How to hold the pick is such a basic skill, but most teachers barely mention it, even though for adult beginners it is really a challenge. I think we see too many possibilities. Great lesson, thanks.
If you actually look at the way you are picking, you may notice that not only are you doing as you said, but you are also angling the pick while you are picking. Which in turn will create a glancing motion on the string.
Agreed - it’s an angle down PLUS a bit of a twist toward the bridge of the guitar that is actually happening here to keep the pick contact area to a minimum. 👍🏻👍🏻
I think you are one of the best guitar players teaching the pentatonic scale and everything you're doing is what I've been looking on this here for a long long time thank you so much
Eddie, you are one of the best instructors I have ever seen/heard. You take nothing for granted in ones knowledge and motivate me to practice practice practice with nothing missing in what and how I should proceed. Thank you so much and Guitar Mastery Method will retain me as a life long learner! Rock on Brother!
thanks! i took this to the scales where i (in my 2.5/3 weeks practice) was finally trained with my left hand but my picking was alot of the times on the wrong string.. and had most problems on the picking side..🎉
great video, man. straight to the point. you saved the jokes and ads to the end. that is precious. thanks a lot. I'm a left-handed who plays right-handed. a few years away from the guitar made my picking technique real lousy. thanks again
Great lesson as always and addresses yet another of my issues. Having a scale to follow is very helpful. Hope you can do a lesson on the disobedient , slow left hand pinky sometime, as this is one of my biggest issues slowing me down along with inaccurate picking.
Thanx for the lesson Eddie! I started working on picking tek - can't believe how hard it is on the picking finger. I'll check back in a few months to report on progress.
@@dimitrisaivaliotis5616 Hiya Dimitris. I still do an exercise regimen every day and yes - improvement - I can pick @ 16th notes much better than before but still not at a pace that's anything to brag about. Will get back to ya down the road. For now? I can cleanly pick 16th notes @ 90 bpm.
You failed to mention that aside from tilting the pick down you rotate it off horizontal from the strings to cut down friction. But as mentioned by some, "simple fix" is relative to if you can do the three note per string stretch comfortably. But a nice lesson all the same. Stay Well Groovy One.
Thanks Eddie! Having a tough time getting use to using my 2nd finger instead of ring finger going from the 7th to 9th fret. I guess it's important, or you wouldn't be teaching it like that. Gonna take some practice, and some getting use to. :-) Thanks again for the pointers!
FINALLY someone does a decent picking lesson! Everyone else just says "play this pattern" which does NOT cause a speed increase. I reached a peak of speed but STILL cant play faster no matter how many times I play the pattern. Now I am going to try that pick angle and see if it causes an increase! Alternate up and down picking did help, but ONLY to a certain degree. I can play my major and blues scales just fine without even thinking. In fact, I will watch tv sometimes while doing to purposely try to distract myself. To me if you have to think about it, it slows down. I want my hand and brain to do it my mechanical training, NOT thinking. I close my eyes also because to me looking slows a person down also. So, am I correct with my assumptions?
I also came up with an idea just now, the construction of a wedge on one side of the pick to force the proper angle without worrying about how I am holding it. Man if you play any faster you had better worry about your fingers leaving your hands, and on fire!!!
Great lesson Eddie! Just taking the tips you gave, I can see a difference in the accuracy and speed of my picking. I think my biggest weakness is endurance when picking fast for extended runs. This is a great workout to develop endurance. I just move up one fret and play it again and repeat. Shameless plug! I recommend people sign up for Guitar Mastery Method! I'm a VIP member and love it! Eddie is a great instructor!
i remember someone showing me a similar scale, but i can never get my pinky to cooperate with me. so i approach most scales differently, i use my 3rd finger in place of my pinky. the only downside is, i have to stretch a little more but not too much.
Great Vid, thanks a lot! But I noticed something: at 10:00 - where you played as fast as possible - you did not move your wrist (like before). Instead you moved your whole forearm. Was that unintentional? Or ist "THAT" just the way, one could pick fast? Greetz, K-Os
Hey Eddie, it's great to be called "kid" by a...well, from my point of view "kid"...🤣🤣🤣...please keep going, as everyone on GMM you're a real cool teacher! Horns up...🤘🤘🤘
Not sure why he does it but I also use 1-2-3 because then I am using my second finger for the middle note on the first four strings. If you use 1-3-4, then you use a different finger for the middle note on the first string. But you should do whatever is comfortable for you. There are a lot of great players who use different finger combinations. I hope this helps.
This is awesome. I've been working on the 3 nps lessons of late. So this is exactly what I needed. I just wish that I would've seen this sooner. Anyways, perfect lesson by my favorite teacher. Thank you sir Eddie.😉
Great lesson, thanks! And this is why I am signed up with Guitar Mastery Method. They have all kinds of great lessons and taught in an easy to follow method.
Helpful lesson! Thanks. Your link mot the quiz stops working after you pick electric guitar. It sticks on a spinning circle. I am on Safari browser... FYI.
Great lesson Eddie!! Just wondering, how long did it take you to play this exercise that fast; not the end part where you did it as fast as you could, but in general?
I noticed you start out with your pic perpendicular with the string but then when you start to attack you twist your hand and you're not perpendicular anymore like you start out
You are correct. His thumb overhangs a bit and when he applies pressure it naturally adds another angle..... not mentioned but seems necessary to reduce friction.
@@TrickyGomez I do the same exact thing when I pick. And I've also noticed guys that turn it the opposite direction. But if you're going to be putting out videos instructing people how to pick which I don't believe you should it should come natural to you at least do what you're saying
@@soloist2008 I pick that way too, but for some reason when I play certain licks I have to rotate the pick so that it's angled in the opposite direction as his or my fingers sort of cramp up and I miss the strings or pick too aggressively. I don't know why. I guess my bone structure is different or something.
Thank you for the lesson. Maybe it’s because I’ve only been playing 6 months and I’m getting on in years but I’m finding the level of concentration to complete a run is quite something, even at a snails pace 110 bpm. I’ll stick with it though 😊

First thing I noticed too.
Me too... isn’t it funny how a lot of teachers say something but do something different so true in golf too
@@brianbaker5640 Just got my clubs redone and hope my golfing ends up better than my guitar picking, LOL!
