Erica's Reality Rules - there is no pat answer for each person going through decluttering. The pressure to feel like you decluttered and the "perfect" homes you see on TH-cam or articles you read can derail you, making it worse for you to feel like you are accomplishing anything. Do you bring items back to homeschool trading and do you eventually donate items? I have taken pictures of items I love, if I didn't have an outfit in pictures to remember and enjoy the memories. Who here wants to sit around a table and just chat with this wonderful lady! ☕☕ You so speak to me from the first video I watched. Now to the fun - LOVE your hair and Andy thumbs up so funny. Yes, wordy...sorry...Happy Saturday!
I had a major stash of art, craft, gardening and sewing stuff, plus bins that belonged to my grown children when I decided to downsize to a senior apartment. The decluttering began. I have been on my decluttering journey for 8 years now. I have learned to shop mindfully, and acknowledge that I don’t need stuff to be happy. I don’t claim to be a minimalist, but I am very organized, still identifying things that I don’t need and make an occasional donation run. It is videos like yours that encouraged me and kept me motivated and mindful. Thank you for your kind words and thoughtfulness.
I'm currently decluttering using the minimalist game... I first thought it would take two months tops..... Oh boy.....not even close! But I have started enjoying the process. I can't wait to have a clutter free home. I like these rules and when they don't work. Nice ideas
You are describing me in your “2 minute rule” description. I have ADHD and I do this unconsciously all the time and then all of the sudden I stop and look around and realize I’ve started 10 tasks and completely NONE 😅. I have to constantly tell myself, “FINISH THIS TASK FIRST”. The struggle is real!
Erica! I LOVE your hair, and I LOVE, LoVE, LOVe your new house opening! How did you get that house drawing?? This was your MOST professionally done video so far. GREAT editing and aesthetic
I love how you explain when these rules need to be broken. I think these “rules” should really be called guidelines. They really are just be prompts or questions to ask yourself for when you are on the fence about letting something go versus a hard a fast “rule”. Thank you for making this video. Look forward to the next one!
I heard someone say think of your things, like your kitchen gadget clutter, like they are employees. You hired them to do a job, but if you no longer need that done, time to get rid. This was a good video. I like that want less…hmmm..
Nice to hear you discuss the 20/20 rule. I have heard this so often and it only makes me think "How rich are these minimalists?" 20 dollars/euro is a lot of money. That's about half a week worth of groseries for us. Now on the other hand, 20minutes availability only covers stuff I can buy at the supermarket, since the rest is at least an hour trip away 🤣
I've heard the $20/20 rule more for items that you haven't used and don't plan to use but could still be used if a series of events happen. For items that are making your daily life more difficult and have a very low probability of ever being used by you. I have an old broom that I hate using, so I always use my better one. With this rule I could get rid of the crappy one I hate using but keep because if my other one breaks I could use the one I don't like. What are the chances that if my better one breaks that I'll actually use the one I hate using?
I just went through all of our homeschooling items. That season in our life is over and wow how many memories came flooding back as I held each book, manipulative, poster etc.. It took me several months for me to process each thing. It was hugely rewarding to know those things were going to families who will use them and the financial blessing that those families don’t have to purchase those items! The rest went to Goodwill. Now I’m repurposing our space into an art area. It’s given me something to look forward to and the space not feel so empty. Thank you for your videos! It’s been 4 years on this minimalism journey for me as well and I’m still learning too! God bless you and your family. 😊
Such a clever idea to present the value of specific rules & then to present the value of breaking each one. It really helps us understand the WHYs of the processes. You're wonderful, Erica. BTW, I'm considering doing another 100-walk challenge, which you inspired me to do two summers ago. It was the first goal I set for myself that I ever actually achieved. I posted about my walks on my Facebook page for accountibility & was surprised by all the support I received from friends & family that way. The reason it worked for me is the absence of rules--no specified duration or intensity of the walks & no deadline, only the freedom to do something good for ourselves. Thanks for that, you rebel.
Hair, very pretty. You think things through so thoroughly. I have followed you from the beginning, and am so impressed with your journey. Have you ever shared what your career was prior to children? I've wondered if it has helped with application of going from chaos to such organized living. Blessings!
I use rule #1 the most as it's simple and doesn't allow for justification or arguing. The rule also eaves money and the tendency to impulse buy. I have certain areas in my home that still need more decluttering so I break the rule by adding to the amount that must be decluttered if I want to bring a new item in. My wardrobe is one of those areas. If I want a new pair of shoes for instance, I must get rid of 3 pair of shoes. I find it rewarding to declutter 1 for 3 or 1 for 2, and have noticed that the items I bring into my life have become intentional and multifunctional. I really appreciate the content you bring to us, Erica. The information you share is so practical and easy to apply. You truly have the gift of teaching as well as the gifts of empathy and encouragement. Thank you for bringing us along in your journey.
Love that you made this video. I have often thought that the under $20 minute under $20 rule also doesn’t work for people who don’t have the privilege of time or money. If it’s an item that gets broken once or twice a year and needs to be replaced, not everyone has the privilege of shopping time, an Amazon prime subscription, or an extra $20. There are definitely times that this is true for me. And yet the decluttering journey has been essential. That said, I think it’s a great guideline, and not taken too literally, is super helpful at making decisions about decluttering, because it does make me ask the right kind of questions of myself, whether I need a back up of the thing or not. ❤ Lol. I paused the video to make this comment, and when I went back to the video, pretty much said the same thing as me right after!🤣🥰
Yes, sometime it is a huge hassle to go pick out something like a dress for the occasional event (on a deadline at that!) when I could simply keep one or two hanging in the closet!
Excellent Erica!! Some of my favorite rules 😀 have been making serious effort to use the two-minute rule as often as I possibly can. It's made such a difference in the tidiness of my apartment. Keeps the piles from growing into giant mess mountains - dishes, paperwork, laundry, etc
U r the sweetest, Erica! The way that U share "Food 4 Thought" 💭 always brings Joy! ..... And that's because U r so Honest n Real! Ur videos r greatly appreciated! Luv Ur channel! Blessings 2 U n Ur sweet family! 👍💞✝️😘
I have a lot of sentimental clutter. I have heard other TH-camrs say it is OK to let the item go as you have the memories but having gone through periods of stress and now dealing with perimenopause the memories are no longer as easily accessible. Having that key chain or pen or mug or photo is a prompt that helps bring those memories back.
Every time I hear that advice I think "haven't you ever heard of dementia?" Keeping too much is an encumbrance, but getting rid of everything may not be any better. It will take time and patience to find out what is just right.
I love these rules and when to break them. I know everyone is saying it and I am too but your hair looks fabulous. Have a great weekend. Mary, Joes wife 🙇♀️👏💪🙏👍💐
I use to feel guilty when it comes to donating stuff that cost me a lot of money, but now I think of it as sunk cost aka the money is already gone. It sucks, but you just learn about what not to buy or think about it more before buying anything new.
This was so helpful! Thank you! Also - your logo is sooo cute! Love it and you look fabulous! I always feel encouraged in motherhood and homemaking when I watch your videos. 💛
I love that you say simple living is not easy living. I'm on the road to living more simply but I'm not there yet. I used to think it would be easy but I am finding it is not. I think I need to shift my mindset on that a little so I can move closer to simple living.
Erica - I am really pleased to have discovered your channel - thank you so much. I'm on a similar "minimalish" journey. I'm now going back through your videos from the last year as I've really enjoyed those I've watched so far. Best wishes to you and your family. Denise, a UK mum.
I think a lot of the "rules" are not one size fits all. For example, I've heard people say to do at least one load of laundry per day. That might be OK for a family of four, but if you live alone, that's 2-4 extra loads of laundry per week! Also, during the last few years, supply chain issues have made it a little harder to know what you can replace in 20 minutes. I've found I shoot down too many rules, though, and I know I need to somehow adapt them to what works for me.
The thing with the two minute rule is if people did it all the time they wouldn't have to clean big messes. When I was working two jobs I trained myself to keep my kitchen counters clean at all times because I only had one day off and I didn't want to spend it decluttering my kitchen. It takes less than two minutes to put the cereal box in the cabinet and the bowl in the dishwasher. While you are cooking put every ingredient away as you use it. Two minutes to wipe out your fridge before you go to the grocery means a lot longer before your fridge needs a deep clean which is what I hate to do.
Such good rules to follow which are very effective when used as a starting point in learning how to declutter. I like the way you used examples from your own life and experience to help explain where and how these rules are relevant. Btw. Erica I love these simple sit down with coffee videos and also I just have to say your hair looks amazing at the moment.
Hi Erica! Questioner, here!! I lean toward upholder but I am a BORN questioner. Lol. Thanks for sharing this book, I've almost finished it and am totally fascinated! Thanks for all you do, my friend!! 💕✨️

Erica, the word “obliger” is pronounced with a soft g (as in George).
And a long i. The author is creating a word from oblige.
I listened to the author say the word in one of her videos to figure out how to say it. Thanks for the help!
To live with less is possible cause it shows us that we don't need to have more but those things we need to let it go.

Your explanation of the 2 minute rule is not how I have heard it explained before. It wasn’t taught on other sites as an interruption to other tasks. Rather an example is you go in kitchen with an empty glass instead of putting it in sink , wash it or put it in dishwasher. If you take off your coat/sweater, don’t drop it over a chair but hang it up where it belongs. That you don’t delay a task that takes less than 1-2 min to do as it just adds to your work later. Your example would be best handled by Cas’s handy bag (can’t remember her exact name for it) but she has a bag she uses as she cleans for objects that go somewhere else. That way she isn’t sidetracked but rather puts those things where they go as she works thru her house. The 2 minute rule isn’t saying stop what you’re doing to get sidetracked by other tasks. I’ve never heard anyone teach it that way.
