What a treasure! Damn I miss the 70’s! I had friends who were musicians and when we all got together we’d pass the guitar around and everyone would play and sing. I feel so blessed to have been around during the late 60’s and 70’s which was music like no other decades and will stand the test of time. We had talented musicians and poets who became icons. Steve Goodman and John Prine really complemented each other, Steve was a more accomplished musician but Prine was so simplistic and had the most unique sound and the greatest stories. After all these years John Prine’s music is with me everyday, on some of my darkest days all it takes is a Prine song to lift me up! God bless these two wonderful guys, I’m sure they are laughing, picking and entertaining gods angel band!

This is from Gene Shay's "Folklore" radio show on Sunday nights. I listened faithfully to Gene through several radio stations since pre-1970. How I miss that show! RIP Gene, Steve Goodman, and John Prine!

This is a fun show, especially having seen them 1 hour earlier in concert. I listened to this that night.
They both played the Academy of Music earlier that night. It was in the club room in an intimate setting of round tables sparsely set about the room. I didn't even know who they were when I attended. It was a suprize and wonderful music.
I came home and was just getting ready for bed. Gene Shay (I believe was the host from WMMR) intro'd these guys. I quickly threw a tape in and recorded the whole thing. I burned the tape out listening to it.
I was a fan ever since. Rest in Peace John & Steve.

@@MichaelDoherty1981 Me too Mick. I got to know Steve pretty well when he came a few times to Athens, GA in the early ‘70s. He even came out to my house and jammed after the local coffee shop he was playing closed for the night. Sometime around ‘77 or so, Steve was playing in the Great Southeastern Music Hall in Atlanta one Saturday night. My wife and I went to see him and the three of us went to breakfast together at about 2AM. Steve was so talented and a truly nice guy. However, like the song says... I want to go to heaven, but I don’t want to go tonight.

Steve Goodman did a special show during the 1970’s for 3 or 4 years on Easter Sundays on WNEW-FM with Vince Scalis. After the station changed formats in the early 1980’s. Vince was given these tapes among others preserved the tapes but they weren’t in good shape. A technique was developed by 3M to revive the tapes and these were among the earliest tapes to go through this method. The result of this is the “Easter Tapes” that is available from Red Pajamas Records.
I heard at least two of these shows live. Going up from the dinner to hear these shows in my room and enjoy it. Steve said that he was there to see his MIL, but I think he was there to have either treatments or checkup for his Leukemia. He was among the first to discover the positive effects of marijuana on the harsh effects of the treatments.
