I remember watching this game live back in 2018 .. Not a dull moment in the second half .. no time wasting .. no passive defensive tactics .. 49 minutes of joy and excitement .. Amazing performance by Japan .. But the winning goal was a masterpiece .. a lesson in counter attack and team play .. Some people blame Japan for being overconfident and letting their guard down .. I'd rather give credit to Belgium for the third goal .. I don't think it's easy to score a goal like this if it was another team .. That was fantastic ..
yeah i agree with all of this, and it wasnt japan being too overconfident, it was belgium managing to find the weakspots quickly and exploit them with fellaini and lukaku
I thought the winning goal was atrocious defending from Japan, they were all over the place and opened up all sorts of holes for Belgium. Especially the guy who was right on Meunier, but leaves him to close down on de Bruyne. They were running on fumes not just physically but mentally, but in all fairness the Belgians were too strong.
@@Wyzzkyd I agree .. Poor defending and Honda shouldn't have played the corner kick like this in the first place .. However .. I've seen so many opportunities for counter attacks being horribly wasted .. Either by selfish players or by low stamina .. Actually I think Lukaku realized that its not his lucky day ( he wasted many opportunities that night ) so he decided to leave the ball for Cahdli instead of trying his luck .. some other strikers wouldn't leave a loose ball like this for a teammate ..

Belgium had world class players and experience. Japan had discipline and patience. A game of true sorts. Two opponents respected each other. Belgium won the match as expected. Japan won our hearts!! Games like these what makes Football so exciting
Japanese had fire in their hearts. The way they ran whether while defending or attack is beyond incredible. They put their hearts out in the game. Also, only if they had center back with tall physique and strength, Belgium would have lost this game easily.
This defeat hurts a lot, they played so well yet at the end everything collapsed. It is always a pleasure to see Japan's matches, even if they lose but this one was frustrating
@PRO GAMER How does that Affect? Belgium may be Rank 1 but due to Defensive collapse at the final 15 Minutes they won. Ain't saying Belgium is Lucky, In fact taking advantage of Rival Mistakes is crucial. Both showed a great game and 1 thing is for sure. Both of them would defeat Brasil next round. Just kidding in that last sentence.
Especially because Lukaku's first diagonal run opened up all the space for Meunier on the right wing. Then, once Meunier has it, Lukaku shows back to the ball opening up the space at the back post for Chadli, and to top it all off, he even dummies the ball through for him.
Rather ironic considering the way they played in the last 15 mins of their final group game against Poland lol. But they did indeed contribute to one of the best games in the 2018 world cup
aaaand I'm back here three years after the game. I cried so much after the game, but definitely the most memorable WC game of my life. Congrats to Belgium, but equally great job to Japan.
One thing that is extremely underrated about this game is how Japan never backpedaled, never stepped back, never was afraid of an immensely superior Belgium team. A lot of teams would have just parked the bus in front of their goal after stumbling into a 2-0 lead, but they kept attacking, giving their fans a show. Really admirable.
After watching this for maybe the 10th time, Honda's knuckle free kcik was a thing of beauty that no one talks about. Perhaps could've been higher but great read and save by Courtois.
It was the biggest overcome of the 2018 World Cup.The winning goal was scored in the final minutes. The winning goal play started with the goalkeeper.Lukaku made a brilliant move and left the ball for another player to score.

Lukaku's movement on the last goal was amazing. His first diagonal run opened up all the space for Meunier on the right wing. Then, once Meunier has it, Lukaku shows back to the ball opening up the space at the back post for Chadli, and to top it all off, he even dummies the ball through for him. My words won't be able to express how fond I am of Lukaku. He missed 2-3 of his signature plays throughout the game, which, if had gotten in, would have been decisive. But in the very end, when the ball was passed to him, and he would have bee able to score, he selflessly let it pass to his colleague. What a player.
I watch this from time to time. I believe that this match is one of the best and most fair matches ever that were played during a World Cup. It should have been the Finals. Belgium roared when our Red Devils scored that final goal but our hearts bled for the Japanese players, who equally deserved to win. We are fully aware of that fact. After the 0-2 most of thought it was over. Only the maturity and teamwork of the Red Devils assured our victory. Not many teams could come back from a 0-2 but they managed to do just that. Greatest of respect to the Japanese players also. They grabbed us by the throat at the start of the match. They fought like honorable warriors and never relented in their attacks. They kept their game up to the very last. Together, both our teams played one of the most beautiful and fair matches that were ever played during a World Cup. Too bad there had to be a winner.

last i checked belgium should've just given up, they had no right to win that nor score that 3rd goal. it shouldve just been the underdogs. Belgium shouldve just walked out like cowards and pull a dpr Korea
I'm from holland and live 5 minutes from the border with belgium so I wanted to see them win but japan gained so much of my respect this match. I have never felt so bad for a team I wanted to see lose from the start. Also much love to the Japanese supporters your country's discipline has always amazed me.
can anyone just walk thru the border or is there some security?
@@Samir-rd8xp normally you can travel freely to any country (in the european union) you want no checkpoints. But now the whole covid situation there are some restrictions, like in belgium you can only travel to city's near the border if you live in a city that borders it in the netherlands.
I’m Japanese
In Japan, last scene of this game is called
''14 seconds in Rostov''
Hello, I am Belgian. This match was incredible. Even if I was happy at the moment and during the tournament I felt sorry then after for Japan because your team played very well. Since then more and more football players from Japan do play in the Belgian league.
That was the Peak of Belgium Golden Generation. Which is now alive anymore.
2012-2020 Belgium was something.
I was rooting for Belgium, but it still made me feel sad for the Japanese. I was working at that time so I missed all the live action.
Ok can u tell me who u want to win? U r confusing me first u say u want bel win then u say I feel sad for japan lose r u dumb fam?
@@shironradiation2612 nope he is a true football fan. That's exactly how I felt. Feeling sympathy for others is not a sign of dumbness
I’ve watched a shorter version of this match highlights for a couple of times and today watching this extended version brought me more excitement. I’ll never get tired of praising the commentator, on his fabulous poem-like rendering of the game. When Hazard was shooting, the way he called out his name was like a father to his beloved son or a teacher to his best student!
Brilliant game. Heartbreak for Japan - one of the most memorable world cup games in my lifetime
you dont have likes and i decided to help you (I am from Russia)
Best comeback in World Cup History
No, the best comeback in the world cup was in the final of Switzerland, 1954. Germany defeat Hungary 3-2 , after 0-2.
@@gyorkax Close! But the best come back was by Portugal in 1966 when they came back from 0-3 down and beat North Korea, who had shocked Italy, 5-3.
@@gyorkax thats the same result as in this match

When Japan plays a game, it’s like watching an anime. Long story and breath taking.
Definitely one of the best match I've ever watch, really no dull moment. Both team played well. The players, the referees & the gameplay of course.
1:34 nice touch
Respect to the Japanese team...for showing amazing football...but this match shows again never ever give up. ❤️
Best counter attack in football🔥
Never forget that Lukaku produced the greatest counter attack of all time without touching the ball.
And today Japan shocked everyone again by beating Germany 2-1
holy balls insane knuckle ball from the Japan second goal, reminds me of great old juninho days
THE BEST MATCH OF WORLD CUP 2018 EVER FOR ME.. :')
That last counter attack I was awesome. Respect for both teams. They both gave it their all.
Japan everytime mesmorise me.Incredible nation and unpredictable football team...
Best come back in the history!!!
That turning and crossing from Hazard 💥
A match of the all matches of all times. Long live FIFA.

Idk why.when a underdog team wins,I felt so happy like winning world cup.after 2 goals from Japan,I was literally supporting for them bcoz I wanted a different result but last goal was so epic from Belgium.still Japan played their 100 percent in this match.they will rise again in next world cup
The most heartbreaking game of this World Cup
How didn’t they win this World Cup what a squad they had
もう2年も前か 2-0の時は勝ったと思ったんだけどなぁ
フェライニに出てきた時点で高さが詰んだ
最後のカウンターの実況は忘れられない
解説の絶望、日本人の絶望( ノД`)…
No hablo taka taka
植田出しとけば良かったのにね
1st time i have watched the full highlights since the actual game...really was so heartbroken by this
Best match forever in world cup

As a die-hard Belgian Supporter, I had nothing but respect to Japan. Seeing their lineup for that World Cup, I had such high hopes for them, and I cheered them on. Sadly, they went up against my Belgium. And sadly, that seemed like the end of an era for Japan, with Keisuke and Shinji getting old.
