- This front-loader washing machine was overpacked, and caused a rip in the door gasket. Replacement gaskets cost well over $100.
Here is the $6 tube of polyurethane sealant: amzn.to/3lgNprz
If it's out of stock, this product is identical but a different color: amzn.to/3lg9vP2
And here's a cheap caulking gun: amzn.to/3fDfJU3
I get a small cut if you use my links above and it's free for you, hope they help!
It's been over 5 years and still hasn't leaked a drop!

I had the exact same thing happen to me with this gasket. I searched for how to replace the gasket so I knew what to do after receiving a new gasket. If only I had found your video sooner. It would have saved me over $100 AUD on a new one.
Great job by the way. 5 years is remarkable for such a fix.
@@davidpalmer9780 thanks for reminding me i need to do this today lol

5½ years later and this video is still coming up clutch. Thanks so much, this is exactly what I needed, worked like a charm and saved me a bunch of money.
Just fixed mine the other day and it is now working leak free! I did make a small mistake and wanted to let everyone else know: make sure that you keep the wax paper flush with the existing surface, or smooth it back down after application. I think I pushed it out slightly while applying the sealant and ended up with the polyurethane curing slightly proud of the surface. This caused the original seal to have a non-contact situation with the washer door and water leaked initially during my first two loads. After applying pressure with the door closed for a while, I was able to get the surface to be flush again and now it's working. But worth paying attention to if you're going to try this! Thanks!
I'm a Japanese women lives in Australia. Let me tell you my journey. First I contacted Samsung and I was told to contact local agent then I did. But no call back so looked up on eBay and found replacement rubber seal. I ordered and started to look for how to change rubber seal. Then Boom 💥I found you finally ! I cancelled eBay order and did exactly what you were shown to us and great success ! Thank you for your amazing video 🙏you saved me at least $200 and my time 😆
Thank you for letting me know! Happy to help!
This is the only method which works. It saved me $200.
I tried bicycle tyre repair kit, I also tried sealant putty but nothing worked except this method. Thanks Adam!
This worked so satisfyingly well! I'm a total DIY amateur and even with my lack of housework ability I managed to follow these instructions and replicate the same results. I had to trim it and make it smooth at the top to achieve perfect results but I'm three hours and four loads in and not a single drop leaked since a trim. Love it.
Steven you made my night! It's pretty thrilling that putting together a quick video a few years ago can be helpful to so many people for so long. Thanks for taking the time to let me know it worked!
@@adamdport I'm not usually one to publicly appraise yet this has saved me a good bit of time and money whilst also getting me some brownie points with the in laws. So thank you very much for taking the time to make the video.
You guys are really making me wanna try on my washer but 2 days without washing for the curing ( I got 2 young kids ) is gonna be a stretch.
Btw you mentioned that the tear happens because of overloading, is that usually the cause?
@@ngadam3126 same here. Here's what I did. I washed a weeks worth of clothes for the family and managed the leak with a plastic disposable glove in the door and waterproof mattress cover & towel on the floor. Then I went for the fix!

Thanks Adam, it worked great. Im in the UK, and used baking paper (grease proof) and it worked fine, (if not better there were no residual threads of tape) and used Sika Sikaflex EBT+ All-Weather Sealant Grey 300ml. This polyurethane was in grey too so matches the inner tube colour quite well. I left it to dry for a full 48 hours and it was still sticking a little to the door when you opened it, but stayed in place and after a dozen washes now it still in place, not sticking, and nice and flexible, and no leaks! The whole job cost under 8.00 pounds and took about 30 minutes to complete!
Thank you. I came looking for someone that had done it from the uk. Life saver.
Yeah I'm from the UK too and about to give it a go tomorrow! Thanks for the tips
This is why I love the internet. My seal just got ripped by so something in the load and after half an hour looking at new seal costs and the pain of fitting them I've arrived at this. Even better that I'm in the UK and found this comment! Off to Screwfix to get some of the Sika stuff 😁
Mines still going strong, same seal...
Hi Salman, How's the repair holding out? Just repaired ours using Sika Sikaflex EBT+ together with rubber tape to reinforce behind the tear. I would have happily bought a new gasket but they are no longer made. See how it hold out or it will be a new machine!
Just saved $160 on part and $150 labor, thank you so much
U could of bought a new washer paying that .but thankfully this video saved the day
I did this 5 years ago and it's still holding up. A few drips of water escape out every wash cycle but it's much less painful than a new seal $$$.
Thank you for the update! I was wondering how often this repair would be needed if I don’t get a new gasket
Thank you!!!! Saved me $150 plus labor!!
It worked perfectly. I had just spent $180 replacing the pump and could not justify spending more. $6.00 for the sealant was an awesome deal!
& Now?
It costs $22 for gasket and $5 labour charges in India. But still it is still expensive here for many of us.
I had the exact same tear, but already ordered a new gasket when I saw this video. Replacing that gasket was not difficult for me to do but I would have tried your method had I seen this video first. Thanks for sharing.
Hey there, where did you get a new gasketml? Would love to replace mine
@@fullmetal2424 theres plenty on ebay for door rubber seal spare. make sure you get your Model number correct though
Thank you for sharing this tip. To replace the part alone it would've cost over $170.00. Adam, this worked perfectly so far. Thanks again!
Works so far, thanks!! I think the gasket had been leaking slowly for years. I applied it at night after the latest laundry room flood, then added a little more to it the next morning to make sure it was high enough. After 3 days, the wax paper pulled off without the residue seen in the video. Note that the tube looks different than in the video, but the amazon picture looks the same as what I bought in May, 2022. I wish I had looked at the amazon link before trying to find it at Lowe's, it was in the caulking section, kind of by the construction adhesives, not the roofing section. Also note the unopened shelf life of these tubes are 12 months, and of course, there is no date or best by date on the tube.
I did this fix last week and can now use the machine again--thanks for the video. Note on my experience--I used aluminum foil as the tape backing--big mistake. The roofing sealant sticks to metal. I realized 2 1/2 days into the curing that the foil needed to be removed which I did, and then back filled the cratered sealant, and smoothed it with plastic knives to match the surrounding gasket angle. I let it cure another 5 days and all is well with the machine now. The roofing sealant bonded to the original gasket and is flexible and forms to the washer door to seal properly. The most important thing was to have a flat surface where the new seal makes contact with the door, and overlap the fix in the back for strength.
7 Years after that video still helping people save money 🤑💰😂❤ Thank you
It worked! I had a 2 inch slit at the bottom of the gasket. I applied the sealant to the slit and waited 24 hours. The next day i cut a small section of a rubber bicycle inner tube and applied more sealant, applied the rubber patch and applied more sealant. After 3 days of curing.......NO LEAKS!!! Thanks!
Similar hole in my daughter’s machine. I followed the instructions but I couldn’t find any grease proof paper so I followed a couple of other tips and used baking paper. It peeled off easily. Small leak the first two times and then like some others said, it moulded into shape and now works a treat. Daughter was quoted over AUD$100 for the seal and $200 to fix. So this was the best tip ever.
"Thank you very much! We have this problem now, washing for a family of 10 (yes, 10!) and we tried some silicone designed for wet/dirty areas, but it didn't grip to the gasket. I'm going to get some of this stuff asap! I appreciate it!
I just did the exact same repair (thank you) It was almost the same tear to a tee and in the same location. I did have an issue with the blue painters tape so I had to use duct tape. I also would recommend letting it dry for at least 3 days before taking the tape and wax paper off and then letting it dry another 3 days if you can wait as I found the wax paper side still tacky. But all and all it did work very well and not even a drip was seen...
Such a great video, thanks for this. I had tried (unsuccessfully) sealing a tear using shoe goo but this worked perfectly. I removed the wax paper after about 36 hours and it came off clean.. Just had to trim the edge like you did in the video. I waited about 72 hours before doing the first wash
Just another thanks add. Carried this out on our 10.5KG Panasonic door seal on Friday. It had a largish 2½" tear at the bottom. After trimming up the damaged section, I used SIKA 291 Marine adhesive sealant to patch. 48 hours later, did an initial 15 minute leak test wash. From flooding the laundry floor with the failed seal to no leaks with the repaired one. Working as well as a new seal AFAIC. The Mrs. then put 8 successive large loads through the machine that day. I couldn't stop her. She was in a washing frenzy. Another 2 loads the next morning. I think this repair will outlast the machine! AUD$15 instead of AUD$500-$600 if I'd had a professional repairman in to supply and fit a new door seal. Two thumbs up.
Hi. What material did you use for cleaning the leaking spot before applying sika 291? Also how is it working now?
@@yadwinder2k 1. Can't recall. If anything, probably methylated spirits which if you're in the USA you call denatured alcohol.
2. Haven't touched it. Still working leak free. AFAIC other than cosmetically it's a functional as a new seal. The repair remains integral with the seal.
I suspect it will outlast this machine. = ]
@@theblytonian3906 Thanks.
Excellent job, ill keep this fix in mind (I refurbish washing machines as a former service engineer)
Heres a quick tip for you if this does fail at some point :-) if its a small tear (large one do the same as you did in this video first), you can turn 90% of gaskets upside down, just so long as the gasket doesn't connect directly to the dispenser drawer or any other piping. Usually they are just the rubber seal with nothing else connecting. They have a marker to tell you wish way is up, because there is little drain holes at the bottom. If your doing it as a repair then just block these holes and drill new drain holes at the new bottom to stop water pooling, obviously check where your drilling as it needs to be draining the water into the plastic tub and not your floor haha.
So turn it upside down, drill the new drain holes, and that sealant you have there is nifty stuff, so just block the old drain holes at the top with that (although I would be surprised if water ever came out of them unsealed, as they are in a fold, and water level is obs no where near the top of the door, so only on spin cycles when waters being sprayed around would it have a chance, but because of the fold I would imagine it would never happen, still if you have silicone or your nifty stuff, squirt some)
Good video mate, will like it :)
jason hounsell I
jason hounsell I have a maytag maxima x front loader. No rips or tares but it's loose. And water leaks out of it in the front. Is there anyway to tighten it. I can't afford 210.00 for a new bellow
Hey, excellent idea. How do it turn it upside down?
In order to turn it upside down you have to pretty much take everytjing apart as if you were gonna replace it so much easier to patch than rotate
@@TAGGdinc For the majority you don’t have to strip, some older Zanussi ones you do. Most can be done just taking the lid off and ones like Samsung you do take the front panel off however it takes 2 minutes - a little longer if it’s your first time.
The tip is if you don’t want to replace it, which might be the only option - this is a dirty fix that can be done on the spot to get the machine running with nothing bought.
Our front loader had a tear in almost the exact same place as yours. So happy I found this video - bought the sealant and used it as you demonstrated and it's fixed! Have done several loads now and not a leak to be seen.
Everyone's does... Including mine. Its just a bad design that they all have.
How's it holding up 2 years later?
@@UncleLawrence91they probably design their machines to fail this way. It’s called “planned obsolescence”. There’s a lightbulb in a museum in California called Centennial Light, which has been lit for over 100 years now - this is often used as an example to prove manufacturers can make things that don’t break easily, when they want to. Landfills are full of rubbish that’s not recyclable because companies design things to break after a while, so they could sell some more. By the way, unbreakable goods do exist - they’re called “military grade”. When they sell products to the military then they have a much higher life expectancy

Thanks, I'll be sure to buy a battle-hardened military grade washing machine fresh from the front lines.
Adam, thank you for this video! I just fixed mine 2 weeks ago with some EPDM seal I already had at home, and it hasn't leaked since! You saved me a lot of money and effort
Have to say a huge thanks, not that I saved money because I already bought a new seal (£23 - $35) but when I went to put it on my just over a year old machine I noticed that the inner retaining clip would be a hassle to undo and I'd waited over 2 weeks for the seal from Italy.
So 3 washes in and I'm well chuffed.
Thanks.
Considered buying a new seal, but for some reason my only option is $200+ with no after market options available. Really appreciate this video. Couldn’t for the life of me decide on what sort of sealant/glue to use.
You sir, have created a magnificent legacy. Fixed mine yesterday. Thank you!
I used a product called multi bond and I got it in grey, let it set for 24 hours, removed the tape and baking paper, then left it for another 12 hours and it works and not 1 drop of water leaks out. I am having a new one fitted under warranty, but this works really well if you dont have any guarantee or that. Thanks Adam a great tip :-)
$100 closer to the million since I had a tube of polyurethane sealant at home. Thanks, Adam! I am hoping that it will work on any other part of the door gasket.
This worked for us too using the grey Saka weather seal compound. Another tip is to get a smooth finish on the front of the rubber for a better seal to the door is to wet sand the rubber.
You'll need a sanding block and a spray bottle with warm water.
You can use 400 grit for this and just sand left to right spraying the warm water on the rubber and the sanding block.
Hi, want to check is it good for long term solution!
I'm going to try that. Thank you 😊
Thanks for this. I could have had an engineer come around and fit a new seal, it's not so much the cost but the phoning around and then the waiting around. I used a grey Sika PU (while I was waiting for it to be delivered I 'fixed' the seal by jamming a bit of plastic cut out of a cat food pouch between the seal and the door- it worked tolerably well)
Genius, thank you SO much. I love hacks like this. You saved my husband and I a few hundred dollars in repair!

This was the additional information I was looking for, as to how long the fix holds. Even if it was only once every two years still saved a ton of money!
Our washer drier rubber boot is $300 roudup. thanks you help us save that money. I just replace the water pump for the third time but it is better than buying a new washer or calling a repair person.💪👊
Did this a few weeks ago on my 21 year old Kenmore he3. I used parchment paper. Saved several hundred over either getting a gasket or buying another washer. Had a bucket under door while looking at options. Left it under door just in case and has never gotten another drop of water.
I got a quote for $400 to replace seal. Mine has a dent in it that looks like the shape and size of zipper pull. Will fill in with sealant and see if that works. Initially my spring wire popped off and flooded basement. Had to replace ceiling tiles. Just fixed dishwasher with TH-cam video by doing a very simple " reset". Thanks for making this!
Mine just broke this past weekend. I had already ordered the replacement gasket when I found this video but I'm going to try this fix first anyway. I can't wait!!! It looks like the hardest part will be waiting the week for it to cure.

This worked well for me. I live in philippines, and I personally could not care less if the door seal leaked, tile floors, drain nearby, but wife was bitching so figured I would give this a try. Was not about to spend 120 dollars for a door seal for a few drips, they evaporate here in an hour or so. Anyhow after some hard looking to even fine polyurethane sealant, not readily available here, I found some for 12 dollars a tube!!! It works great, Thanks so much for this tip. I now have enough sealant to last me thee rest of my life, but this is a great tip
Randy DeVolld hello from upstate NY! Glad it worked for you! The stuff’s great-I’ve used it to patch rips in my hot tub cover, as general purpose glue, and even to keep the elements out of a rust spot on my car. Keep it handy!
Worked for me but with DAP Gutter and Drain spouts. Not black but white sealant. Thanks for your idea man.
Thanks for the video, good idea. I would suggest trying Parchment paper instead of wax paper as Parchment paper uses silicone as it's non-stick coating and might work better than wax paper. It is also available at most stores in the cooking section, even dollar stores carry it.
Thanks for the tip!
Parchment worked perfect, no sticking whatsoever 🎉
You just made me $150 richer lol, great job on the video man. Properly done and great advice!

lol good save man. I see in your comments your fix lasted longer then my original seal did lol. Mine ripped at 11 months old. Gonna go give this a shot. Thanks!!
Thanks for this. - I used aluminium kitchen foil instead of wax paper and sanitary silicon which I spread far beyond the break on the inside of the seal, then I applied a re-enforcing scrim of plastic net (cut from a bag lemons came in from the supermarket) and then a second layer of silicon. Left 48 hours. The foil came off clean and leak fixed. So far so good.

You are awesome! I love your style, it’s the kind of stuff I do, with a similar process, but less success sometimes. I’ve got the same tear and will give it a shot. Thanks for the inspiration!
Did it work for you? And if so how has it held up?
I used Permatex 82180 and parchment paper. No leaks! It is currently cold and humid. I set a fan over the washer overnight and it appeared to dry. I pulled the tape off out of excitement. I still waited 3 days before using.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I don’t mind having to buy a new seal and replace but we have a small laundry with a dryer stacked on top of the washer and a fridge beside them. No room to pull the whole front of the machine off to replace.
This solution worked great for our front loader! Thanks for the video!

Brother, u just saved me $150 plus!
+Earl Shy Glad to hear it! It's comments like these that make making videos worth it :)
Loved this video ! They wanted to charge me just over £200 🤣
Great video and it fixed my tear successfully. If I had to do this again, I would not use the product shown at 0:12. I did and it was too gummy and took too long to dry and is not tough enough in my opinion. I would just use a clear silicone. Also, I put too much behind the tear region and so the washer door would not remain closed by the latch. I had to grind it back down - very messy. Build up the original seal profile but keep it thin. In my washer, the design of the door window was conical and so tightly engaged the seal all the way around. Placing a big gob at the bottom ruins this. These are my two suggestions. Good luck!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Silicone does not have the adhesion strength necessary for this. The polyurethane sealant does take a long time to cure, but if you're patient it's the best stuff for the job. It's meant to last under harsh conditions for decades. Everything else you mentioned is crucial info for the next guy though, thanks again!

After finding out a replacement seal is £50 from Bosch and labour to install it is £99, I decided to try an 'alternative' solution. So I tried this fix and Hey Presto, no more leak...for now. Cured within a few hours although I didn't test the washing machine until the following day. Cheers 👍
