What exactly is the leaf used? It is SCREW PINE OR UMBRELLA PINE.Generally called KEDKI . Thazam in Tamil,Kaitha in Malayalam. It's flower is highly aromatic. It's fruit called pandas fruit is like PINE apple or Jack fruit combo with beautiful red inside. The leaves some 6 feet long has 3 edges full of thorns in rows.The leaves are either steamed or held 8ver open fire to soften.and long tape like spouts are rolled. Like palm leaves these leaves were used like writing material by budhist monks. The split preserved leaves are used to make mats or baskets or other handicrafts. Mats used to be so long lasting that like grass mats they were very popular till 1960s. ( THAZA PAYA in South kerala as mix of tamil) Green leaves are used to make cheap baskets to sell vegetables, totally organic . It grows near water bodies though it needs very less water. Used as fencing shrubs because of its thorns whuch can give pain and they are like hooks as in rose. Flower petals are used in flower garlands as the aroma lingers for days even after flower gets dried.Rest of flower is used as vegetable by frying!!
