Why have I not heard of this guy before this week? An absolutely amazing composer.

Thanks for your comment. Flagello, like so many forgotten American composers, needs more exposure.

Vigorous and economical, without an ounce of flab.

There was a reasonably good recording (in stereo) of this work with the composer conducting the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma on Serenus SRS 12002 released in 1964.

That radio station I grew up on once had a 'Serenus record hour!' Lots of interesting music was on that label. Thanks for reminding me.

    Sounds like a sight-reading.

+MooPotPie - Years ago Karl Krueger recorded rare American composers' works and issued them on his Music in America LP's obtained through subscription. His tight budget required limited time with an orchestra, so he would go to London and hire the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for an hour. This orchestra was so well-disciplined that it could literally with almost (if not absolute) flawless results play a work through by sight, one reading (no mean feat considering some of these works were unpublished and the many instrumental parts hand-copied from the manuscripts (Parker's Northern Ballad being one example)). Thus we have a large number of works set to record through sight reading. Would it be possible for all orchestras to be able to do so well! But your mentioning this brought it to my mind: it has been done. As for this recording, I have no idea. Thanks very much for your comment.

***** Well . . . I meant it as an observation, not necessarily a criticism. A sight-reading, especially a competent one of a harmonically difficult work, is better that no recording at all.

Bristow Symphonies, Horatio Parker Symphonic Poems like Vathek....I grew up on a radio station that had the whole set, and I would dub them off the air with my Dad's Ampex real to real, Now there would be a great reissue project, to get all those MIA Music In America records out there for download at least. Thanks again
