Otis,… I gotta say not only are you a great song writer / singer, you have an uncanny ability to interview and film the most nicest and interesting folk in the music business. This interview is another great one. Some of these great folk we would never know about without you. Thanks so much. Peace
I was fortunate to get to know Lance when I lived in Nashville and worked for Deaton Entertainment. Lance is top shelf and knows absolutely everyone in "town". Thanks Otis, You're the man!
This is great! “Oh my God, Sam is playing on my song!” This is the thoughts of every aspiring songwriter who knows anything about the history of music or country music. What a blessing!
So well said! For us songwriters who have zero ambition for any kind of monetary gain ( not expecting songwriting to pay any bills) Appreciation and connection to the art are the greatest reward. Also having your song get the treatment by real, and I mean Real deal professional level artists and musicians, that would be the mountain top for me.
I have always really enjoyed John Denver and John Prine as song writers and performers. It’s so cool to hear John Denver acknowledged John Prine’s talent.
These stories being recorded here among the best that artists of all stripes can gather and be appreciated. The skill of Lance Cowan to tell and write them are diamonds in the rough that can so easily be over looked, but are still found in the gem store at an Otis Gibbs platform. Writing and photo journalists are among the unsung and under appreciated workers I have known; it led me to make a career as a Union line mechanic. The photojournalist I started with was the NBC videographer murdered at Jonestown and by then I decided turning wrenches gave me the time to just be a writer with a simpler need to perform, even if alone. ☮
Well thanks Otis and thank you Lance. That was a great way to start my day. Now I have some internet investigating to do tracking down some of those mentioned here.
“If one person comes up to you after you play and says that one song really meant something to them when you’re done playing, that’s really all that matters.” You will not find a better quote or joy from a songwriter than this. This is the entire point. Sure we want to make millions. But this is the reason for everything we do.
I never saw her play live or met her, but there was something about Nanci Griffith that stole your heart and made you fall in love with her. She was really beautiful and in every video I've seen, was a kind sweet soul. I'll bet a million men can attest to the same effect.
Nancy tells the story of writing Love at the Five and Dime--do a TH-cam search on this: "British guitarist breaks down Nanci Griffith's TOP level guitar ability"
Lest we forget, the late Jim Bessman was the best friend most roots music artists had in NYC as a music writer for Billboard, Cashbox and Variety among others..
Hello Otis. Love your content. Wanted you to know that you had a profound impact on one of the "Camp WTF" attendees, who is a close personal friend, and his summary of complements about you came down to three words...." The Real Thing ." Love from Savannh GA!
intersting this is not the first person uve chatted with in the music biz who calls musician artists rightly so while hes right most of the musicians if they ever refer to themselves as artists feel badly when they shouldnt and speaking of Validation....part of the title of my comunity radio show is in the Rhtyhm of Threes meaing i play sets of 3 or 6 or 9 sometimes then talk to a guest if i have one or the voices in my head lol love the format and laslty echoing the last sentiment i got to mentor with eons ago author MAdison Smart Bell who said, esp in the writing world, but in any if one person praises says they get etc ur whatever...poem book sotry song artfart whatever, thats a complete validation!

Your comment is not far from what Woody Guthrie might have written. Not every song writer ends up seeking a Tin Pan Allay career, thank goodness. ☮
said he was sorry to go off on a tangent when telling his story, Tangents is what Otis brings out in everyone. Thanks Otis
