  • Part 1 of a lesson series on fast runs within the minor pentatonic scale.
This lesson focuses on alternate picking descending 12s through all 5 positions.
I'm focusing as much as possible on a one finger per fret technique.
I'm running a pretty clean rig to focus on good technique. I used my Fender American Special Strat, equipped with Texas Specials into a Fender Deluxe amplifier. I used a tiny amount of drive from an MXR pedal. I also used a subtle amount of chorus.
I hope you enjoy the lesson! Hit that like button for more like this.
    Cheers!
    Sam

My biggest challenge is consistently keeping both hands and wrists, especially my picking hand super relaxed, Great vid Sam!

Is there anything wrong with barreing your first finger to keep the first position notes held down. That way I don’t have to move my first finger every other note?

Great Lesson Sam! I'm a noobie and these videos make me practice my speed. I also use the looper or I'll video myself as a practice tool. Looking forward to the next one.

A question about the guitar.... What kind of bridge is put in the guitar??? It seems a mix of traditional Fender bridge and a Floyd Rose tremolo....

Try switching up the fingering on position 3. Use a stretch for the G string with ring and 1st, and the same fingering for the low D,A,E strings. That makes the difference for liking that position, plus you have the extended box shape 2 right there at the end, in the fingering you would normally play it with.
    Great video.

Awesome lesson man! love your style and technique!
My only thing is I wish you would talk more about your right hand technique.
I'm 32 been playing since I was 11, and personally my problem has always been my right hand!

Somehow he just seems to pick all the notes! There is no trickery here, just accuracy, speed, dexterity and most importantly... coordination

Nice lesson. For position 3, I think its easier just to stretch your pinky to the 11th freight on the B string, since I hate position shifts during runs.

Hi Sam, great lesson man! I noticed that as you move up the strings (going from the high E to the low one) your picking hand sort of shifts positions..you kinda start near the neck and slowly move towards the bridge. Is that something you do intentionally? Thank you

I often catch myself doing that but it's not something I do on purpose .. Just how it happens in a way.. Im not sure if thats a good thing or.. Your picking is super clean so I wondered if that helps you in any way

"Let's talk about the fingering that I like to do in these positions " rofl 😂 first you need to bend the g string out the way , say a whole tone ?
