That kind of mindset actually won't lead to happiness in the long run. It's good not to dwell in sadness but he just pushes it aside and never processes those feelings. It can lead to a pretty bad emotional crash at some point in your life.

    • @DaggetSWG
      @DaggetSWG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

What you are explaining is kind of a "toxic positivity", where ignoring unpleasant thoughts or feelings is treated like a good thing, but it can actually keep you from being introspective and dealing with stuff in a healthy way. It can cause you to dismiss true emotional expression. Denji's flaw is wanting someone to tell him what he should do in difficult situations, so that he never has to feel responsible for the consequences of his actions. It's why he has so much trouble setting bigger goals, and why he'd rather set very small goals that aren't that important or consequential, because failing at those goals wouldn't matter very much. Kobeni is very similar to Denji in a way, in that she does what she is told instead of doing things for herself, but she seems to absolutely understand that she is being used and put into very bad situations because of her "cowardice" or "passive" nature, and she blames herself for letting others use her.

I love the deeper topics in this series. Denji really has no one who would cry for him right now. As long as he can eat and live he is pretty happy.
Aki crying hit so hard... it didn't even hit him instantly, he lit up the cigarette, and then everything just came flooding in..
These characters go through so much suffering and this is only the beginning of the series T_T

Ok, so Kishibe said he was a part of Special Division 1, right? So he too got under attack during the gun assassination scheme. He is also always drinking. The implication here is that the man dodged a literal bullet while drunk off his ass, yeah I won't be denying his claim as the strongest devil hunter.

Power's decision to say "Screw you guys,I'm going home" during the attack, only to cover her own ass by saying she was hungry is maybe her most Eric Cartman moment in the series,it's so funny. I like to imagine she was like Mac in that one Always Sunny episode about the storm, just sitting on the couch, eating ice cream and laughing about the massacre on the news LMAO (also around this part of the manga, Fujimoto explains in an extra chapter that although she's a huge coward, she WILL step on ants while screaming "BATTLE!" just to feel superior. The perfect woman.)
I really love the obvious parallel with the previous hospital scene of Episode 4. Whereas Aki pretended to be a hardass, but let his real intentions known by peeling the apples for Denji, him and Power don't even try to pretend they give a shit.
But on his way out Denji, for the first time, manages to empathize with him. And his inability to connect with the people around him breaks him. In a somber moment of realization,he even understands that he'd be able to walk off Makima's death. I love that scene of introspection so much,it's like despite being satisfied with the life he's been given, something in the back of his head is telling him that he deserves none of it,he's less than human.
...and then he just waves it off, because living in ignorance is so much easier than having to deal with your feelings. And that's exactly why he makes such a good hunter. And why Kishibe, with his alcohol-filled brain,is the best in the business, even when the graves of his fellow workers are in front of him.
But can we talk about Aki's breakdown? Fujimoto is just a master at these moments where no dialogue is used. If it wasn't clear by now, smoking in Chainsaw Man is a death sentence. It happened with the Yakuza in episode 1,then with Himeno, and now even Curse is telling Aki that his days are numbered. Fujimoto has the balls to say to the audience that there's no happy ending for this guy,but you'll still be crying when the inevitable happens. Damn.
One more parallel in the hospital scene is that,in the same way Aki told Denji to "speak in a more dignified way", Kurose here (the guy with the scar) speaks to him in a formal manner at some points, and at others he drops the facade and talks to him face-to-face to show how ticked off his self-destructive behavior makes him.
Another understated moment that I love is Denji and Power looking at the road in the night. It really shows that they're free spirits in nature, but the system has already made them believe,in one way or the other, that there's simply no life out there for them outside of the city. A town mouse should stay that, and never hope for something dfferent.
P.S.: Fujimoto tweeted out today that Himeno comes from the Aomori prefecture, the northernmost part of Japan's mainland...and it's a place well known for its apples. Ouch.

Genuinely loved your comment. It was thoughtful and rather insightful, especially considering the crazy amount of copy and paste “deep” comments going around on CSM reactions that offer nothing actually new or revealing to anyone with two brain cells. I’m a manga reader myself and I love how Fujimoto writes and sets things up, but even I wasn’t drawing comparisons to the previous hospital scene. All in all, it solidifies my long standing theory that Aki truly is the real heart of CSM Part One.

This episode shows how well-written CSW is :
    - We usually hear that vengeance consumes the avenger and that is a path with no turning point.
    - Aki is only motivated by a deep desire of vengeance and wants to kill the Gundevil at all costs.
    - In his seek for revenge, Aki contracted with a powerful devil that litterally consumes the major part of his future trying to kill a powerful Gundevil follower...for nothing.
    - Guided by his goal, Aki was not listening Himeno who just wanted to leave Public Safety with him to save him and to be with him.
    - Himeno was trying to save Aki from this path without peace but died saving him from an imminent death...from a Gundevil follower.
    - Now, Aki is now logically more engaged in vengeance than before.
    - Denji, who is an opposite character to Aki that, says that vengeance is depressing...not a philosophical antithesis of vengeance but a very simple and true statement as a very little child would say it (in a less rude manner)...and that shows how vengeance consumes people.
Most of stories (mangas, movies,...) fatally depicts vengeance as a positive goal...or save the avenger and provide a satistying alternative goal to the avenger (that is still vengeance but a bit less violent).
Aki is a cool dark-haired and fake cold-hearted guy with cool powers motivated by vengeance because of a violent loss like in several well-known mangas...but his life is litterally consumed (2 years left) by his thirst for revenge.

I read a comment on reddit about the apple which I agree on. The apple and the cigarette were shown side by side, indicating the choices Aki has: Either a healthy life (apple) when quitting the Devil Hunter Job or continuing to risk his life (cigarette) and potentially die even sooner. When he reaches for the cigarette, he made his choice clear. He was wavering when the cigarette fell out his mouth remembering Himeno but ultimately he didn't touch the apple. A healthy life with only two more years left to live isn't much to go for in his mind anyway I guess.

Makima is red flag incarnate. Nobody else even comes close to being as sketchy as her. I wouldn't trust her to get me a glass of water.
Power is just a wildcard that you can only barely rely on until the situation no longer benefits her, then she'll ditch your ass. Any kind of relationship with her outside of being buddies in a harmless situation is highly likely to fall apart.
Kobeni is just a walking disaster.
Kishibe on the other hand, while messed up in his own ways, seems to channel that toward something worthwhile and ultimately beneficial. His tactic here is kinda fucked up, but he's not just doing it for shits and giggles. He's training them to be capable fighters that can survive what would otherwise almost certainly lead to their demise.
Aki is basically just a big tsundere. (Light on the -dere.) He pretends to only care about revenge, but he has the most genuinely good heart of anyone there.

And it's sad that Denji, as you've mentioned, haven't formed strong enough bonds to feel empathy for anyone yet, maybe except for Pochita. But, at least, he is aware enough that something might be wrong or missing in his life. And considering the life he had, it makes sense. I believe the apple is symbolizing the fruit that gives the knowledge of good and evil from the Bible. Denji and Power have eaten from it but are in a state of being where they aren't really bothered about ethics. Aki has not partaken, which I think is indicating that his quest for revenge is overriding his sense or morality, like he's choosing revenge despite the ethical implications. Some vague support for that would be him ignoring Himeno's requests to go private and not being overly bothered by the letters. This interpretation is tepid, but I think fits a little. The loneliness idea is pretty good too.

Funny, I read the apple thing a bit differently. Denji chastizing Powy for running away, therefore no apple for her, but then leaving one apple for Aki, it sounds like he (Denji) unconsciously's sending a warning message : you only get one last chance for letting Himeno die. Which is enforced by the curse telling him he only has 2 years to live.

The ending used a technique called "rotoscoping," I think. In the past, actual film footage of something real was taken and, frame by frame, the images were drawn by hand. These days I'd imagine that a similar technique can be achieved through an AI using CGI over actual footage, though I'm just guessing here.

The fight with the Eternity Devil and Katana Man "surviving" the Curse Devil informed us that Hybrids are essentially immortal. As long as they have access to blood to consume or is able to rev their engine or have it revved, they can revive. It was why Himeno kept watch over Denji while he was fighting the Eternity Devil for three days straight instead of resting like the others. If Denji dies, she has to use the Ghost Devil's arm to rev Denji's chainsaw heart back to life.

My guess is the apple represent the normal life and moving on that Himeno really hoped for Aki, but instead he chooses Cigarettes that reminds him of the guilty from Himeno's death and all his trauma.

Denjis mental and emotional growth is stunted at a child level of understanding. Thats why hes very basic with wants, almost like a child. He was never let to have a normal childhood, so his brain tries to be a child on its own to enjoy itself.

Denji and Aki are really polar opposites. Denji copes with detachment while Aki can't ever let go (which is why he couldn't give up on revenge even with the chance to live a normal life with Himeno). Then there's Power...she doesn't need coping mechanisms because she's the best.

I didn’t think about it till u said sumn. But I think if the apple represents something it may be him standing out from the rest of the devil hunters. Like “bad apple” but in this case “good apple”. Because we see that aki isn’t necessarily normal but out of everyone he seems to be the most empathetic yet is still willing to be a devil hunter. He cried for everyone who’s died around him. So I see it as he’s the apple that doesn’t belong at least in the same way everyone else does. And denji and power took the remaining of the apples while we know that they are where they belong as devil hunters.

  • @NinjaPopeXue
    @NinjaPopeXue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Regarding the camera focus on the apple and its potential symbolism, I do like your take on it representing Aki's loneliness. Personally, I interpreted it as a symbol of his last remaining connection(s) in Public Safety - Denji and Power, because it's something that Denji specifically left behind for him. Kurose even asks "are you gonna eat that apple?" which could be taken by the viewer as "are you going to stay in this miserable existence to look after Denji and Power or will you live your last two years quietly in peace?" The camera also pans to the apple when Kurose says "you should take a closer objective look at yourself" and when Himeno's sisters walks in. It may suggest that Aki's true intention for staying is to preserve the bonds he has made with the people around him (the apple), and not his stated goal of revenge. This is probably something that not even he himself realizes.

I think the apples are representing what Aki has left to give. He had a full basket, now he only has one.
Aki's situation is a pretty nasty sunk cost dilemma, in that while he knows Himeno sacrificed her life so he could live his - he only has two years remaining and the thing that spurred him to get into devil hunting was seeking vengeance for his family by taking down the Gun Devil.
Regardless of which choice he makes he will be disappointing someone.
