Cosplaying as a bike mechanic: Handlebar swap

- Inspired by a Rivendell Atlantis I saw in Tokyo, I swapped my handlebars to the Nitto Bluelug Jam Bars. Swapping bars is the best way to feel like a new bike day. Stopped of at 33 Apt for some delicious coffee too.
Love how much joy you get from things as simple as handlebar swaps. Makes you realize how bikes are build for joy and any modifications we do will bring even more joy
It's the little things.
Changing the bars is a great way to refresh the feel of bike.
A number of years ago I swapped the original flat bars on my Surly Krampus for Jones loop bars.
Made the bike much more comfortable and relaxing to ride.
Another great video 👍
Right on!
I love that bike, good sir. It’s my dream bike. Been riding bikes for maybe 55 years. But barely get to touch my bikes anymore for various reasons, being a caretaker of family members. So I live vicariously through your videos 😊
Thank you for watching!
Always like before watching! These videos are sure to brighten my day :) cheers from Boulder, CO
Awesome! Thank you!
another simple yet awesome video, I really do appreciate when you post man!
Thanks!
I love your positive vibes so much
Thanks so much. Dressing the part adds to the fun!
I find it extremely impressive how relaxed you always react when people almost run into you without watching. Cycling in Seoul was a real challenge for us and we mostly ended up on the street.😅
I try. Sometimes I’m not so relaxed haha.
just wanted to leave a comment that a day with a new video of yours always cheers me up! c:
I'm so glad!
Luv your vids my friend, also I got my hands on the movie “Perfect Days”. This was a really delightful little movie, thanks for your recommendation. Enjoy your bicycling! because I can’t live without mine✌️
So good! I'm glad you liked it.
Thanks for sharing! Isnt it great when you simple just change the handle bars and remove the fenders and its like you are riding a new bike! Bicycles are the ultimate fun machine ever! Be safe and take care!
Yes, exactly
@probablyriding forgive me I have adult ADHD and now I realize I just said what you titled your video as a comment. Duh. 😂
@ Not at all. Always appreciate the comments. Thanks!
Always excited when there's a PB drop. Thanks Marcus! The Atlantis looks amazing in sports mode
Thanks!
Best commute bike channel 🎉
Thanks for watching!
WOW. Just love the WTB grips, did not know they still exist! I used to have them on ALL of my bikes back in the day. Must look for them!. Sweet setup BTW, I ride a Danish-made BenBen with Moth bars and just love it; will not swap I think as they are the coolest bars I've ever ridden. With or without bags and stuff.
Right on!
Great video and totally agree that new bars can transform a bike. It's funny how much it changes your body position on the bike and how the whole thing feels.
Also good idea to change the stem when you change bars. I can't recall any company that provides information on the distance between the clamping area and your hand position but it can vary quite a lot and it's a good idea to take that into account and at least eyeball it.
Definitely need the right stem to accommodate the reach of different bars.
I just swapped my flared whiskeydrop bars for the jones h-loop on my bearclaw thunderhawk and it feels like a completely new bike. So fun! It’s like riding a bmx bike, I’m having a blast
Same here! The change feels like magic.
Absolutely agree with you about handlebar swops. Change the bars, change the bike. I guess now that you have Susie for touring, you might as well have an urban bomber. It’s a nice spectrum of different bikes now, all from Rivendell.
Here in the North West coast of England, it would be daft to ride anything without mudguards, although everyone does!😂.
I’m moving soon, and then I might take a few off.
My bike would be set up very differently if I lived in the UK.
I have just done the same as you and swapped out my handlebars on my Surly Bridge Club to Velo Orange Klunkerbars in black and love them. Feels like riding a new bike. I am even thinking of buying the Klunkers in silver and going from one to the other every few weeks😁
Klunker bars are super fun.
Really cool bike and well made video, with good information and useful knowledge. I would like to take a trip down these streets. In Denmark, we have great streets for cycling too, so I'll have to settle for them. Thanks for a great video
Thanks. I loved cycling the streets of Copenhagen. Amazing infrastructure.
Beautiful bars
Wonderful bike check wall.
Thanks 👍
I'm a firm believer that if an upgrade/swap of new parts will make us ride more, then that's all the justification we need. Bars, bar tape, tires, fork, whatever. All for better mental and physical health. We all ride a lot but sometimes we need a little extra motivation! Btw, crazy that you saw that same Atlantis in Tokyo twice!
Definitely worth it. Tokyo is so huge and I saw the same Atlantis in two different neighbourhoods.
If you love hills, you should come ride in Seattle sometime. Almost every journey is guaranteed to be uphill both ways. I'm back on an analogue bike after 2 years of electric and it's quite an adjustment 😅
Would love to!
cool you're so willing to swap the handlebars without crying over cutting those nice old grips ! I would have fretted and fretted and been too sad to see em go
They were due a refresh!
My ride today was quite different. Florida ....in a state park with alligators, no pedestrians. I love your bike and enjoy your videos.
Sounds like a fun ride!
Awesome looking bike. A little tip. I use hand santatizer get for putting on hand grips . They slide on easy and the gel evaporates quickly.
Hairspray is good too
I’ve done that too but also didn’t have any to hand!
Thanks for sharing!
Happy to share!
Fun to watch your activity. Thank you for sharing your experience. Recording videos for various angles and situations is kinda tedious works I know. 😊 The lighter the bike, the happier you are I am sure 😊
Thanks. I’m enjoying the process! I think the graph for lightness and fun plateaus at some point.
I had around 3 handlebars for my commuter bike that progressively got more swept back. Eventually I settled for the Nitto Albatross bars. Very comfortable for city commuting.
Albatross bars are definitely a classic.
I ❤the new look! I tried to buy those but they sold out quickly. You have the only video where I have been able to admire them. They remind me of the mothbars or rons ortho bar but Im sure they are different. I think you need to get some golden pliers and sim works ramble bar. Ive seen those on a riv and they are cool, kinda wide so a shorter stem is needed.
Yeah! I had my eye one these but they were sold out online. Luckily found the last ones in Bluelug Kamiuma.
They'll restock later, Patience is a virtue.
Your videos are the perfect thing to watch while having breakfast and drinking coffee :) Would you recommend going to Korea MAINLY to cycle through Seoul?
Thanks for watching. Seoul city rides are great but it’s definitely worth getting some rides in the countryside too. Check out some of my videos about that. Some amazing scenery.
I have a used single speed bike that came with a bullhorn handlebar. I recently replaced it with a moustache handlebar. It really does feel like a completely different bike.
Enjoy the new ride feel!
Wow, your underground parking area looks just immaculate. Consider yourself lucky with that; most places I've lived in, those tend rather dark and unkempt. BTW, hair spray also seems to work well for mounting handlebars.
I know, I’m pretty lucky.
loving the title 😊
👨🏻🔧
gotta love a good bike check wall
👍🏻
i recently did this with a bike ive had for 14 years. really changed the game
Awesome 🙌
Cool bike 🆒
😎
In Portland, when the first weather report shows no rain for the week, I take the fenders off all of my bikes. I prefer how bikes with fat tires look without the fenders, but totally necessary in the winter here.
Feels and looks better until you get a wet bum.
Great video. I spent yesterday working on installing wooden fenders (among other things) on a project yesterday. Forgot my phone, so no new video for my channel. ;)
Wooden fenders sound cool!
Just put my Homer into "Urban Sport Mode" with Fun 3 Bars (680) and Billies off Rune (48cm) onto my Atlantis to make it into a cushy tourer with mudguards.
It's great to ring the changes...must get some dungarees!
Fun 3 bars are on the list!
I felt that "why" at 5:07. Annoying cars just merging in.
🤷🏻
Your videos are very ASMR. Think I would nod off it it wasn't for all the caffeine! A question - as is often the case cycling in major cities, near misses seem frequent for you...had any 'offs'?
Thanks. Not so far…touch wood. Didn’t realise it looked like I have near misses in my videos.
My Riv Appa has gone through several handlebar iterations: Soma Port Mann, Nitto Albatross, Riv Bullmoose and (current) Nitto Wavie Bar. And it will probably cycle back through these bars in the future.
All part of the fun! This Atlantis has had Nitto Albatross, Nitto Losco, Nitto Billie and now Nitto Jam Bar. Will try drops sometime too.
@@probablyriding Nice! I should probably try it on the Appa as well. But the upcoming experiment is with Ron's Ortho Bar.
Lovin the riv in sport mode
🚲💨
"Why?" 🤣
I ask this same thing on the regular.
The eternal question when a car is in such a rush to overtake, to then just cut in front of you to turn.
I'm super curious to know about your saddle angle, it seems like the nose is way too high from where I'm watching?!
I ride mostly MTB and tend to run the nose just below level (or even lower for lots of steep climbs!)
Thanks again for posting wonderful videos!
Love watching here in chilly BC, Canada ❤
Depends on how upright you are.
@probablyriding Yeah for sure! That makes sense with this style of bike and riding.
Love the vids!! Please keep bringing us along for the ride, always appreciated!
감사합니다
Very nice 😋
Thank you 😋
Such fine dungarees!
I love them.
That's some expensive grip lubricant ;) I use the same perfume, love it.
The Atlantis deserves to be treated sometimes.
Great video ...What are your thoughts on a chrome chain guard? do you get grease on your legs without some sort of cover or do you just roll up your right leg ... in the 80s we always had a chain guard ...
I just roll up my trousers and usually wear darker colours. Chrome chain guard could be good for a city bike.
I'd be interested to know how the Jams compare with the KT bars you also have. They look great but I'm perturbed by any bars with 'upsweep' and how they might feel in terms of wrist comfort.
Both have a bit of upsweep. Hard to tell completely because they are on two different bike. Same width. KT has more back sweep, so a little more chilled. Jam feel more mountain bikey.

Mechanic cosplay 😅😂 you even got the overalls/dungarees on! Edit: lol you even mentioned it haha
Changing bars really does make a huge difference in the feel of a ride. So I totally get what you're saying.
That note and drawing was so cute! And it's kinda cool that you'd actually met before. A shared love for your Atlantis' 💚✌🏼
Thinking of making some ‘Cool Bike Tickets’
I like tinkering and transitioning my Salsa Fargo into sport mode, just as much as I like tinkering and transitioning it into touring mode. :^)
It's always fun to swap things up.
Gorgeous bike. I hope to someday having one as pretty
What are your thoughts on the saddle. Thinking of pulling the trigger on either the mitica or epoca. My riding position is about the same as yours.
This is a Bertoud Aspin. I love how it has aged and would certainly recommend
@probablyriding I will have to look it up. It certainly is a nice looking saddle. Goes well with such a pretty bike.
All of jeremy’s bikes are in sport mode. Lol. He needs to get a touring mode bike 😂
Jeremy does what he wants!
What racks did you have on it? Great video as always!
Both Nitto Rivendell Big Racks.
Shorter stem with those bars? Bike looks great.
Yes. The Billie bars sweep back way more than these.
I'm probably staying up late watching a probably riding video.
😴
Beautiful piece of rideable art . That bike is a masterpiece 😊
Thanks! I think so too.
Where are those coveralls from? They look awesome
Orslow from Japan
Sport Mode looks great! Are there any brand of lock-on grips featuring an acceptable cushion that would save cutting old grips off during bar replacement?
There are but these grips were due a change anyway. Usually I use some alcohol to remove grips.
You should try marketing some probably riding dungarees, they would sell like hot cakes.
That would be fun!
I have a handlebar problem.😂😂😂😂
😎
Much cheaper than a drinking problem. That’s how I rationalize these kinds of purchases anyway. With the benefit of supporting an active lifestyle too.
new bars are not the same as a new bike, but they're pretty darn close!
For sure.
Probably Tinkering
That’s me
new bar day :D
👍🏻
In the new bike getting the Bosco bars and fenders?
New bike will get drop bars!
Is coffee generally cheaper there than in the UK?
About the same.
Changed your mind about the handlebar bag? 😄
Haha. Yes.
What size wheels are your? 26? Thanks.
650b
Hello! What 4 bolt stem did you swap in to accommodate the new bars?
Nitto Power Stem
@@probablyriding Thanks!!
What clamp size of your stem?
25.4mm
Which bike stand are you using?
The cheapest park tool stand.
@ cool. Enjoyed the video.
You don't need to lock your bike outside the coffee shop?
I did.
early to this one
🥇
❤️
Early gang

That motor cyclists at the end 🤦🏻♂️
