and love his work on both films and Chainsaw Man!

The teaser at the end of the ep got me so hyped !!! Im so excited to see this character next season !!!
I believe Denji comes off as emotionless because of his nightmare-ish childhood that he is STILL going through, but in reality his emotional maturity is probably just a bit underdevolped as of now. I think back to scenes such as Denji leaving Aki an apple in the hospital as his own little ways of connecting emotionally with those around him. Its okay not to cry and its okay not to feel bad towards people who abused you for years. I just cant wait to see where his arc goes in the future because I see so much potential for his character.
Denji is definitely still have feelings and his humanity. Even in 12 episodes he never kill one single human. Katana-man gaslights Denji, when he's actually the one who killed human (his buddy) and cut them in half when he was fighting with Denji before

When I first saw the ghost devil, I couldn't understand why his neck was a flower.
But when I saw the scene where Aki walked away, it made so much sense.
It was very beautiful.

I wasn't sure if this was the finale or mid season finale going in, but that ending really hit me. I can't wait to see what that door is all about, it's in the intro and now in the ending.

The question being posed is simple: is Denji the type to accept greater risks for greater rewards, or to play it safe? From what we've seen, it seems obvious: Denji is a city mouse, through and through.

I just wanted to give a quick insight into what “easy revenge” means to me, and why it’s my personal favorite lesson from the story so far. Essentially Aki and many others have had it rough, the things that beat us down in life can seem insurmountable. It can feel like we will never move the mountain that we are up against, Aki can never get Himeno Back, you can’t undo the damage of smoking, you can’t make the fundamental problems of the world disappear overnight.
Therefore you have to get revenge by any means necessary, kick katana man in the nuts, quit smoking starting now, make one small change in your life to improve things.
I think the easiest revenge is to celebrate the small victories, you don’t need a big goal to be achieved. Just make a little progress each day and appreciate that you’re still here struggling forward.

Easy Revenge is like the alternative to the saying " success is the best revenge".
himeno gave herself for the whole of the ghost devil, so she essentially has been erased from existence as a whole. But ghosts overall are known to fullfil unfinished business like murders or revenge etc, so it returned the cig that himeno wanted to give to aki in the flashback.
The scene where Aki smokes Himeno's cigerette is a direct reference to another anime called FLCL. Tatsuki Fujimoto has stated that FLCL was an inspiration in his creation of Chainsaw man. I high recommend the show. Especially since its only 6 episodes long.
I can't believe 12 weeks just flew by like that 😭 Hopefully we can get season 2 next year. The girl at the end is a fan favorite for manga ppl, so looking forward to seeing her.

I really loved this adaptation! They nailed everything imo, brought this series fully to life, big credit to Mappa! After the ending scene I'm very excited for part 2!
Next season is gonna bring answers... but also even more questions. All I'll say is: Season 2 will be even better, even crazier, even more emotional. We're approaching peak Chainsaw Man.
Denji also saves the lady in the train right after getting told he didn't have a human heart. I think its shown that he does have a human heart, he just doesn't show it like how you might think like caring a lot when killing zombies or people dying. He does grieve over himeno like you said otherwise he wouldn't hold that contest, and that yakuza grandfather was a shit guy so why would you care about killing him lol. I loved your reactions to chainsawman, and I found your channel thru this anime and it was always fun seeing how you reacted to all the sad emotional scenes behind all the devils and blood and craziness.
Aki at the beginning of the series he saw devils as beings that could not have feelings, and right in this episode the ghost devil and others like power are basically his friends
15:24 actually in the manga, we could see the facial expressions of Denji clearer, it clearly shows that he is pondering about his feeling or rather the humanity in him when he being confronted by Katana men
I've always felt like Himeno's last smoke was her last gift to Aki in that Aki is fully driven by revenge in all aspects of his life. It has literally consumed him and time and time again he has sacrificed huge chunks of his life for that impossible goal. How do you kill something that can kill millions in a few minutes?
Now he has lost another person he cares about and I think Himeno understands that revenge is probably on his mind again. With whatever bit of Himeno is left in the Ghost Devil, I believe she gave him just one easy fight, one small piece of "easy revenge" as her last gift.
"Easy Revenge" means only chasing things in your grasp.

This finale gave me so many emotions but gave more me a random comfort at the end. Hopefully Kobe character gets more light the next season!
Something fun to think about is that the "easy" part is what burned off from the cigarette. It's a good signal for how things continue
in regards to Katana's comment about Denji's human heart. I believe it's there but he doesn't really know how to process his feelings like a normal person because going back to the life he had before, the only positive relationship he's ever had was with Pochita. It's become a theme with Denji throughout the series that he trivializes or oversimplifies his goals and his feelings. Like trying to process grief over the loss of a friend (Himeno) or getting that date with Makima because he doesn't really understand much of what was happening with him.
next season will be ridiculously insane, it will have one arc better than the other in a row. Let's say this first season was very calm compared to what's to come, you won't even have time to breathe
Watching this ending reminds me of the cover of chapter 79 in manga “living in the same house, like brothers and sisters ” , and a imaginary photo of Aki Power and Denji in an aquarium.

i wasn’t sure if the denji heart stuff was literal or not at first, but now i think its mostly just metaphorical now. Cuz there are times he has empathy and feelings. But because he grew up in such a neglectful environment, hes extremely detached from regular emotions. I relate to this a lot, since i grew up in a really bad environment so i have difficulty processing regular emotions. Its easy for me to understand why others feel stuff, but sometimes i honestly just dont know how to feel about or i just dont get why people act a certain way or cry or get angry or whatever else.

I’m surprised so many people didn’t know about «the country mouse and the city mouse ». Basically, it’s a fable where the country mouse gets invited to eat with the city mouse, so they both go to the city. Here, they can eat delicious food that’s way better than anything you can find in the country, so the country mouse thinks about moving in, but right when they’re in the middle of eating, a stray cat shows up and nearly eats them. They only survive by running away immediately. The country mouse is horrified and says the food isn’t worth it and it prefers the peace and quiet of the country even if the food is mediocre. The question asked at the end basically boils down to « do you prefer high risk and high reward, or playing it safe with small prize ? » it’s really interesting to ask this to Denji, since from the beginning, his whole source of happiness has been increased luxury, namely better food, but on the other hand, he has become less and less safe.

My prediction is that they do a movie for the next arc and then a season 2. Little bit too much left in Part 1 for another 12 episode season, so unless we get just a longer season 2, I don't see how they don't do a movie. I think that'd be fine, while I hate the wait for anime movies that we usually have, the next arc would work really well as one.
What an incredible journey in these 12 episodes!! For everyone who will wait for the anime to continue the story and don't want to read the manga, I recommend reading other amazing works by the Chainsaw Man author (Tatsuki Fujimoto). I highly recommend Goodbye Eri and Look Back
I'm truly gutted the sub didn't include the best line of the English dub, right before Katana Man gets finished off at 9:32, he says: "You put the dick in predictable! Went for my head like a diiiiiiiiiiiipshit!" it was so very much classic Denji troll antics and I loved it.
Also, your "BITCH!" moment when you thought they were cutting to another scene cracked me up to no end.
a lot of people will probably ask why the Ghost Devil gave Aki Himeno's cigarette, some might pass it off as plot armor or whatever, but if you're confused this is a light rundown
Ghosts, especially in movies are known for finishing unfinished business, like how most ghosts are victims of abuse, rape, murder, etc. Seeking revenge and the death of the ones who hurt them. The case for Aki is similar, with the Ghost Devil finishing Himeno's unfinished business with Aki, giving him the cigarette she promised to give him in his time of need. It's no different from the Snake's ability to swallow prey and spit it out because Snakes do that.
I think the door is the real side of real pochita maybe thats why everyone after his heart maybe real pochita really powerful even pochita said don't open the door maybe he is really powerful...OMG i really excited to know what happen in the next season i wish next season come out early

I'm upset that we only got 12 episodes. The first season only covers the beginning, introduces the characters and sets up for the upcoming season. The most interesting is ahead and now we have to wait a long time.

Season 1 really was the season of Himeno... I cried at that cigarette reveal, the music gets me so much every time.

Fujimoto's writing can often feel like he's flying by the seat of his pants, and yet he manages to do some extraordinary set-ups with long-term payoffs and consistent running themes.
The ghost devil couldn’t kill Akai. The show says contracts with devils are absolute, Hinemo’s deal was “she gave everything if the ghost devil saved Akai” not kill sword man but save Akai. Which is why it let him go.
Fujimoto inserts some unique, weird, rare, niche and foreign references all over his work. Especially CSMs main plot line, if you know, you know.
I wish they could stay happy like in the ending 😢

Regarding the ending:
I assume that the woman could be the Gun Devil who knows Denji because of the Chainsaw Devil.
I also assume this "behind the door"-moment is probably a memory of the Chainsaw Devil which reveal the connection between the Chainsaw Devil and the Gun Devil. That could give us the answer why the Gun Devil is so obsessed with Denji/Chainsaw. Maybe Chainsaw knows something about the Gun-Devil or did something to him.
I think the last scene is supposed to be exciting cuz it revealed the voice actor for that character.

I think the future devils new line is better. He’s a creepy silly guy and he chants “THE FUTURE RULES” and him just starting a contract with Aki just because he’s stoked to see an awesome death is a much clearer characterization.

The floors that Aki, Power, and Denji step off on seem to be intentionally assigned to each character. Aki gets off on floor 4, associated with death, fitting since it's the basis for his entire life experience. Power gets off on floor 7, which I think has a more roundabout explanation. Power is heavily associated with cats and 7 is a lucky number, making Power out to be a lucky cat. Meowy even looks like one a little bit. And Denji gets off on floor 13 because his entire life until recently had been a long string of misfortunes.

When I read the wrong subs that his death will "fucking rule", I just thought the Future Devil was sadistic af, so I'd still interpreted it as the worst kind of death. 😅
Also, my favorite CSM ost are "sweet dreams" (the one where Pochita united with Denji, and where Himeno sacrificed herself for Aki.) 😢and "kick ass!" (Denji being the Nut Devil to Aki, the barf kiss scene, and where Denji and Power being super smart) 😂

So. As a manga reader, I don't quite exactly remember what the meaning of "easy revenge" is, or if there even was a clearly defined reason. However, my interpretation of it based on what I've watched of the anime is that it feels like it's correlated to that earlier scene where Aki puts a piece of gum on that lady. "Easy Revenge". To me, it seems to be about taking the small wins where you can. Not letting yourself get pushed around.
The end of this arc is the beginning of PAIN. And Himeno senpai is best senpai.
