  • In this video essay, I analyze the 2003 family comedy Daddy Day Care through a socialist lens. I argue that the film, despite being lighthearted on the surface, contains undertones of socialist ideology in its portrayal of childcare and gender roles. The movie follows Charlie and Phil, two fathers who lose their jobs and start their own makeshift daycare center. I examine how the communal spirit of their daycare represents socialist values of cooperation and shared responsibility. As the fathers work together to provide childcare outside traditional family structures, the film suggests alternative approaches to parenting and gender norms. I also explore how the competitive capitalist daycare across the street serves as an antagonist, indicating the flaws of free market ideology when applied to child welfare. While not an explicitly political film, Daddy Day Care subtly promotes a socialistic model of shared burdens and rewards when tackling work, family, and gender issues. This video essay illuminates the progressive themes hidden within this mainstream comedy.
