Croagh Patrick - The Holy Mountain of St Patrick

In this weeks video we explore the stunning, and culturally significent, mountain of Croagh Patrick.
Croagh Patrick / Cruach Phádraig, meaning (St) Patrick's Stack, known locally as "The Reek" is a pyramid shaped mountain of 764m/2,507ft, and an important pilgrimage site in Co. Mayo.
The focus of a prehistoric ritual landscape, it has long been considered a holy mountain, and later became associated with St Patrick, who is said to have spent 40 days fasting at the summit.
On the last Sunday in July, "Reek Sunday", thousands of pilgrims climb Croagh Patrick in honour of St Patrick, some climbing barefoot as an act of penance, traditionally involving prayer rituals.
There has been a stone chapel at the summit since the 5th century and there is reference to a "Teampall Phádraig" (Patrick's Temple) from AD 824, when the Archbishops of Armagh and Tuam disagreed as to who had jurisdiction on the site.
The modern chapel was built in 1905.
Croagh Patrick is unarguably visually striking and dominates the landscape.
This was our 3rd mountain that day and you can almost see the moment that the legs start to turn to jelly!
