Those Victorian engineers were wizards. The train trip looked like great fun despite the poor visibility which provides an excuse for a return trip. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
In about 1962 we stayed at Colwyn Bay. We travelled all over North Wales by rail. Many of those lines now closed sadly. We took the train from Bangor to Llanberis, and then walked up Snowden, taking the train back down. We also hired a rowing boat and rowed across Lyn Padarn to find a four foot gauge slate railway on the far shore. So a very enjoyable day out. In 2014 we took the Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog to Caernarfon, viewing Snowden from the train. Now semi-retired in Picton, South Island, New Zealand.
Too bad about the fog, but as a steam engine enthusiast, a recording of a steam locomotive mechanism makes everything good, haha! Thanks for the movie, I'm looking forward to the next one.
What a wonderful train trip up the mountain to the summit. Too bad it was so foggy, but the fogginess added to the beauty of the landscape. Looking forward to your next adventure!
The bane of every tourist! "You should have been here yesterday/last week/etc!" 😉 Luckily I only had a handful of such times in a 30-year travel career. Plenty of things were missed unfortunately but I can't say that I regret any of those holidays. When you look back it's an odd person who wishes that they'd done less! 😊
Hey guys, if though the weather didn't cooperate, it looked like everyone still enjoyed themselves. It was to be able to see of the Scenery on the way down. The shops looked really nice as well. Thanks for sharing.
Did the Yankee Old Timer Railways round out of Denver after visiting some old friends 14 years ago. Great fun! I get out the James Garner movie "Support Your Local Gunfighter" (and "Support Your Local Sheriff") every once in a while just to watch Jack Elam ride the Durango to Silverton at the end! 😉🤠😊
Me & my 3 boys walked up Snowden & then down again around 1970 - love Wales - it was also very misty, but the paths were obvious - well worn, and coming down we took a different route & discovered a stone (Miner's ?) village that was abandoned - spooky - we emerged at the far end of the lake & had to walk all the way back along the pass to our start point - where my, by then, very worried husband & daughter - who refused to do the climb, were waiting ! Totally exhausting ! I did not attempt that again !
Yes, know what you mean! Backpacked in 1950s, up and down a foggy Snowdon, with my Girl Guide friends led by our intrepid leaders. I am very grateful for the lovely memories that our Guide leaders gave us while giving up their holiday time to take us Youth Hostelling to experience the beautiful English and Welsh countryside.
Seems a great experience 👍 and very watchable 😍 enjoyed the train travel. So sad about the weather, yet you both made a great trip as well as amazing video.. 👏❤
Thank you so much for precise Knowledge about the Snowdon mountain railway with it's history, i really enjoyed it as a second year travel and tourism management student this video helped me alot to know about the history and locomotive that Snowdon uses thanks !❤
Sorry you missed the final view due to low flying clouds. Wild beauty and occasional sheep! Did you choose the steam vs. diesel train because of the historic significance? While I'm not an actual train geek, I can't help being amazed when I think of how much toil and sacrifice went into connecting so much of the world by rail. It made such a difference to 'regular people', making travel more affordable, and saving days of dangerous miles on roads.
Another excellent video thank you. Re the weather I hope I can make you feel better by referring to my trip up Mount Washington Cog Railway in New England. Brilliant sunny and very warm weather down in the station area. However we climbed several thousand feet up to the summit area and while there we had a full blown blizzard. I kid you not you just stayed inside the building until our train was ready, single carriage again, and then rushed out and into the carriage as quickly as possible . When back down the mountain beautiful sunny weather again. Never experienced such a change and I'm used to Pembrokeshire changeable weather.
I've summited Snowdon a number of times, but I've never had the pleasure of using the train. Now that I am much older, I'm pretty sure if I ever visit Snowdon again, it will definitely be by train.
Hello seekers how are u I think u are good .😜😛 So I watching ur video just lol.... but thank u not for this video but for this wonderful history to serve us . And I like to invite an India . Please come to the India and explore some hidden but historiography places. I like to welcome u. Thank you
The Welsh have NOT changed the name of Yr Wyddfa! Only the English have ever called it Snowden. Similarly the Brecon Beacons is the English name for Bannau Brycheiniog. Only when England invaded and conquered Cymru were its native language and place names replaced by English! Children at school were punished for speaking their native tongue until at least the late 19th century
The fog is actually low cloud in our video. It really is not possible to tell what it will be like on any given day, as you have to book so far in advance. All I can say is that more often it is shrouded in cloud.
Hi Simon and Will, so you let the train take the strain, we've walked up Snowdon a few times over the years and when we reach the summit we often have to laugh at train passengers who have their photos taken at the trig point fist pumping as though they've walked up 🤦🤣🤣 Shame you didn't get the views but that's Snowdon for you.
😂😂 I can imagine, would like to hike it one day, I am sure its amazing experience. Hope for better weather next time. We were unlucky but yes that is Snowdon and Wales!
Yes you can do that on the diesel service only. For some reason they don’t sell single tickets on the steam service. Also you can do it by riding up and walk down not the other way around. They don’t sell single tickets down.
That’s a little lie. In the late 70s I fell out the door age 6. My dad pulled the emergency thing and got me all safe and well. We happily continued our journey. No harm done. The reason I’m here watching this is because I’m planning to go up the mountain by rail again very soon. 😊
Ll makes a should in Welsh as if you are holding spital in your mouth and then you throw your tongue forward in the month to make the sound so it is not Lan it is Llan
Prices for a return ticket in 2024 are £55. I'm sure to some people, this seems good value, but £110 for a couple to travel up a mountain and back down again is, no pun intended, a bit steep!
Some places need to be kept for man alone I have been up Snowden twice once walking and once on the train, not everyone likes dogs I say thank you to Snowden railway for keeping the railway for man alone

Yes indeed will have to try again! 😑
That was great!!!!!! Beautiful. Looking forward to next week. Hugs and blessings.
Thank you Joen ☺
Lovely, and a near twin to my experience going up Snæfell on the Isle of Man. Still an experience to remember!
Ah, Snæfell another great mountain railway. We did that a few years back and the weather was much better!
In about 1962 we stayed at Colwyn Bay. We travelled all over North Wales by rail. Many of those lines now closed sadly. The whole route as well as the weather was astonishing. I absolutely love foggy, cold and humid weather. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Too bad about the fog, but as a steam engine enthusiast, a recording of a steam locomotive mechanism makes everything good, haha!
Thanks for the movie, I'm looking forward to the next one.

Always a pleasure guys!
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS TRAIN RIDING, FOGGY & BEAUTIFUL SCENERY. THANKS FOR SHARING. MARVELOUS VIDEO! 👀🤗👍🏻🍷🍷⭐🦈😃
All those beautiful colours on the mountains!!😊😊😊
The bane of every tourist! "You should have been here yesterday/last week/etc!" 😉
Luckily I only had a handful of such times in a 30-year travel career. Plenty of things were missed unfortunately but I can't say that I regret any of those holidays. When you look back it's an odd person who wishes that they'd done less! 😊
The very next day was sunny, but then if we had switched something else would have been in the rain and cloud, so its swings and roundabouts.
Crazy story about that train crash! Yikes! Too bad about the weather but thanks for another great video.👍
Hey guys, if though the weather didn't cooperate, it looked like everyone still enjoyed themselves. It was to be able to see of the Scenery on the way down. The shops looked really nice as well. Thanks for sharing.
Przepiękny krajobraz a przejażdżka pociągiem - cudo.
Hello Simon / Will you have to love these small locomotives what a wonderful trip that would be , thank you .
Yes they are quite special loco’s 😊
What an amazing trip. And the research that you do to tell the history really brings the trip alive. Thank you as always. =-)
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Awesome i love to visit UK but it's impossible for us... thank you bring the beauty for us
Very enjoyable video. Greetings from Australia.
Thank you very much!
Great video. Loved the history that you narrated, too. Thank you 😊
Many thanks!
Reminds me of going up Pikes Peak, Colorado on the cog railway in the 70's. 4302 metres.
That is some height! I didn't know of this line, looks incredible!
Did the Yankee Old Timer Railways round out of Denver after visiting some old friends 14 years ago. Great fun! Sounds like a very rewarding walk even if you don't fancy it again. Just a stunning part of Wales.
Love your videos. Amazing scenery and you narrate very well. Thank y'all for sharing the wonderful history and landscapes/structures
Thank you very much!
Seems a great experience 👍 and very watchable 😍 enjoyed the train travel. So sad about the weather, yet you both made a great trip as well as amazing video.. 👏❤
Hello now are you both very interested vidio of the Snowdonia train up there best wishes take care stay safe xx ❤😅😅

Amazing video!

Glad you enjoyed it and learnt something. Good luck with your studies!
Beatiful video and music 😍Thanks you 🌹👏👏👏
A very good tip for a day trip. What a pity that the weather didn't play along.
Tommy from N.Germany
What a cool adventure! Wish the day would have been clear for you. Thank you & keep traveling 😊
I wish it had, the scenery when clear is out of this world!
Fabulous views even if cloudy. I was not really surprised to find that there are 2 geocaches at the Snowdon summit.
cool 👍👍👍
Brilliant 👏👏👏
Wow 😮 que hermoso video. Gracias. Saludos 👍🌎💖
Beautiful 😊
Fabulous memories of my parents taking us ( misty when we were there also) 🏴♥️
Glad we stirred the memories.

Oh it had to be steam, the diesel is just not the same!
Another excellent video thank you. Re the weather I hope I can make you feel better by referring to my trip up Mount Washington Cog Railway in New England. It is amazing how the weather can change so much with height!, it was so cold, but sounds like you were colder!!
This Is Cool, Love The Music You Pick At The End ❤❤
Shame it was cloudy but still a great day out. ☺
Nice landscape, nice video!
Beautiful vidéo, thanks
Hello simon hello Will❤❤👍🥰💐
Hello!
I've summited Snowdon a number of times, but I've never had the pleasure of using the train. Now that I am much older, I'm pretty sure if I ever visit Snowdon again, it will definitely be by train.
Yes certainly give it a try a great trip. I would like to try the reverse next time and walk up! Just hoping for better weather!
At 16:22 we catch our first glimpse of what we came to see: the sheep!
❤️
Fantastic Video Guys
Thank you very much, just been watching your Painswick video very nice! 👍👌
Hello seekers how are u I think u are good .😜😛 So I watching ur video just lol.... but thank u not for this video but for this wonderful history to serve us . And I like to invite an India . Please come to the India and explore some hidden but historiography places. I like to welcome u. Thank you
We would like to travel to India one day for sure!
Llanberis was joined to Caernarfon by a branch line.
How long does the entire trip up and down take? Thanks,
55 mins up, a 25 min break at the top and then you must come down on the same train. Another 55 mins. So about 2 hour 30 total.
The Welsh apparently don’t call it Snowden anymore. They have also changed the name of the Brecon Beacons.
Yes we have mentioned that in other videos in the series.
I'm considering to head to 1st train 9AM. Is it foggy at the top in the mornings? Would be wiser to take an afternoon train to the top? Thank you.
The fog is actually low cloud in our video. It really is not possible to tell what it will be like on any given day, as you have to book so far in advance. All I can say is that more often it is shrouded in cloud.
Best time is summer i think??
Hi Simon and Will, so you let the train take the strain, we've walked up Snowdon a few times over the years and when we reach the summit we often have to laugh at train passengers who have their photos taken at the trig point fist pumping as though they've walked up 🤦🤣🤣
Shame you didn't get the views but that's Snowdon for you.
😂😂 I can imagine, would like to hike it one day, I am sure its amazing experience. Hope for better weather next time. We were unlucky but yes that is Snowdon and Wales!
Do you know if there are civilians living there?
What if you want to ride up but walk back down??? Is that allowed??
Yes you can do that on the diesel service only. For some reason they don’t sell single tickets on the steam service. Also you can do it by riding up and walk down not the other way around. They don’t sell single tickets down.
That’s a little lie. In the late 70s I fell out the door age 6. My dad pulled the emergency thing and got me all safe and well. We happily continued our journey. No harm done. The reason I’m here watching this is because I’m planning to go up the mountain by rail again very soon. 😊
Are dogs allowed on the train ride?
I am afraid not.
Ll makes a should in Welsh as if you are holding spital in your mouth and then you throw your tongue forward in the month to make the sound so it is not Lan it is Llan
Train times?
Can be found here snowdonrailway.co.uk/ they run every 30 minutes from 9am
there are many other mountains. snowdon too busy.. Try Cadair Idris.
Yes there are but this is the only one you can go up by steam train.
Prices for a return ticket in 2024 are £55. I'm sure to some people, this seems good value, but £110 for a couple to travel up a mountain and back down again is, no pun intended, a bit steep!
Pricing of so many attractions are getting out of hand.
It was best not to of gone to the top incase you got lost in the mist and you would not of seen anything in all that mist
Maate the rack is not a third rail. It's a rack!
It's time the Snowdon steam train was consigned to a museum and the line electrified with a modern tram light railway.
What shame they turn down hundreds of thousands of £s in lost revenue each year simply by refusing to carry dogs . ???
Some places need to be kept for man alone I have been up Snowden twice once walking and once on the train, not everyone likes dogs I say thank you to Snowden railway for keeping the railway for man alone
Just where is the tilting engine? I havnt seen it in over thirty years now
