500cc 1991 Assen Final Lap

- This is the final lap the 1991 500cc Dutch Grand Prix held at Assen. In a two-part race, Schwantz held a narrow gap over Rainey on aggregate, but with Rainey holding a small gap on track it was actually very close! It was a real pressure contest between the two, with an unlikely victor.
Commentary from the wonderful Keith Huewen and Julian Ryder.
Thanks to DennisF1 for transferring this one to DVD
I love the camera angles that show the terrain better than modern days, all helicopters and towers which make it all look flat - this gives a sense of the geography
The two of them really provided us with such awesome moments during that year.We had Assen, Donington and Hockenheim, all of which were nail-biting finishes. Tremendous!!!
Le Mans too
There is no boxing match worth watching without 2 great competitors. Rainey and Schwantz brought it.. and we all benefitted.
Suzuka
What Kevin could do with the Suzuki is astonishing…My all time favourite.
Greatest era of MotoGP. May the Schwantz be with you.
Rare and not needed mistake by Rainey. Two greats of the sport
Fantastic racing Schwartz was completely fearless and Rainey knew it
god i miss this version of assen! what an amazing track!
The BEST ever
Yes. Removing the North Loop ruined it.
2 strokes are the way to go
They produce luxury noise
Fantastic video. The great days of real GP racing.. 👍🇮🇪🍀
that goes to show in racing NEVER GIVE UP amazing racing
Man Schwantz was unreal.
The very best years of our lives
Definitely the best era of racing, 500 2 strokes,
absolutely real racing from real men riding real bikes !! awesome and happy days when watching the 500cc grand prix on TV was compulsive viewing !!
I remember Rainey's quote after this race like it was yesterday, he said "you can't give em away any better than that"😢😢😢
He got owned if Kevin wasn't on his ass he wouldn't have fkd up like that.
@@EmperorNerox Kevin was no way near in attacking zone, I would call that on his ass.
Real MotoGP two stroke were the days.
Yawn...its much more exciting and faster now...typical moan
They were the most unpredictable, had the most raw power, and took the most talent to ride. And if it was wet or raining forget about it.
That would be suicide.
@@pummyy NOT!!!
LAME AS SHIT THESE DAYS
@@frankburdodrums8984both times have its pros and cons...but today has 2 things: there are more good pilots (only 5 in 1991)...and bikes are way faster (7"), and lean much more.
Of course, we dont have Wayne(x2), Eddie, Kevin or Mick....but we have 93#
@@pabloperez4063 What a JOKE.
You were doing so well until you compared #93 to the greats.
He's washed up. So many better than him for years.
I watched those 2 race at Road Atlanta in 87.They raced each other for a lot of years.Great racers!
Enjoyed the way they competed against each other superbikes and gp. It sometime looked as if they didn't like each other.
Remember the Fabulous Thunderbirds playing in infield?
@@waynegacyii9010J.Vaughan,s band?
Massive Revvin Kevin fan here but, that was troll level > 9000 from the #34 lol
Rainey had just pinned what was perhaps the perfect lap, maybe the best lap ever ridden on a 500 on the real Assen, and just one tenth of a second late on the anchors.
Just shows how pinned #34 was tho, aced the brakes, avoided a collision when Rainey got back onto the track after mowing the grass on the exit, and snatched it away.
So, bring back 500s!
If you time it from 3 corners to the finish of the penultimate lap to the same place in the last lap Wayne's lap would have been a 2:01,9 - half a second faster than Schwantz's lap record that wasn't beaten until the circuit was modified. Just to get an idea of how hard they were riding that final lap!
But, of course, first you have to finish such a lap to get the record. God, how I miss those times and the Schwantz-Rainey battles!
you are quite right....a pity Wayne had this mistake....it would have been SUCH an amazing record...
When moto GP was at its best..500s rule💚
Days of Thunder Pantera!
@VeteranCape Yamaha Honda Suzuki Gagiva 500s👌
WGP : Schwantz, Rainey, Doohan
F1: Senna, Prost, Schumacher
Group B, Group C
greatest era of motorsport
2 grands pilotes !
I had a pulse, went to tears and a smile like a child. it's great! and this is a wonderful Gixer!
It's not a gsxr
Gsxr's are across the frame 4 strokes .
These are 4 square 2 strokes .
"suzuki" written on them is about the only thing they've got in common.
Turn on captions and go to 1:48
aaah brilliant dude. How the hell did you spot that?
I hope the ladies got the jizz too!
What are ye on about here lads?

Assen never disappoints.
Never
An age old racing saying: "they count the winners at the end"....
This is the original Grand Prix sound!
tinnitus in the left ear too?
one of epic finish of all time
I find these old motogp racing fascinating than the current crop of motogp. I guess I'm curious how in the world they rode those beasts with no rider's aid.
Bohica Pure guts 'n skill....not to take anything away from today's guys...
I sometimes think ABOUT it.
.and I am sure the top 5 of todays would be ABLE TO manage the 500 poroficiently...but It mere especulation
Semplicemente fantastico !!!
I really mis them screaming two strokes
What amazing colours and sponsor ... both bikes!!
Colours yeah, sponsor.... Eh
Beautiful riding at a beautiful circuit - magnificant
Schwantz was living rent free in Wayne’s head on that last lap
Fantastic video thanks
What a race...
What a day that was.
34!
@jimcarrey14
Correction. Old Assen was a great circuit.
Im sure it’s not just nostalgia - the racing WAS better back then. These beast bikes looked so lairy to ride and while today’s riders are no doubt just as skilful there isn’t the same feeling that they are riding at the absolute limit of control and it could all go tits up at any moment. Two strokes were awesome.
...I remember watching this race live...the phrase 'anything can happen' was coined on that day...
I was at that race 🤩😃👍🏻
I at Jarama , 2 weeks before
2 of the absolute all time greats.
Coming in 1st was all either one ever cared about but regardless the were both Champions of Moto GP
Always wanted to see what its like to ride one of those 5cc 2 strokes. They look like monsters.
I had a Yamaha RD350 two stroke. It was as fast as a modern 600cc four stroke and a blast at the racetrack.
They raced like their lives depended on it. Real racing,
Also today, in the 3 classes, all of them are lunátic
This old Assen was such a beast track... I always loved the "arena" part from Haatbocht to Strubben... And it's not even original :D
Love the strokers
kewin y wayne , dos grandes
THE BEST MACHINE
Never surrender!
Schwantz was legend
The golden age of motogp, nice to hear the screaming two stroke engines again.
EPIC BATTLE IN THE FINAL CORNER ASSEN
Ukawa Vs Checa - Assen 2002
Edwards Vs Hayden - Assen 2006
Rossi Vs Marquez - Assen 2015
Anyting else?
Sito Pons vs Sarron 250 CC 1988
And even though there was no Battle un ThE chicsne, WE must aLWAYS have un mind ThE amazing MOTO GP 2018 race....My God!
one word AWESOME
kevin forced him to push it over the limit...amazing race
klesar.hr thats racing at that level. Damn that is part of what makes it is what it is. This one is used for education worldwide. Amazing bit of racing from two greats.
I come back often to see this true golden era of bike racing. For me 90 to 2001 was the ultimate - then 2002 to 2012 saw the greatest ever rider at the top. Todays racing just doesn’t do it for me with the rider aids and wings bullshit. I’d love to see Pecco lap a 500 screamer around Phillip Island or Donnington though
Are these 2 cycle engines?
DOS MUY BUENOS PILOTOS , GRANDES
Looks lot of fun
Those bikes were brutal machines. I still ride my RG500
Best driver ever
2:52 ooh those jackets. What a lap that was
Que bonito era assen. Público a tope.
@EJ25RUN exactly....they killed it.!! RIP old Assen.!!
Assen still rules
U can almost smell them. Glorious 2 strokes
Pure balls riding then. No fly by wire like today.
Can't get enough og that... Still
Went to this race on my trusty steed RG500 CH (1989) Pepsi-Suzuki "Kevin
Schwantz" GP Race Replica. Fabulous Bike. Got huge crowds whenever parked up as banned in Europe (Emissions I ask you 600 miles per litre of Castrol 'R' - Vegetable Oil !!!!! - I envied those behind me as the smell was to die for !
Regards Ron & Kevin (Grahame W UK)
Burned off perhaps ¾ of a litre there and back, so I suppose I am to blame for 'Global Warming' and not the millions of Diesel Lorries, Trains, Ships etc.
Note only 6,276 RG500's built and of those hugely improved CH Model, mine was no 873 - then they threw away the mould, as banned everywhere US/Canada/Japan and World Wide market sales collapsed. I Blame interference from idiotic 'Politicians' who know absolutely F' All. Get real we are in the middle of an Ice Age, 12,000 years ago where I live was under a mile thick Ice sheet - what would you sooner have ?
12,000 years time probably only under ¾ of a mile Ice Sheet, so I told you, but did you listen !!!!
You alone are responsible for global warming!😂
Around that time, Senator John Danforth was keen in destroying Superbikes in the US.
ks34 avoid the touch but still open the gass ,, epic !
Man he choked at the end
Amazing pilots......
Indeed
Nobody better yhan Kevin at applying the pressure to force someone into a mistake - And ESPECIALLY Rainey - uncharacteristic for someone with so much experience- that one probably stung for a while
jus shows to go---never give up
Amazing.
Suzuki kevin schwants vs Yamaha wayne rainey 👍
The winer is Suzuki 👍👍
A esperança é a última que morre
It is really a lucky strike at all , however he plays his very best till last corner so he deserves to win the game .
👍👍👍👏👏👏💪💪💪
Kevin Scwhantz 😎👍
Schwantz 34 the legend puts his hand up before he crosses the finish line., Humiliating Rainey ahahaha
Che spettacolo!!!
Damn. i forgot that one. Kevin put a bit of pressure back on mr Cool
Wow!
Schwantz could have won several titles had he been on a Honda or Yamaha.
Why did he never change to Honda or Yamaha? Or why did they never ask him. I was always curious about that.. 🍀👍
Riding on eggs with a simple rocket , it was the job of the best pilot of the planet before 2000.
Nothing was made to help them. Big danger during 45 mn , impossible to make a mistake.
It was the 500 2 strockes , everyone knew these bikes were impossible to ride for anyone.
Let's reduce the power of motogp bikes (come back to 600 or 700 cc) and let's stop electronics controls for race.
It is mecanic sport , not electronic sport, the man trying to use the machine.
With these bikes, they could explose you , even power and any controls you have on your modern bike.
They are on another planet, they are professional pilots.
I don't mean Rossi or Marquez are bad, they just don't have same bike.
The 130 kg , 190 hp was the limit for the human , it is like so (these bikes have a little less power) .
270 hp without electronics control is simply impossible to ride fast for an human.
You seem to be calling for Moto2
@@pabloperez4063 ... Perhaps.
But moto2 have regulatory limits and electronic controls too.
I say , moto2 and motogp is mecanic sport. You fix 4 strockes, mini weight, cubic capacity, no electronics controls, number of cylinder, no compressor, fuel capacity.
Factory will have to make the best engine, the best chassis and the more useable bike.
The idea is , you don't help the pilot. If motorcycle becomes too dangerous , you reduce a parameter.
@@abinadvd i must AGREE...but for one reason or another, factories dont seem to want to accept these limits, and push further in order to achieve ThE fastest bike whatsoever.
It must be difficult to make a perfect "regulation"...THIS IS what Dorna tries...un general, I think ThE Championship has better health than , lets say, 25 years AGO...though I miss ThE old times TOO....
When you've just remembered you made a million dollar bet that you would come second!
This mistake was brought to you courtesy of what happened in Germany.
I love Shwantzs if he would’ve rode for Honda or Yamaha he would be a household name !!!!
probably had scwantz in the back of his mind at the end to thinking about how he might be right behind him doing something desperate to win and lost focus or something he did that corner in the other laps
Veri good job duk
GODS ❤❤❤ what a battle ❤❤❤
In an age when "former" champions were flushed. We keep pulling the chain and he just won't go.
