Almost twice the price of the top of the range MG ZS ev, but with possibly better build quality and looks, and a rust warranty that covers the whole car, unlike its cheaper competitor.
DS + EV should’ve been a really exciting match. I was initially put off when their website said they designed to have the same conform level as patrol and diesel. When DS gives their designers full reign with what an EV-only platform offers, Johnny McLeod Smith will have a great time!
It does look good. If you don't regularly make very long trips the range is fine. I find the trend toward huge batteries to be wasteful. Big batteries are expensive and heavy. They are of little use for most people's daily use and cost extra energy to lug around town. This appears to be a fine car for an urban lifestyle, much nicer to look at than a Kia.
The problem is that people will end up keeping an ICE car for their occasional longer journeys. That's much more of a problem than driving around with battery capacity that you will only need every few weeks. We are moving away from an EV as a second car just for city and shopping. They need to (and they can) do everything.
Good honest review, sounds like its style over substance for the DS. Did they design the charge port cover any better than the e208? Nice coat by the way
Just here to say I'm sick of "luxury SUV's" electric or not. I never have been that interested but now they're so prolific I just don't even want to look at another one to be honest. I'm out.
You never had to buy them in the first place lmao. Some say Heath Ledger was the best Joker. Some say it's Joaquin Phoenix. But deep down we all know that you're the real clown for being offended by other people's car buying decisions.
@@carlosandleon 😂 Very clever Carlos. I bet you've been itching to use that analogy haven't you. My original comment is what is known as an "opinion" and, despite you inferring otherwise, It is not directed at "other peoples buying decisions" but rather the general design of a range of inanimate objects. 🤔 Hardly cause for a snide personal attack you would think. 🤷♂️ But then, such incidents tend to say more about the character of the instigator than their target. 😉👍
@@STUCASHX that's quite a paragraph you got there. I don't even remember what I wrote but I am positively entertained. Edit: Oh it was this comment lmao
Love the Kevin McC impression at the end. Half way in and I was like - “nah”. This feels like a car for old people... moderately wealthy, ill-informed, with bad taste.
It's just for people who care about ideas, ambition and flair. The design of the interior puts all the Germans to shame... Maybe Volvo are capturing a Swedish essence better that ds are capturing a French essence ... but not by much. Rear foot room and 200 mile range won't worry the target audience. This is for Paris, London, Frankfurt, Milan... It's to get two people around town in comfort and style... for that it couldn't be more perfect.
Owen Rodgers I 100% agree with you - If you love the styling and don’t mind about the range/efficiency for that price, then it’s for you. So... it’s not for me 🙂
Actually, I was thinking this could make a really nice / comfortable 'second car' - it hasn't got the range, but for popping into town *in comfort* (well, driver comfort, less so for passengers in the rear) this looks pretty good. Downside is mainly the price, as Johnny said - it's significantly more expensive than other second/town car offerings with similar range.
Johny has such a great presenting style, great video! Really don't get DS though, why not just make the Citroen brand stronger then you wouldn't need 2 brands
I think they're trying to copy the VAG model. DS = luxury (kinda Audi?), Peugeot = Sporty (SEAT), I think they'll position Opel/Vauxhall as a more staid middle ground like VW, Citroen for a bit more quirk and now they have FCA, FIAT will become the Skoda. Who knows if it will work though... historically all those brands have occupied similar space and are all much of a muchness. Will be interesting to see if they can separate them out into some kind of distinct pecking order like VAG have achieved. This car is absolutely gopping though. And far too expensive.
I just love the honesty in this one, it's a nice car but too expensive for that class of vehicle. The only reason to buy one of these is because you like the brand. When are we going to see Kevin McCloud testing the latest Tesla models...that would really be a Crossover! lol Great video as ever, keep up the good work!
The French have a different way of looking at luxury, than - say - the Germans. For them it's quirky styling with bits and bobs all over the place, unusual textures and materials. Yet there are manually adjusted seats, no powered tailgate, not even a hydraulic bonnet. Why would you cut corners like that in a luxury brand?
I’ve always loved the DS3. This is very cool, quite quirky and definitely stands out from the boredom on the roads. Bit pricey yes but hopefully that will the beginning of the new range! Great video and love your honest and appealing presenting style
It was designed to remind people in the back that they are riding in a DS instead of letting them look outside. Small windows with obstructed view = luxury!
This car has a really high "I want it" factor! Loved everything about this car. So who knows, maybe my Leaf is going to be replaced with this instead of the Kona.
I love the way Johnny dressed up to do the French DS report. He is as always spot on. Driving a luxury car in levis tee shirt and trainers while very football is not what potential buyers want to see. If they are football then this car is too cheap for them and has far more refinement and taste that they would recognise anyway. Unless they are buying one for their gran. A perfect spot on report as always. Good work.
Great review. You (Fully Charged) need to slate some EVs to maintain your independent integrity. And you have. I do love a big Citroën but I've never bought one new. 3 years old and 30% of list is the way forward.
The "problem" is that compared to 10 years ago, there really are some great EVs coming out now! And I dare say that more and more EVs coming out are just flat out better cars than their petrol rivals and siblings. Hard not to be very excited about this transition!
@@patreekotime4578 10 years ago this channel couldn't really afford to criticise any EV because there was like one release a year if they were lucky, you don't criticise the very thing you are suppose to be promoting. Over the next few years there are hundreds of electric vehicles due to be release, not all will be but will, they can afford to criticise those they don't like and not harm the EV market.
You need to be patient with Citroens, the first 3 years they deprecate 50%, the next 15 years they will go down the next 40% and then they’ll start climbing to 2-5 times their original cost. Happened to DS, CX, 2CV, SM, Ami .. will happen to my 25yold XM, next to C6 and of course some day to the ETense.., or .. ? I love electric cars but it is very unwise to buy one privately in the next 3 years. Ask iPhone2 buyers.
An excellent, balanced review as usual. My over-riding opinion of the car which I can’t get past, is that this just doesn’t look like a luxury brand. And if someone is in the market to spend money on a luxury brand, that’s probably a prerogative for them. Most people, I’m guessing, who spend money on luxury brands want to be seen spending money on luxury brands.
That touch screen responsiveness, I agree, is more important than a lot of auto manufacturers understand (ICE or EV). If it is slow to respond - especially in a top luxury car - it will be perceived as cheap quality. It needs to respond IMMEDIATELY to your touch, especially if you are accessing the screen while you're driving.
Pricey, unusual styling but I like it - it's just different and typically French. And what more could you want - smooth Citroen ride in silence. Love it.
Thank you for yet another objective, informative and honest review. And I must admit I agree. I absolutely love the DS3 E-tense, I think it's the most beautiful EV out there - but it's priced too high, and have too limited range. I hope the boom of EVs in 2020 will 'force' DS to adjust their prices - or the range - but untill then I'm already beginning to look forward to a DS4 E-tense or a fully electric DS7.
freakaefari I think Tesla has ‘weird-looking and impractical’ sewn up at the moment and they are not selling on luxury. This is a sheer branding exercise. The sort of thing you do when your markets saturated or or shrinking. In a growing market it will just be ignored.
The car ... whatever, but Jonny has such a nice coat! :P But seriously: another such an amazing profesional but at the same time chill review. You guys are perfect!
Acceleration or sharpness isn't what Citroën is about. It's about comfort. Actually, even more than comfort it's about ease of driving. It's little details like a "dark" button on the center console that turns off all lights except the speedometer. Very nice while driving in the dark. It's about things you're doing semi-automatically while driving in other cars that get taken care of, or pushed to the background. It's about being able to drive for 10 hours without getting tired. You really need to drive one to understand it. And sure, even then it's possible this brand isn't for you, that's fine. We're all different and that gives the world color.
So much love for this channel! With regards to the car... Bit of a mixed bag. How can you suggest the brands main objective is a quality, luxurious item, when it has manual seats, a manual tailgate and the same looking plastics as seen from the French brands for years. £40k! Get out of here. Every Citroen I've ever traveled in has been comfortable, so you don't need to spend that sort of money. Perhaps the lower spec'd models are the sweet-spot in the range. I like the design, but that's about it.
i like how the representative of DS tries to explain, how matrix lights works. A couple years old technology is something extraordinary for luxury brand of Citroen with pretty expensive price tag.
Anytime I hear about the DS brand being “luxury”, all I think about is the 6 people at my work who all drive identical Citroen DS3 cars and I just can’t see how it’s supposed to give you that luxury image??
Ask them if you could take one for a test drive. The thing with Citroën is you need to experience it, and if possible for a longer drive, especially including highway driving. Sure, there's a decent chance it's still not for you, and that'd be fair. We're not all thesame. It's not just comfort even though that's utterly sweet, but also how everything works in the car. All the things you're normally doing while driving, which you don't consciously notice, you'll find they all just kinda are pushed to the background. It's not fast. It's not snappy. But you can drive it for 10 hours straight without getting tired.
Love the "Carry On up the Tailpipe" music (ooo matron)! Similar to Jonny, I agree you could buy a Tesla Model 3 SR+ for the same money and I know what I would have, despite the undoubted French flair. Form over substance then. The old DS5 was proper gorgeous inside (shame it's discontinued) with aircraft style chunky switches overhead. I think the Peugeot e208 is nicer inside and out than this DS and the 208 seems to enjoy better tech too? Anyway, it's great that more EVs are turning up and in this case - it's a pretty thing to look at.
I have done 12,000 miles now since March in my DS3 and in Eco mode and cruise set to 70mph I get 120 miles before desperately searching for a charger that works in the last 5 miles or range. At 60mph I can get 160 miles, and thats in summer. In the rain at night and in winter the range will drop to 130 miles at 70mph. Not even 2 hours driving before I need to stop for an hour to charge due to the lack of 100kw chargers. I am on motability so am giving mine back and going back to a diesel 2008 until the PSA group step up to the mark.
I see your point. But for people like me who have original DS3 14' e-hdi this car is great. I know that range is not so great etc, but man how it's looks! It's a big LOOOKER car. Inside is beautiful, as quality I hope. For me it's great car to go aroud town, park for free and have nice, silent place to stay in traffic jam in Cracow. My diesel have big range but I need it only when I go on vacations trips aroud Europe and only reason for that I bought diesel 4 years ago. Now it's not my must-have, I preffer to have silent and comfortable car with great desing. PS. nice shoes ;)
The Model 3 might just be the best choice at any price point. Superior charging speeds, sporty, very fast/quick, extremely efficient, one of the longest range EVs of any car maker, very aerodynamic, comes with other Tesla bells and whistles. I'm with you on that..

Nice coat by the way
Yes, great coat!
Yes, I really like his coat. 😁
A superb review - really enjoyed it.
@@carlosandleon
😂 Very clever Carlos. I bet you've been itching to use that analogy haven't you. After all, it sounded so cool when you read it. 😉
However, as a rebuttal of the premise of your pithy retort, I have never owned an SUV nor am I in any way "offended" as you are suggesting.
Jonny is the most trusted vehicle reviewer I watch, thank you.
Great review. It's really good to have a freedom of speach as you have, instead of the many reviews. Keep up the good work!
The rear view is amazing, the side 3/4 and front is horrific. Love the channel, thanks for the content.
Grand Designs! Very astute! Love it!
Great review - good music.
That pretty much sums up most French cars since the 90’s.
I’m formerly a French car enthusiast.
Bingo! (But at least it's an EV)
This was my thought too.
I just love the honesty in this one, it's a nice car but too expensive for that class of vehicle. The only reason to buy one of these is because you like the brand.
When are we going to see Kevin McCloud testing the latest Tesla models...that would really be a Crossover! lol
Great video as ever, keep up the good work!
I like the tone of your channel. Subscribed!
I’ve always loved the DS3. This is very cool, quite quirky and definitely stands out from the boredom on the roads. Bit pricey yes but hopefully that will the beginning of the new range! Great video and love your honest and appealing presenting style
What's with the B-pillar body. It looks like it was stung by a bee!
It was designed to remind people in the back that they are riding in a DS instead of letting them look outside. Small windows with obstructed view = luxury!
@@slava_trushkin Hahaha... This car got uglier as the video proceed..
And, if you drive any of the new Peugeots, the A-pillar is HUGE. It just gets in the way
Another brilliant and honest review . . Bet Peugeot are happy!!
Love these Videos as always guys......and yes FIRST. ugly car but excellent presentation. There's nothing chic about driving in Paris. Its awful.
Driving in Paris is a nightmare, i always use the underground !
Thank you Jonny McCloud for a fantastic tour of the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense. :)
This car has a really high "I want it" factor! Loved everything about this car. So who knows, maybe my Leaf is going to be replaced with this instead of the Kona.
Johnny's segments are always the best.
Another excellent review from JS. 👍
Trying to be the most premium French brand and yet it looks like an $8,000 Chinese car
thing is Chinese car might look better as they tend to go with clean lines as they are trying yo copy the German's styling.
I want an Electric Citroen 2CV !!!!
Varo Librium Go and build one. That would be what a EV should be
Episode on that coming soon
...or a Renault 4
Enough electric 2cv manufacturers around.
Jonny going all architect chic on us.
Thanks to this review, i buy this car today
I love the way Johnny dressed up to do the French DS report.
He is as always spot on. Driving a luxury car in levis tee shirt and trainers while very football is not what potential buyers want to see. If they are football then this car is too cheap for them and has far more refinement and taste that they would recognise anyway. Unless they are buying one for their gran.
A perfect spot on report as always. Good work.
Gave this video a like just for the coat
It needs to respond IMMEDIATELY to your touch, especially if you are accessing the screen while you're driving.
i really like that you are not afraid to be critical. most car review people are so fake. thank you :)
Thanks for the honest review.
I’m sorry. I forgot that “luxury” was synonymous for “weird-looking and impractical”
freakaefari I think Tesla has ‘weird-looking and impractical’ sewn up at the moment and they are not selling on luxury. This is a sheer branding exercise. The sort of thing you do when your markets saturated or or shrinking. In a growing market it will just be ignored.
I'd say the focus on quietness and ride comfort definitely qualify as 'luxury' - the 'weird-looking and impractical' fall under 'french style' :p
sheer branding exercise = Tesla..... FYI, All current Teslas are far more conventional than any french car....
except for the CyberDuck.....
This is why your french waiters will spit in food....
The car ... whatever, but Jonny has such a nice coat! :P But seriously: another such an amazing profesional but at the same time chill review. You guys are perfect!
Wonderful video. Terribly designed car. It’s just all over the place.
Great review, Kevin.
People say the Cybertruck is ugly but this interior offends me far more. It’s faux luxury.
Another great review
From the front it looks amazing and the interior is a breath of fresh air!!! Finally a good car.
'Thanks for watching Grand Designs.' - I love that. Thanks Jonny.
Nice one Jonny.
Excellent review 👍
Found my way here after entering Auto Traders monthly competition to win one of these.
Great review of an automotive curiosity!
i like how the representative of DS tries to explain, how matrix lights works. A couple years old technology is something extraordinary for luxury brand of Citroen with pretty expensive price tag.
I miss Johnny! 😢
nice review by Steve Jobs
Great review!
Honesty is the best policy !!
What a nice and weird car - and what grande episode!
The interior looks like something hairdressers will love...
I really don't understand your comment, what's the point with hairdressers??
I'm yet to find an electric car at this price point that I would choose over a Tesla Model 3. This certainly is no exception.
The Model 3 might just be the best choice at any price point. Superior charging speeds, sporty, very fast/quick, extremely efficient, one of the longest range EVs of any car maker, very aerodynamic, comes with other Tesla bells and whistles. I'm with you on that..
Forgot to add what a fine review.
